Yoko Taro's strength comes from telling his story through video game as medium. TV show and movie are just very different.

I like Yoko Taro as video game director not as movie director.

He was already lowballing us when instead of a game he gave us a Automata Epilogue Radio Drama at a concert.

I didn't realize he was 55. I thought he was younger. If he's 55, it makes sense he would want to downshift, rather than begin a big project like another Nier game. People would have high expectations, and he would have to really dig down deep and push a team of people for years.

Most men his age - or at least by 60 - have lost a lot of their youthful energy and drive. (I say that as someone in that age group myself.) They aren't willing to put in the long hours and sacrifice so much for their work anymore. They want to dial back and do something easier and more pleasant.

I have faith on this. Anno said he wanted Eva to behave just like Gundam. That would make the OG anime and the Rebuild similar to the Universal Century while Yokotaros new anime could be like Gundam Wing or SEED, unrelated to the main universe with new characters but keeping core features of the franchise. Maybe even throwing a big What IF scenario like Hideaki Anno himself did with Gundam GQUUUX last year.

I'm gonna say it, Takahisa Taura should direct the next NieR game while Yokotaro handles the writing. The guy did a great job on both NieRs combat and delivered a solid direction on Astral Chain when Platinum worked for Nintendo.

I hope the next generation is good too, Ikumi Nakamura seems like a worthy successor of Mikami, while Takahisa Taura is a mix of Yokotaro and Kamiya. But we still need more young talent to keep the japanese scene interesting for the next decades...

Both Nier and Nier Automata are self contained stories that don't need a sequel, and im saying this knowing that Automata is a great sequel to Nier (which in itself is a huge feat).

Cautiously optimistic but the animation of Unit 01 at the start doesnt fill me with hope, its that same Netflixy style animation thats every where now, I hate the way smoke looks.

It didn't need it to look like the original series, EoE or RoE, but this isnt exciting to me, it looks like any other (very well made) modern anime but its just boring to me.
