Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green coming to Nintendo Switch February 27 for $19.99

People are mad about a $20 Pokémon game but think nothing of spending that on one skin in a live service Sony/Capcom/Ubi slop. It's a full game tied to the biggest IP on the planet and costs less than a single mtx from the garbage others keep serving that everyone happily pays for.

This is exactly why Sony is pivoting the way they are. it's because you idiots keep spending money on garbage instead of actual games.

Gamers: "why is the only way I can play these via Rons and emulation."
A lot of those same gamers: "HOW DARE THEY CHARGE FOR THIS YOU CAN JUST OLAY IT FREE ON YOUR PHONE."
GBA games were sold at $7 to $8 on the Wii U Virtual Console around 12 years ago (heck, Kuru Kuru Kururin was sold at $5 10 years ago). That was back when the GBA was a 13 year old handheld, now it's a 25 year old handheld.
Love that some of the same people complaining about the price are the ones that have been complaining loudly for years that Nintendo doesn't sell ROMs and only lets you play older games with a subscription.
See above. And this isn't even a Nintendo Classics title released as a individual purchase, it's a GBA rom packaged, sold, and marketed as a Nintendo Switch game, the rationale behind the ridiculous price.

$8 from 2012 has the same buying power as about $13 in 2026 money. I agree that the price is insane for what they're offering, but I've had the mantra for about a year now that "$20 is the new $5", and that's held true here as well. If you compare this to something besides fiat currency it gets even worse. The "digital Virtual Console game to candy bar" index puts these at well over $20 each in value.

It's just terrible value as most other companies don't really hide behind inflation to hike prices on these classic releases. The fact that $8 from 2012 equals to $13 today in 2026 and Nintendo/TPC still saw a chance to go up to $20 is literally insane. The worst thing? These don't even have the standard emulation features that Nintendo Classics titles do! (and even Pokémon Home support seems to be a no no as well)
For reference, the US PS2 classics release of Siren for PS3 in 2012, the one for PS4 in 2016, and the one for PS5 in 2024 were all priced at $10.

I just find it weird that of all the companies that sell bullshit overpriced skins those are the three you chose to call out.

They're three companies I absolutely loved growing up, which makes it all the more shitty

I don't know why this is that surprising, as I've made so many threads about it. For example I've been criticizing Capcom over the years and talked about this at pretty great lengths

Ubisoft it's mostly just AC for me, which I used to love and for some reason, I keep buying the games, but just end up being so disappointed

Sony I've owned ps1-4

It's just when I think of bullshit overpriced skins those aren't the companies I think of. Personally I think Epic/Fortnite and Activision/COD. I just found it interesting.

Also, if you don't think about Capcom when you think of overpriced mtx you should really check the DLC steam section for a game like wilds

You could write a novel with how long the list of MTX is for that game. The prices are insane.

Believe it or not when I used to play Call of Duty that wasn't even a thing. Haven't touched that franchise in a very long time.

Never played Fortnite
Ah gotcha. It's full of terrible skins now many of which are stupid expensive. I've only played one or two matches of Fortnite as a way of giving it a fair chance but I know skins are basically $20.

I guess I just don't think of skins when I think Capcom.

I use the word skin broadly to talk about any kind of weapon skin, transmogs, etc

Capcom is easily one of the worst out there

It's only going to get worse

It's actually the best value in gaming. You can catch 'em all for $20 and then catch 'em all again for another $20.

Silksong, which probably has more effort put into it than every Pokemon game released in the last ten years combined, is also $20.

This is an IQ test, which I fully anticipate Pokemon fans failing miserably.

Pirating Video Games or Emulating Video Games is also a Reason why Video Game Prices are going Up!!!

Lawyers who protect Nintendo IP's and Rights aren't free and Nintendo has to increase Video Game Prices to compensate these Costs.

This is absolutely something alot of People don't Understand!!!

And buying these Video Games aren't a waste of Money, buying these Video Games enables Nintendo to pay their Employees who are working at the Company for over 40 Year's a fair amount of Money for their Work and don't force Nintendo to close 1st Party Studios because they became Unprofitable, and the most important Thing is this enables Nintendo to create and develop new great Video Games by Employees who don't have to fear every Day to get Fired!!!
Mad Max Thats GIF

Probably?? About a dozen Pokemon games released between Hollow Knight and Silksong.

Seriously, people can do whatever they want with their money. But whoever buys this at this price loses any credibility in any discussion about game pricing and value, forever. And also about NSO being a ripoff.

I believe they call this the 'Goomba Fallacy'. Why are you assuming every person complaining about overpriced ports is simultaneously wasting money on useless skins?

Mental fortitude and debate skills of a Redditor.

I'm a total Pokemon noob, but always wanted to jump in.
Would these two titles be a good place to start?

Short answer no.

My recommendation is to play the actual classic ones or Gold and Silver. Do not let the blindness of people get into you. The introduction of actual abilities without proper balancing, natures and rework EV system will not help you in the run, specially with RB parameters pokemons.

Don't like the price, don't buy it.
Just vote with your wallet.

Personally I think it's expensive, it's just a rom dump from 2 decades ago; furthermore Nintendo very rarely discounts their games. Still I am glad they offered them for purchase rather than via subscription paywalls.

What infuriates me is that they won't add anything to the original game.

No online, no new levels or challenges, nothing... Nintendo is so lazy sometimes. But then again, people will buy it regardless.

I like how he's a self-described 'Pokémon noob', and you think he's going to give a shit about EVs.

It will affect him either way despite how much of not big deal you try to paint for him.
Hardly.

Are you implying that 8-year-olds haven't been beating Pokémon games since 1996? How awful were you that you had to EV train to beat them? EV training only matters to the creepy manchild subsection that play the game competitively.

I think they are testing the water here, one day they will release new versions with at those features…

for $69,99.

Smogonian talk will usually get you nowhere. Its not because a mechanic he does not know or don't care about doesn't mean it won't affect him. Specially when in this generation it made on purpose to affect the player(hence why they introduced natures as well).

Thats why I suggested him playing Red/Blue and Gold/Silver. Anyone can play these games, mechanics hardly affect them if ever.

Thanks for your input, I appreciate it (and everyone else's too 👍)
Lots to "Pika-chew" over. 😁

I like how your response to my anti-competitive tirade is to bring up more competitive trash. Who cares about Smogon except creepy manchildren?

Again, you sound utterly awful at the games if you seriously need to recommend EV training for FR/LG . As I said, 8-year-olds were beating those 20 years ago no problem. They are still for everyone.

I never once mentioned competitive, your brain must be rotten because I used smogonian as an insult and you still didn't get it lol
Anyway, I still believe he should play actual old games(R/B and G/S). The less mechanics, the better is the introduction for people who doesnt know about pokemon. It doesn't less complicated to understand than that.

If you want to recommend a game that won't punish people, I would suggest B/W as the game that introduced reusable TMs. Previous games having one time single use items in a series that encourages switching out Pokemon created a situation where you never bother using them for fear of wasting them.

99% of people who play Pokemon are casuals who don't care about EVs. And 99% of that 99% are able to complete the games without even thinking about EVs. You bringing up EVs makes it obvious you're a competitive player whether you like it or not.

Common sense, retard.

Totally. I would totally recomment Black White since its as well my favorite pokemon game of all time and I believe to the best ones too.
But since the guy said he was total newbie for Pokemon, I prefer suggesting him to start with the classic ones so he can grasp the basics about pokemon. Once he hook up to the franchise, I would 100% reccomend him to play B/W.
