Marathon releases to 87,000 players on Steam and 87% Positive Reviews (sponsored by coachmcguirk91)

Looks like the downtrend has started as it hits midnight. Unless it suddenly jumps next hour, looks like on a Saturday it's -2% vs yesterday.

Every game among the top leaders except Bongo Cat, Marvel Rivals and Marathon had a higher peak than its Friday's peak (which can be at different hours of the world depending where it's most popular). During peak time, Marathon will edge up to 15th rank. Now it's 20+.

It's interesting that it keeps falling in daily user rank, seems to have mostly stabilized in peak CCUs, and is also holding steady or even rising slightly in revenue.

Dropped 30K or 33% from its peak last Saturday and it wasn't high to begin with.
The game clearly has high steam reviews (90%), so obviously, when people try it, they love it. This obsession and goalposts over numbers isn't healthy. I can bet the people lambasting it now didn't expect it to be as high as it is right now. They expected a full flop, and when they didn't get it, they grasp for straws. Any number, and chart anything.

The game is just juicy and choosing a faction and runner to main is just *chef's kiss*.

Don't care. This game needs high player count to survive, not good reviews. No goalposts is being moved. The game is performing badly and you're spinning this because you like it. Good for you. Changes nothing to its numbers.

High player count to survive. Survive what? The concordpocolype? No? A week? A month? When is too long?
If it was personal preference that would be fine, but it's clear that when people play the game, they love it.

If it lost players, then your "when people try it, they love it" makes no sense. Some people loved, that is an fact, but also, some people just dropped it fast and the game is suffering from that. People shouldn't be pressed on "you have to try it then you'll love it". The game didn't do much to bring a lot of players and now is on the way down.

You're talking like people need to do a reality check, but you should look at yourself first.

THIS GAME IS MIDDLING SUCCESS. BOTH SIDES STFU YOU ARE WRONG!!!!!!!!!!

Sony you dumb AF if you thought this would Arc Raiders and some! Bungie hater you dumb AF if you thought this is Concord/Highguard 2(3?)

Drops Mic! Close thread?

Marathon is a live service game. This needs money to maintain and the money is made by having players buy your game or purchase in-game content. If it doesn't bring in enough money, the plug gets pulled.

Irrelevant to the discussion.

This game isn't a success by any stretch of the imagination.

Please. This thread is annoying bait.

Money? So you know without a doubt if it's bringing in "enough" money.
Also, how is preference irrelevant to the discussion. You mentioned it.
A game that can open the wallet of a lot of people including myself, is clearly fun, is a great game, is a win.

I know that this player count is pathetic and that it's the biggest on PC. 58K for a AAA GAAS shooter in its second weekend is weak.

I never brought up preference. You're the one who keeps talking about it.

Um.. Ok.
You're making these number goalposts, when you should be asking if the game is good or not. We're not financial accountants, we're gamers.

And given how updates don't need huge campaigns, cinematics, and the like, it is probably pretty lean on the update team, and built for the long haul.

OK What % of games released on Steam average 40 k CCU a week after release? a tiny tiny %! Yes this game is made buy 1/3 of Bungie. See how those things cancel themselves out?

This is 3000% more successful than Concord and 1/4 as sucessfull as Arc Raiders. ITS A MIDDLING SUCCESS.

What % of games are made by a billion dollar studio with a huge marketing campaign?

Concord is the biggest commercial failure of all time in video games. Marathon being 1/4th as successful as Arc Raiders points to it being a failure, not a middling success.

Arc Raiders is currently going through its worst period since launch. This seems like it would be a great chance of Marathon to scoop up all those people who have bounced off that game.

There's easily over 500k players who probably are no longer playing Arc. Where did they go? Even a 100k.

Marathon must find a bigger audience. I don't believe that the execs, who think in terms of numbers, will be happy here despite some people on the internet telling them that the game is fun.

It's only been a little over a week but somehow it feels much longer

Flew by for me. Probably because I've been having a ton of fun playing the game instead of refreshing a chart non-stop.

This has to be the saddest thread in GAF history. Makes the forum look really bad.

The game is getting good word of mouth from people that are playing the game and reviews haven't really hit yet. It's hard to judge it as a success or a failure yet. Is it getting the start Bungie had hoped probably not. But it seems like it's going to have a good following.

Skimming all the top shooters, it seems from beginning of the year (when ARC started tailing off till now), Delta Force, Helldivers 2 and RS Siege all have gone UP!

Just a genuine advice Yurika (or anyone else campaigning for this game): let the time do the talking. If it really is a success (even a moderate one), you'll be proven right in a few weeks.
Because for now you just look like this:

You quoted a post to insult me where I only shared some little objective data we have to make an analysis and a rough estimate, I assume because you don't like the data I shared and because you can't stand to see people not attacking a game you apparently hate or something.

I give you a genuine advice KyoZzz: shut the fuck up and go fuck yourself, you pathetic troll.

Comparing a launch week game like Marathon beating a second week game like RE9 is hilarious. That's like saying Limbus Company at rank #10 is one of the greatest sellers ever. If you really what to compare Sales Ranks who is better, it should be week aligned.
I didn't compare that, I compared the first week sales of RE Requiem vs my personal rough estimate of the first week of Marathon with the still too early data we have.

Separatedly from that, I shared Steam's weekly top sellers ranking of the week where Marathon released (and also was RE Requiem's 2nd week), which for some reason seems to butthurt some people.

Thanks, Forrest

Went to check it and right now Marathon has 49,967 CCU, which puts it in the top 27 most played game right now, being some of them above it being F2P games or apps like Wallpaper Engine, FiveM or Bongo Cat.

Top 27 out of 125,026 titles available on Steam (only 0.021% Steam products are above it). It's all time CCU peak so far it's the top 243 out of 125,026 titles (only 0.19% of the titles ever released on Steam are above it).

It's also worth mentioning several similar GaaS didn't have their peak on the first week, but instead on the 3rd or 4th weekend.

Send that in an email to execs at Bungie and Sony. I'm sure they'll be pleased to know they're above Anime Sex Slop 3 and Asset Flip 5.

Arc Raiders was a fad meme game, most of the missing 500K+ were likely playing their first extraction shooter and decided they didn't like the sweaty's running Seal Team 6 groups on them, they just jumped on "the current thing" bandwagon to try it out with friends. I have long said Bungie's biggest hurdle would be convincing mass market players (especially on consoles) to play an extraction shooter that draws the most toxic try hards in all of videogames.

Not needed, they aren't idiots who think that a game is a failure and must be shut down because Arc Raiders or GTAV had more CCUs on Steam. They don't give a fuck about CCUs.

They have the proper key metrics, which don't include the CCUs and include things like the revenue that the game made in all platforms, its DAU, retention and average revenue per user.

Nioh 3 announced 1m sales after two weeks, and Marathon is performing almost identically to it on Steam (ccu) so far. Which of those has a greater % of its overall sales on PC, I couldn't say.

If today's pattern matches last Saturday (Euro peak higher than US peak), we may be close to the peak for today, which would be lower than yesterday. Can America bros save the day and avoid this humiliation?
CCUs are shit to estimate sales, particularly of multiplatform games.

Marathon as of now has these estimates for Steam (doesn't include PS, Xbox and other PC stores like Epic or Humble Bundle, and remember PS and Bungie traditionally sell way better in console than in PC):
~700.0 k by VG Insights
~851.4 k by Gamalytic
~960.1 k by PlayTracker
~761.2 k with the user reviews x 25 method

Meaning, doing a conservative rough estimate Marathon sold around 2M-2.5M units (+addons) on its first week, assuming PC units sold are almost half of the total (around 1M) while console, particularly PlayStation pretty likely did around the same or more (maybe around 1-1.5M).

It's also worth mentioning that many paid GaaS, like Helldivers 2 or EAFC to name a couple examples, make more revenue with digital addons than with the game sales.

Not sure what you're implying in that post. If the "idiot" and "shut down' was some kind of throw back at me I've made it pretty clear that I don't want this game to be shut down, nor have I called it a failure. I'll give you the idiot bit.

It's a poor argument though. There's a lot of steps between where the game is at and shutdown. And no, there's no case of the game getting shut down simply because its CCU is lower than Arc.

Of course Sony has the stats, it a pointless thing to say so, Sony offices have air to breathe too, which is why we're not discussing issues of asphyxiation.

It's also pointless to say that this game is higher than most other games on Steam. Anything basically competent is going to be higher than the majority of Steam. Steam has a spam issue, the number of games on it is as meaningless as the number of emails sent each day, it tells us nothing of the quality of a good email.

I'll have you know that the people who actually played Asset Flip 5 for more than 4 hours loved Asset Flip 5. I am having a blast with it.

It's less pointless than to assume it's a failure or that would shut down soon because of the Steam CCUs it has or because Arc Raiders had more, as many people said here (not talking about you in particular). It would be like to say Arc Raiders and GTAV are failures too because CS2 had bigger CCUs, which is also dumb.

Only solution now is to do a Marvel crossover with dance emotes. Bring in Kamala Khan and Doctor strange
Sony will release Marvel Tokon on PS5+PC this August 6.
