• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

Fatal Frame II Crimson Butterfly Remake has only one 30fps display mode on all platforms, and it's unstable.

Or is it just one of Adam's balls in my throat?

  • Fatal Frame II Remake has a single display mode on all platforms.
  • All platforms have a target frame rate of 30fps. In all cases, we find unstable frame rates.
  • Xbox Series S and Switch 2 show predictable visual cutbacks, but this time the Switch 2 version falls a little further behind the rest, especially in terms of vegetation and shadows.
  • Fatal Frame II Remake has a remarkable visual finish, but performance currently has room for improvement on all platforms.

30fps

When nearly every company is releasing games at 60fps which has basically become the standard for this generation, these guys put out a title that doesn't even look particularly impressive and still runs at an unstable 30fps.

It has to be one of the most tone-deaf decisions in recent years, I genuinely don't understand it, It's not as if the graphics are demanding enough to justify that kind of performance...

Unless this is another Dragon's Dogma 2 case where they release it in an unfinished state and then patch it to run at 60fps...yeah

Thank god for PC version which allow you to disable film grain and play in 60fps, or 120fps if you use stuff like smooth motion.

Katana Engine should have been taken out back years ago. They at least need to fix frame pacing if they insist on 30, and toggling for film grain on all platforms.

I play on PC, so I'm unconcerned with the consoles' performance, but I am curious as to how it ended up looking.

Question for my lovelies who played the original, how does it measure up? Is it a worthy remake in general, beyond performance oddities?

30fps may be an artistic design, not a limitation.
I think you are right, this definitely artistic choice rather than graphic limitation.

Now would I agree with devs choosing this? I don't know until I play the full game.

I'm not gonna play the demo because its my first Fatal Frame game and I wanna going in to it as blind as possible.

I don't even mind the 30fps, but can we at least achieve a stable framerate in the age of dynamic res, ai upscaling and frame generation? That's just embarrassing.

Lowest common denominators, aka the Series S and Switch 2. They for sure could have gotten the PS5 and Series X versions running better, but decided not to bother.

Maybe an update later on can increase the framerate on the consoles that can handle it.
Fun fact Fatal Frame 2 got the best version on the original Xbox back in the day.

you know a game optimization is shiet, when its running at 60 fps on PC.

How could they fail to reach a stable frame rate in a dark game with limited visibility? What's so demanding there?

Still doesn't bother me. 30fps is fine in horror games.

You just don't feel/see the judder then which is fine/more power to you...

Again, this isn't a 60 Vs 30fps thing and whether slower games are OK at 30fps, it's about OLED judder since the near instant response time is both a blessing and a curse.

I'd take 60fps and day of the week over 30, but, I could handle 30fps on my Plasma TV, on an OLED though ? I stopped playing 30fps games altogether

Graphically it had zero improvements, but it did get some extras not on PS2.

Best version today is the PS2 OG with the recent undub mod. Unless the Xbox port gets the same mod. The old undub mod for Xbox isn't very good.

I really do not understand why this is 30 fps on any console as the graphics, while decent enough, are hardly cutting edge compared with, say, something Resident Evil Requiem. Certainly, the game should be running at 60 fps on Xbox Series X, PS5 and definitely the PS5 Pro in my opinion.

Tried the demo on the PS5 Pro and hated how sluggish and laggy it felt. Definitely better on PC, which is the version I opted to buy and where it at least runs at a locked 60 fps on my system. A really great game and my first experience with the Fatal Frame franchise but really sould have been better optimised for the consoles with 60 fps in mind.

I think there's a mod for it on PC that allows it to run at 120fps without issue, according to the Steam forums anyway.

What I found most egregious though was the low resolution "film grain" that looked incredibly poor. Instantly turned that off.

I played this through on PC. The 60 FPS was unstable enough that I got regular VRR flicker. enabling smooth motion helped reduce it somewhat. that damn thing that's unkillable had some sort of smoke effect that really hits the frame rate.

This is a slow game and the lack of responsiveness adds to the tension.
This is one of those games that doesn't need a 60fps mode just good framepacing.

I think this is the second game this gen to not have a 60fps option

Gotham Knights, Ant game is 30fps on PS5 and XSX (60 on Pro), Starfield was 30fps for months/years, same story about Plague Tale and Hellblade 2. Final XVI had 60fps mode but it was practically unusable vs. 30fps mode. I think Jedi Survivor also has shit performance mode for months/years so it was better to stick to 30fps?

Those are the games that come to my mind right now.

You're right, I forgot about Gothal Knights.

What's Ant game ?

Empire of Ants. Motherfuckers locked base console version in 30fps lock for no good reason at all, other than maybe marketing for PS5 Pro (they only need to drop resolution to make it run in 60fps on base PS5).

30 fps feels more cinematic to me than 60 fps. I find it so dissapointing that console users want it too when it was always a PC thing.
