Marathon - Reviews Thread

Who gives a shit about critic reviews with GAAS games? I trust steam user reviews and Playstation reviews much more. 87% on Steam and 4.65 on Playstation. The only reason critic reviews matter is when they are the only ones playing the game
True, the OP should really include these for context. Much more useful than Meteoritic user reviews that don't require evidence of having owned or played the game.

I'll never ever understand Sony's rationale for purchasing Bungie.

They could've at least tried to purchase Kadokawa/From Software or Capcom or Namco or Koei or Square Enix.

Just anyone but fuckin Bungie.

Well dont forget Destiny 1 got 7.6 and was rated worse than COD Ghosts and BF4.
Meant nothing and was a better game than those imo. And it outdone there initial 10 year plan

Gaming Media mostly had a hard on for anti bungie since they left MS and hailed there next game the Halo killer

This reviewer also doesnt know what he's talking about

Marathon is competently built around a genre it chose not to challenge. It is a game that will reward patient players who bond with its loop and forgive its rougher edges. "But for anyone spending forty dollars and expecting that investment to translate into a full experience, Marathon's storefront is waiting to tell you otherwise"

I havent spent anything on the Store and you can get the full experience playing the game. Like what a retard

I mean, not great so far. But 9 reviews. A little premature for drama me thinks.
I'd agree, but it's more than enough for the doomers, lmao.

Honestly I've never understood reviews for multiplayer games considering there's so many variables. Unless there are hardcore performance/optimization issues it's all personal opinion.

"I only trust reviews I agree with."
Steam reviews shows you how many hours someone put in a game. So if someone put in 2 hours and gave it a negative review because after 2 hours, the game didn't get any more fun, that's a legit review. Someone giving it 0 on metacritic and parroting the same bs line everyone else is, not so legit.

I think we can agree on that, no?

I've never seen a game that makes me want to spend less in the store than Marathon. And I really like the game, but the cosmetics just do not appeal to me.

If you filter Steam reviewers to those who played at least 10 hours to filter trolls who buy, review and refund and those who still didn't play the game enough to have a proper idea, the Steam reviews score is 92% positive.

It's also worth mentinoning that so far Opencritic and Metacritic still only have a few reviews from mostly noname outlets. Still there aren't like over 100 reviews tracked there, which is the usual for AAA games, because Bungie suggested them to play the game for a while and wait for the ranked mode and 4th map (to be released in a week or two?), which I assume will be the first big events/additions to the game.

Anyone whose had one ear to the ground or a finger on the pulse would've talked SIE leadership out of making such a blunder. Irregardless of them having GaaS compentencies and experience.

The actual talent and visionary team, like the one who conserved a dog's head in a some jar, has long since been disbanded from Bungie. Its just a shell occupied by people who don't have much in common with the studio's original rise to fame.

SIE has changed too, btw. Its nothing like the creative and inventively fun company you once used to know in 90's or mid 00's.

Agreed.

It's imperative that they move PlayStation's headquarters back to Japan.

They were (and still are) desperate for a first party live service shooter, and they were worried about MS buying Activision and taking COD away from them (though it could be argued that them buying Activision is one of the things that eventually pushed them towards going multiplatform).

On paper I think getting Bungie was reasonable. I just think they waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overspent on it.

They need to bring back their single-player FPS craft and storytelling.

I just don't think any of that talent is left there, unfortunately.
I think after D3 it should be the next thing to do.
They can certainly do the gameplay and presentation. Just need a good writer for something different
Honestly I know the art and aesthetic of Marathon is divisive. But I'd absolutely love them going in that direction with this IP. A campaign with co-op, and multiplayer with a variety of modes. It'd be so damn good. Honestly, giving Marathon a Halo 3 / Reach template would get me so hyped.

That's pretty much it. Destiny is still a strong IP. But no one should want 2026 Bungie to release D3. I'm sure it's in the works, but if it's going to be another variation on D2, then they're done.

Halo 1-3 and Reach were GOAT tier.

I just don't see the that magic coming back unless there is a gutting of slacktivist types.

If anyone cares about actual user reviews and want to use that to dunk on the game, go to Steam and filter by negative and more than 10 hours. Lot's of actual reviews there.

I just want to go on the record and say that I'm really enjoying this game, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more than I thought I would.

Well hopefully they do more Astrobot and Returnal. Games are plenty fun. Plus plenty people like other genres like HD2, Destiny and Im sure Wolverine will be popular.

They made bucks with D2 being a 7 year old game, and making money in 2024.
D3 will bring in money too. Im sure they didnt think there gonna make billions right away. Good thing they didnt spend 100Billion on Activision and Bethesda

What do you mean review thread? Aren't the outlets going to entertain the idea of postponing the review for a game that is already accepting people's money? Bunch of bastards! Hulst asked with puppy eyes!

How many more 1/5 and 2/5 reviews would you like?
How many 1/5 reviews are there already?
When filtered by those who played over 10 hours, the Steam reviews are 92% positive.

Meaning, once instead of having just around half a dozen of mostly unknown blogs (which is the case right now) they have over 100 or 120 websites covered in Metacritic/Opencritic, the average score should be pretty good with only the usual few attention whore trolls like Stevivor giving 1 or 2 star reviews.

It has everything going against it, but that's what they wanted to do, so they screwed themselves over, lmao

Extraction Shooter, what one time used to be a mode in a video game, it's expanded to it's own genre, making it even more niche, since the majority don't care about it
PvP without Single Player campaign, if you buy it you know what you're getting, the rest won't touch it exactly because of that
Art-style not "suitable" for the average consumer, it looks dull as hell

Oh, I absolutely agree. But, it doesn't make one side automatically right and the other side worthless.

I love it. Like a sci fi Black Mirror, mixed with Mirrors edge, Squid games etc but Bungie style
The music, colours, start up before a match. Its all done very well

You could see why Bungie asked sites to delays reviews as long as possible. It's a meh game wrapped up in big neon sci fi aesthetics. Sizzle but no steak.
