Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Console games are evolving. Marathon has 3 different AA settings!

Game looks... weird overall. I like the design but it melts eyes with HDR.

I have lost count of how many tweets ive seen of this level today. Definitely around 10. I keep saying this but people are graphics whores. It's just who we are as people. Men love pretty women and beautiful looking cars. Hell, women are even more shallow. Everyone wants next gen visuals. Everyone.

You just need to build your own. The ram is the big one but microcenter has been having bundle sales where you can get a 9800x3d, mobo and 32gb of ddr5 ram for around $650. And that cpu is overkill. you can easily save $100 going with a 7800x3d or $200 going with a cheaper CPU.

5070s were going for $500 last christmas. Just get that and play at 1440p. I believe the SSD prices have gone up recently, but i bought 2 TB last year for $120. it will probably be double that right now. 5070 Tis are way too overpriced for the performance profile. I paid the same price for a 5080 just 6 months ago. I knew these GPUs were only going to get more expensive so i just put it on my bestbuy credit card and i now have 2 years to pay it off lol.

For like $1.5k, you can build yourself a pretty good machine. Dont ever buy prebuilt. Just buy the parts and have a local computer repair shop build it for you for like $100-200 dollars.

That pic is in hdr, the neon light pop much more than my run but i heard hdr has raised blacks and that pic look a bit too bright maybe?

Are you people playing in hdr?

I can play everyting at 4k with a 4080, why do you say that?

So far games released after RE2 had great HDR (RE3 is PERFECT).

I still don't have access to RE9...

Re9 is an OLED perfect game if there ever was one. They've struggled with crushed blacks and HDR in the past, but it seems to have been a focal point this time around.

5070 only has 12 gb. and is roughly 40% slower than your 4080.

i play everything in hdr. but i only have windows 10 which doesnt have system level calibration. games still look good so i dont really care.

Don't you have raised blacks?

because in sdr dark areas are perfectly contrasted.

Tomorrow i'm gonna try hdr.

WTF nvidia?
i saw something about the latest drivers a week before re9 came out. the driver was officially pulled from the nvidia app but i guess a lot of people already upgraded to the latest drivers. Apparently nvidia was boasting about using AI to write their code and well, there were go. MS has also had a lot of issues with their latest windows updates after saying 30% of their code is now done with AI.

IBM is the only normal company in all of this. They've been hiring software engineers after realizing that AI is a scam especially since it hallucinates at least 20% of the time. Their stock took a hit last week after Claude added COBOL support but its just dumb idiots buying into the AI hype. you will always need software engineers and QA engineers when it comes to managing these massive and complex systems.

I was fortunate enough to buy a PC before the AI bubble fully hit. Otherwise I'd be fucked.

Don't think AI is necessarily a scam but it is incredibly fucking STUPID to have a LLM write your drivers...

Yep. I captured this image on the Pro and on my LG OLEG TV.

We've finally reached the point where I don't feel I have to make compromises by buying games on the Pro over my PC because I want to play on my couch.

It's because we're so close to that finish line I keep talking about. The one where nearly every game has path tracing with 60fps. Every console just needs to collectively get there together so that the playing field is even.

Then if these companies want to slow down generations after that moment, then sure why not. After that moment it would be small increments anyway.

We just need to get there first. It's so close.

Hey man, im avg mortal(aka poor af, at least by western standard) and still got 9800x3d with 64gigs of ddr5 and brand new 5080(just intime for mogging zombies as leon :P ), u know urself when u are gamer u make all kinds of stupid/insane (but at the same time totally worth it) compromises to enjoy the hobby :D

Making a lot of sense… but I don't think I could ever wait this long to hop into pc gaming and not play at 4k

Dumb question, if I go with the 5070. I can still play at 4K.. just probably at 30fps right? You know me I don't care about the framerate honestly. Just want to max out visuals to the best of my ability

Don't go with the 5070, at least go for the Ti for the extra Vram. 5070 is a fraud, a 5060/Ti in disguise.

I made the mistake of buying the 4070 and now I'm kinda stuck in Requiem with 1440p if I want path tracing, and even so, it has some moments that runs like complete ass.
And I think from now on that's how it's going to be, Vram requirements are gonna go up, I'm sure.

yeah, 4k 30 fps using dlss performance should be fine for path tracing. most other games you can easily run at 4k 60 fps. i gamed on a 3080 (5070 equivalent) for pretty much the entire generation and was easily able to max out everything at 4k dlss quality at 60 fps including games like avatar and cyberpunk. some games like ac shadows, star wars outlaws, and wukong i played at 30 fps 4k dlss quality maxed out then switched to 4k dlss performance and high settings for my 60 fps playthroughs. 5070 is basically 2x as fast as a ps5 and 3x as fast in terms of ray tracing. best card for the price at the moment. 5070 ti shouldnt be $1,100 and the 5080 shouldnt be $1,400. just way too expensive for what they offer.

I'm seeing though as a 5070 can't max require at 4K path tracing. On my 4070, Ac Shadows I could max out at 4K as it doesn't require more than 12 gb Vram.
I could also max out CP 2077 4K path tracing but with frame gen, but I don't know how as I think that one requires more than 16 GB of Vram, maybe Ram swapping.
This one I'm afraid to try 4K PT, lol, I just played a section, it was a slideshow even at 1440p.

I think it's safer with a Ti or 5080, yeah they shouldn't be that expensive, but neither a 12 gb card is worth it even if for less.

Much better answers than ChatGPT, the both of you

Thanks. Excellent food for thought. At the end of the day it will depend on my wallet lmao.

how important is the cpu if i want to max graphics and willing to sacrifice performance? Motherboard? Can I play with no compromises on my 65" c1? Not planning on getting a monitor

Man, fuck this game how good it looks. Can't judge the textures as I'm playing at 1440p, I'm sure they're good. Some geometry is a bit meh, same with most of the faces, especially Grace, looks plasticky, hair looks nice though.

But couldn't care less about faces in cutscenes when in gameplay the environments and lighting look this good.

yeah after i read your post, i realized that a 5070 is probably not future proof.

my vram usage right now sits at 10 GB. So at least in this game 12 gb should be enough at 4k dlss. But others like doom and indy, not so much. path tracing is being implemented by nvidia engineers so they dont really optimize it. im sure once it goes mainstream next gen, other devs will optimize vram usage for it. i highly doubt the ps6 is shipping with anything over 24 gb.

CPU is very important for path tracing games. but only if you are trying to run them at 60+ fps. i wouldnt recommend you cheap out on it. set aside a minimum of $700 for cpu, motherboard and ram. 9700x or above should be fine. stay clear of intel. dont worry too much about mobo. just dont buy a cheap one. $180-200 minimum.

This is why you start your game off with a bang. So many developers (especially western developers) get this wrong and start off with a tutorial or an ugly looking chapter.

Everyone on twitter is talking about this area in the game. No one is talking about how the subsequent area dont look nearly as good. I miss the days of Sony first party where every game opened with an insane looking setpiece with next gen visuals. Nowadays, almost every game starts off with the pacing of a funeral.

Talking about RE Requiem that uses only 10 GB? Sorry to ask, but it's surprising.
Yeah, from this path we're on with the AI and Ram and whatnot, I agree, highly doubt it will come with 30 GB.

So true, that's how I ended with my 4070 instead of a 4080, the 1st one was around 600 euros and the 4080 at more than double that amount seemed a bit much.
Fuck it's becoming a more and more expensive hobby, especially on PC.

It is a mighty gorgeous looking area. You said the interiors look meh, but idk, I like what I see so far, with the shadows and light flickering.

I also like how dark it is, I mean, black is black and I'm not even playing HDR.

yep. starts off around 8GB then maxes out at 10.1 gb after a few minutes. definitely not ideal for a 3080 with its 10 gb vram, but a 5070 should get by.

i just got to the mansion. Looks fantastic. The big bar area especially is just so full of detail. So many different items and objects. Its a shame you cant destroy any of it, but everything from the lighting to material/asset quality is top tier here. the dining room is also beautiful. i have no idea how they manage to fit all that in a 10 gb vram budget with path tracing/ray tracing but its rather impressive.

its still a bit cartoony for my taste, i like me some photorealism but in terms of lighting and asset quality, this is up there with the best of ue5 and easily tops alan wake 2.

That sequence reminds me of Watch Dog 1 reveal, same walking through the rain...
What a game could have been.

With today's PT tech would be incredible.

Playing RE9 on my PS5 Pro with Ray Tracing on and... umm... this is what everyone is hyped up about?? It doesn't look that special. It just looks like a resident evil game to me. It looks just like Village.

Why is everyone obsessed with these graphics? They're honestly nothing to write home about.

You are playing a shitty version. Pc has pathtracing and it's transformative.

Since i have to rollback, what are the most stable drivers version to use for 4080 released in the past months?

I guess i can't use drivers that are too old because they don't have dlss 4.5.

Last edited:
Yeah i saw that one earlier, but since i have to rollback, i was asking if someone knew what is the most stable older version, there is always one, before it was 566.36 or something, but they are too old.

If i have to bother with rollbacking, at least i'm gonna install the best driver around.
If you are not seeing performance issues then don't bother. I believe the main culprit is the latest driver which was pulled back. You may not have it installed.

No apparently after a certain driver version, they all have shit perf with re9 if you use PT.

btw, i checked the post you quoted, there is no 581.47, in the official nvidia page the drivers go from 581.42 to 581.57 :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

My performance are acceptable, i don't have a framecounter but the feeling is that it hover between 40 and 50 for the most part, definitely playable.

But fuck if i can double it...

God of War 3 is probably the best example of that, seeing titans climbing Mount Olympus in 2010 was like

I wanted physical copy on PS5 but it seems volume is low, I will have to wait for ~7 days or something. It seems this is the way publishers will kill physical games...
