Nintendo issuing refunds for Xenoblade Chronicle X Switch 2 upgrade

Really sad it turned out like this. I was holding on playing X until Switch 2 patch and after seeing how fucked up the upscaler is I held buying it.

If enough peoples refund, that would probably send a signal to Monolith to get their fucking act together.

Asking money for this when the patch is so poor is a bad look. Not even close to the quality of BOTW/TOTK patches.

Something is very wrong with the handheld (in particular) visual quality.

Switch (top) vs Switch 2 (bottom), look how everything becomes wobbly, look at the united states letters

Yeah, not surprised. Not sure this means it's going to be a systematic refund for anyone who requests it though.

Anyway, the problem is apparent to anyone who can employ rational thinking, people denying it are just acting in bad faith. You might be able to tolerate or ignore it, but the issue is there.

Not sure what kind of upscaler they are using, it distorts and smears the image in such an apparent way that it's hard to ignore. It almost feels like it's hallucinating, inferring details that are not there. At least it seems less evident in docked mode, but it's still noticeable. Portable mode is just laughable.

I expect better from a paid upgrade, and even more when it comes from Monolith Soft. I hope this is not the tech they are going to use for their next game. Just use SMAA and call it a day if you can't do any better.

Well, there we go. Each of the 3 platform holders had an embarrassing week lol

Who are you guys switching to after everyone's recent string of failures?

The footage I saw of it looked great initially, but man... the wheels really did fall off on this. I will gladly buy an upgrade if they do a good job, but... they have to do a good job.

Once again, AI upscaling solutions are a poor substitute for actual capable hardware.

The Switch 2 is a more capable piece of hardware than then the WiiU and Switch this more than 10 year old game was originally released on.

This is just yet another a shit port.

It's good refunds are being offered as if you own it digitally, I don't think there is a way to run the original version on Switch without the upgrade applied.

Yea, I added in the OP the reddit video which makes it clear how its hallucinating

This is typical Nintendo stubbornness. They're probably trying their proprietary AI because they would never dare use a tech that could perhaps mean one day won't be compatible with their hardware if they go to AMD or someone else than Nvidia.

I saw this earlier, but I think you should probably wait to make a thread out of it until external sources verify it, since all we have to go on is a single reddit post with no screenshots of their exchange with customer service.

Otherwise, this thread is just about the upscaling/image quality issues, which we already have a thread for:

Xenoblade X S2 Definitive doesn't offer any new content worth the $5 anyway. Just stick with the regular.

But hey at least we have a "HEY WHAT'S POP-IN" joke.

if this is a problem for you, get your refund... I understand some people have abnormally high standards

but this is such a monumentally fucking non-issue for five dollars, I don't even know what else to say 🤷‍♂️

I never would've noticed any of these issues, but also…are these mass refunds or just refunds for the handful that request it?

Do we have any reputable sources for this?

5$ or free, it would have pissed me off that they took so little care for the patch in general.
you can buy some great games for 5$, sure it's not much but when you consider this should be free but they wanna charge 5$ cause it's nintendo and still terrible makes it worse for me anyway.

Why do people assume this is some proprietary AI upscaler Nintendo developed and not "tiny DLSS" on ultra performance to hit 60fps vs the 30fps original?

Is there any concrete evidence to suggest that it is some in-house upscaler?

Those messed up straight lines are reminiscent of ultra performance and too low a res.

How would anyone know? Unless Nintendo ever states anything, who's keeping count?

Read the reddit thread? Screenshots of refunds, peoples saying they got refunded, etc. Reputable as in Nintendo coming out and saying there's refunds for Xenoblade X patch we released because peoples thought it was shit kind of source? No.

if you wanna play some dumb fuck indie garbage off steam instead of a 60fps upgrade to a great game, be my fucking guest

We both know if this was on the quad pro you'd be jacking off to it Bruh

And why would you assume its tiny DLSS when there's not a single case of tiny DLSS doing this?

Tiny DLSS doesn't keep up with fast motion (fast fusion), but slow panning shots or even static would look good, unlike what we see here, with characters' face all getting fucked up at a distance. It's clearly all indicative that it's not tiny DLSS. It doesn't fucking hallucinate details as if there's no temporal data and doesn't know where to fix the image because there's no information in which direction the next frame is going.

i'm not getting any cartridges for five dollars

This game has a lot of problems, dumb story, some pacing issues, and some really shitty quests (it also does a a lot really well)... but nobody cares about the important stuff because of some stupid pixel crawling

I don't want to be off topic, and make this about whether the switch is better than the quad brah... if you are an IQ nerd, you might be bothered by this stuff

But let's be clear, you aren't here because you bought the game, or because you give a shit about anything outside of switch versus PlayStation

Switch version is still ace.
I need to continue it at some point.

even the switch1 version is great

i should shut the fuck up, cause everyone is entitled to their opinion.., but it's like listening to somebody tell you that it's not fun to have your dick sucked.... having your dick sucked is fucking fun lol

After playing for a few hours, no...I haven't noticed any issues.

And by mass refunds, I meant whether refunds were issued for all purchases by Nintendo. Sony has done that before, if I recall correctly. Usually an official statement is made when this occurs.

I'm glad people are getting refunds if they're upset. Sorry these issues bother you so much, man.

Then no, Nintendo is not issuing mass refunds for all purchases. It's not like the $5 patch is pulled from store.

I waited playing X on switch 2, might as well wait for the upscaler fuckup to find its way into Monolith's ears and hopefully they patch it.

There's always PC emulation if it never comes to it.

Non issue? A company charging $5 per customer for an update that should've been free? You think the greedy cunts weren't salivating at the extra hundreds of thousands of dollars if not way more? You are yet again defending the wrong people. Typical Nintendo drone.

Sounds like a good move. I haven't noticed anything, but now I know what to look for. Maybe I'll hold off, too. Lots of games coming out in March, anyway.

I'd imagine they'll try to fix this. Let's hope they do so sooner than later and learn from the mistakes from whatever upscaler tech they're using.

They have other titles to update, too 🙂

Serious question for the techies in the thread.

What happened here?

Was this 1.) AI upscaling? 2.) Nintendo employees or third party did a bad job? 3.) Nintendo just used DLSS without doing a quality check?

Or is it something entirely different?

You are 1 person eating $5 of stuff you paid for. This is a patch that realistically should've been free and the same one patch is bought by hundreds of thousands of people (potentionally). See the difference?

We have a *shit on the patch* topic already.
God how i want a 4k patch for the trilogy, I take this X problems i dont care just give me the patch... I pay 15€ no problem but gimme!

He doesn't understand if this kinda greedy tactics have success they will spread. You paid 500$ for upgraded hardware that should play games better but Nintendo is putting paywall for customers to get the upgrades for many games, and to make it worse a extremely lazy patch.

I am not sure what has happened here but I can assure you that this game doesn't use DLSS in any shape or form

I had forgotten that Ninty applied for a patent for their own AI upscaler. I wonder if this is it?

Reminds me of the Nvidia painterly filter.

Oh, wow. Been out of the loop on this debacle but Nintendo issuing refunds sounds rare.

Very surprised to see that it's related to Monolith Soft of all developers. My impression is that they're one of Nintendo's more tech-savvy teams.

Hah, I've got a funny outsider perspective on this.

I told my wife about how this Switch 2 edition is blowing up online. I started by pointing out how I think it's silly that people are mad about an optional $5 upgrade (I know it's the principal of the thing for the angry people). I compared it to Da Maniac in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia being pissed off about his $15 co-payment (not a lot of money).

Anyway, I had both of us put our faces like a foot from the screen so we could actually SEE what people are upset about. After I showed her, she just kinda paused and was like "why are you reading what other people are complaining about online? Why don't you just play the game?"

I laughed because ultimately she's kinda right. I have been playing and enjoying it for over 16 hours now, even if it doesn't look that great when you stand 12 inches away from the TV.
