Marathon releases to 87,000 players on Steam and 87% Positive Reviews (sponsored by coachmcguirk91)

Slay the spire is also early access. It's not even the final game. A lot of gamers don't even touch early access.
As Balatro and the first one (and now the second) shown, there's a big market for card based videogames. In the same way that outside videogames there's a huge market in poker, in TCG or in board games.

As an example, in Patreon as I remember board games is way more popular than videogames.

Awful numbers so far today. Dayum.

Yes when they're the same unrelated thing you keep posting:

Just create a separate thread tracking its CCU at that point. What does it have to do with Marathon? It's a popular game, particular in asia, we get it. It would be like spamming Silksong ccu images in a Silent Hill f, Cronos or Hell is Us CCU thread. It has nothing to do with Marathons CCU being good or bad.

Did all of those games launch on the same day? No? Then nobody would do that.

Taul Passi is concerned. (Article doesn't really have any new info, read it if you want)

Taul Passi usually has pails on the ready to carry any water for Western AAA.

When he is concerned, that means his usually Olympic level contortionist skills aren't up to snuff for the hill he has to climb.

Well about that...

So you are saying is that Xbox Series X and S are where the millions are playing this? Makes sense considering their Halo legacy connection.

See, Xbros are carrying this to victory!

They're not going to do a single player game. Most likely it'll be Destiny 3.
Yeah, they really should. How many decades have these guys been making nothing but sci-fi multiplayer shooters?

A game with a totally different setting and style would be great for their morale and creativity. If it were up to me, right after the last Destiny 2 expansion they'd already be working on something in the vein of Crimson Desert or The Witcher.

So this means player numbers on the PS5 are much lower than on Steam.
That is really bad for Bungie and Sony.
I always thought that was going to be the case, PC > PS5 in sales when it comes to a GAAS PvP no less, at the top of the list is RE9uiem, which is what everyone in my Friendlist is playing, with some GTAO and BF6 in between

Some of them did actually, but if you want more examples did people spam Hades 2 ccu when it launched same day as Silent Hill f? Your poor excuses don't work really. You know why you're doing it.

I think helldivers 2 was 50/50. At least that's what some people said. I didn't guess which platform would do better, but whichever platform does better for destiny would be my guess

I have three friends out of 500 on Ps that play marathon. Not a good look. Let's see what the weekend brings. The funny thing is that there was a ton of people playing the server slam last weekend or whenever it was.

24h peak of less than 100000 and less than 50000 players right now. This is hilarious considering it was Bungie who advised Naughty Dog to shut down the Last of us multiplayer game even though Shuei said it was great. I guess no one was there to advise Bungie.
Whether or not Bungie's advice was self-serving, they helped save Naughty Dog from becoming another GaaS farm.

They already missed the freebie TLoU2 pack-in stage so would it be F2P or reduced price buy-in? There was already plenty of negativity about the paid bullshit in Uncharted 4 multiplayer and the last thing a majority of Naughty Dog fans want is for them to become another Rare.

Helldivers 2 is top tier PVE, people like to join in with friends and beat some NPC, boss or whatever together + added the fun of friendly fire for the laughs, same with GTAO, most of the people are minding their own business and doing in game work, while just a few go full psycho in any lobby

PVP is a tall order unless you're really into that, even more with crossplay enabled, I wouldn't dare playing against PC players that probably have m/k more expensive than my console, haha

With Jim being gone - and if Marathon proves indeed to be a failure - I wonder if Herman will finally get the boot...

This GaaS initiative clearly hasn't paid off (never mind the 3.6 Billion Bungie acquisition), I don't know about the upcoming Horizon Hunters bullshit but something tells me that it won't be a "hit" and as for Fairgames, they will clearly pull the plug before it even comes out (i.e get canceled).
They paid over 200 full time employees to work on Fairgame$ all week. Why cancel it?

OOF That's rough, Meanwhile Bloody Slay the Spire 2 got almost half a mil for it's early access.

I really hope Bungie can bounce back from this because this industry is becoming cut throat and expensive to bankroll a studio of that size.
Bungie has been gone for more than a decade. How can some people not see past the logo on the shingle? No one who worked on Halo draws a Sony paycheck today.

More importantly I imagine Sony is concerned. They spent a ton of cash buying Bungie, and the budget for Marathon(including marketing) is quite high.

These numbers would be decent for a smaller studio with a modest budget behind it. That certainly isn't the case here.

They should have done a single player campaign with the game. Then they would have gotten their 5 million unit sold to make back the development cost and kept running the pvp as GAAS.
It's sheer incompetence to not have done that.

they don't need to make dirt cheap indie games. But like $350 million for Spiderman, $250 million for Marathon, this is not sustainable.
As long as most of them keep being profitable (very likely the case of these two games) it's sustainable. The thing is that for all publishers, since the 8's a portion of their games get canned or tank in sales, so the profit of the successful games have to compensate the failed ones.

Thanks to the GaaS+PC push PS Studios is more than fine for now. But the thing is, what will happen next gen if as in previous generations AAA budgets almost double?

Sure, to also publish smaller indies or shorter AA/small AAA games adds variety to the catalog and fills roadmap holes between longer and bigger developments, plus are less risky. But they also generate way less revenue, so despite many of them may provide some small profit may not be enough to fund the bigger ones.

It's also worth mentioning that looking at Mobygames, GoW Sons of Sparta took some years to be made has 1,356 workers on its game credits, which is in the 1,100-1,600 ballpart of projects like Gran Turismo 7 (1,310), Demon Souls remake (1,389), Returnal (1,176), Stellar Blade (1,155), Ratchet Rift Apart (1,598), Destruction AllStar (1,255), Horizon CoM (1,353), Sackboy A Big Adventure (1,499), Lego Horizon (1,081), Rise of the Ronin (1,565). Projects that I very likely had higher salaries and longer development times than GoWR Sons of Sparta, but had a not that different manpower size.

Then thre's another group of 1900-2800 ballpart of Ghost of Yotei (1,946), Miles Morales (1,945), Concord (1,972),and GoWR (2,602) or Marathon (2,752) are a bit above this.

Then in the extremes there's Spider-Man 2 (3,575), Death Stranding 2 (3,117) or Horizon Forbidden West (3,365) in another level, almost AAAA territory. Plus in the opposite side of the spectrum there's Astro Bot (514).

I don't even see where the money went. It doesn't have a ton of content, it's a shooter, the production values aren't even that high.
If you play the game you'll see it has a huge amount of content, also including proper narrative/story like in a SP campaign game.

Agreed. Bungie makes good story single player games or PVE like the raids in destiny.

Not sure if they still have the talent they spent years developing this and it doesn't even feel complete. No story no raids no pve nothing .

I get it they wanna chase something new. But this is not it.

4 billion dolars for this piece of trash. Sony should ask refund.
Sony got bamboozled like crazeh on that deal, most of us average mortals here on gaf knew its fucked up and somehow those suits/ceos with 7figures(8 figures maybe?) salaries were so incompetent... :messenger_astonished:

Right next generation it is going to cost $700 million and 10 years to make a game.

Get real dude. All these publishers are going to be cleaning up their operations and trying to fix their shit.

lol ok. Well the game I mentioned (Mass Effect 3) had all that too.

Currently below 60k on steam although it could pick up later today. I was actually pulling for this game even though I'm not really into extraction. I still have a soft spot for bungie even though destiny 2 lost me a long time ago

At 54k ccu atm, and its only 7pm in europe here so we can assume at least 2 maybe 3 more hours of going up for sure, after that european players will start going to bed/offline so it will all come down to the US.

It should pick up. Friday night and the weekend coming. I don't think it'll hit 100k, but maybe gets back to 80k like yesterday. Who knows.

But if it doesnt pick up steam, once Monday rolls around it'll drop fast.
