Bravely Default HD remaster shadow dropped on Steam.

I swear SE has no strategy when it comes to releases. Why is it not on PS5? And they wonder why people keep skipping their games. I already have it on Switch 2, but an actual physical version would've been nice.

Not on PS5 so far, surprisingly.

PLAYANYWHERE!!!

LOS ANGELES (Mar. 12, 2026) Today, SQUARE ENIX released one of the most beloved RPGs of the century, BRAVELY DEFAULT FLYING FAIRY HD Remaster, digitally on PC via Steam, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC, with support for Xbox Play Anywhere. Compatible with both the ROG Xbox Ally and Steam Deck, players can experience the epic adventure in an HD remaster, with quality-of-life updates and exciting minigames, now across additional platforms.

It was the same with Octopah I think. It will be released on PS5 some time after.

Nintendo probably paid for a longer exclusivity deal against Playstation.

Sony vs Nintendo is heating up, expect more 2nd/3rd party deals like this to happen in the next gen.

So Nintendo paid Square to keep this off PS5 only?

I'd kinda understand a money hat move to keep it exclusive on the Switch, but paying Square to keep it off the PS5 only seems really petty.

dqvii
xenoblade chronicles x stealth release
mhs3
crimson desert

and now this? nah, fuck that

So they're avoiding one of the big jrpg powerhouse consoles or is it not coming to ps5? I actually would buy this for somebody I had in mind but for me, I'm interested in the PC version but is it me or should it not be a little cheaper after all this time?

Nice, never got to play this on the 3DS.

Is the remaster just that? Better graphics? Or have they made any other changes for better or worse?

Never played bravely default, but heard good things from a friend. Was this the one that was one of the early Switch 2 "exclusives"? Remaster of a 3ds game?

Two minigames they added. Dancing and an Airship one.

New UI for platforms that aren't a 3DS(dual screens).

Fast Forward. Speed up encounters and now cutscenes/dialogue from 50%-200%.

Online Compatibility for modern systems. DS games used StreetPass Local and Online which is largely defunct.

------------

I'll personally wait for a Bravely Second shadowdrop and maybe a Bravely Third. I still own my 3DS original copies so the very minor HD graphic uplift is pretty pointless for me.

Both companies are gearing up to fight each other and Sony clearly wants to gain in-roads in Japan so it makes sense.

Similar things happened for Octopath as well iirc.

Isn't Bravely Second already available on Steam?

You are confusing Bravely Second for Bravely Default 2. Different games. Bravely Second takes place in the same World as Bravely Default. BDFF 2 is a different world. It would make sense for Bravely Third to connect the 2 via the Sword of the Brave.

Man, consoles are really fucking boring now. I actually thought this would be a S2 exclusive, but of course not.

Anyway, remaster is great. Dunno if you can buy the uncensored Japanese version (which is fully in English) on steam, but the game was still censored in the us just like the original… so keep that in mind if you care about that sorta stuff.

Thanks man. When it comes to Square I'm usually worried about dumb censorship but I guess this one is fine, being a chibi game and all that.

This screenshot looks kind of terrible tho, makes me wonder if I should just stick to my 3DS whenever I end up playing this game.

I heard the last act is a slog, did they improve on that in the remastered version?

Nah, it's the same as before. Oddly, that part of the game bothered me the first time around, but not this time. Maybe it's because I used the speed up for battles or just because the game plays much more smoothly, but I enjoyed the game from start to finish this time.

The switch 2 version looks really good in person - waaaaay better than the original, I'd argue. The remaster is still censored unless you buy the Japanese release, which is still entirely in English.

Oh wait, so they censored the damn chibi game?

Holy fuck Square what are you doing. Thanks for letting me know man, I'll avoid this version of the game.

You know exactly why they are doing what they are doing. The censorship honestly isn't as bad as say recent Dragon Quest. And why I'll never buy those DQ 1-3 Remakes.

It's only a couple outfits being given booty shorts, one removed outfit and altering a boss design that wasn't necessary since they were an eldritch being to begin with.

Yeah man, DQIII was the first of their games that I did skip because of the stupid censorship. I still have the SNES and GB versions if I ever want to give it another go so whatever, not a big loss.

All they've achieved with this recent policy is to make me think twice before buying any of their products. And even if the censorship is just some very small detail, out of principle I just can't support that with my money.

Did fucking Cthulu look like some ethnicity before or what. What the fuck lmao.

One of the bosses is a flying bug girl and it was too suggestive so they put a dress on her. Can't say who because it's a big spoiler.

Given I have the original BDFF that wasn't censored at all the original design is much cooler to look at.

For me this is the only game in the series that had an nice story. It was an cool subversion of many FF tropes. And then the sequel resolved the things that where left open in the first in the same way Star Wars - The Last Jedi: not bothering much with them and just coming up with easy and fast solutions because they don't care about them.

Also, the Ringabel plotline remains unsolved.

Indeed we need a Bravely Third but not sure we will ever get one.

It still looked it's best on the 3DS, the artsyle and locations were made to pop nicely with the 3D effect on the 3DS. Was an amazing experience.

Likely.

The whole series will be on Playstation in the future, just like Ocotopath. I already own the remaster on Switch 2, so I won't double dip. Great game if no one has played it, like amazing JRPG

Alright Square Enix, settle down with the hyperbole a bit...
lol ok, not that amazing though, Square needs to fucking chill lol
