Marathon releases to 87,000 players on Steam and 87% Positive Reviews (sponsored by coachmcguirk91)

Don't you know the AAA playbook yet? Take a multilayer "mode" from games the prior gen had alongside full games, release it as its own game and milk the shit out of it while people accept it because it has skins that align with their kinks or ideology all the while developers play lip service to their community.

Get the backing of a major publisher that can make the media bend to their will and you have a recipe for success. This is why it's such a good thing that marathon is failing. It blows this whole thing away. Even Sony couldn't gaslight players.
I guess I didn't know the playbook, and I hate it.

The only reason why I am frustrated is that I play Marathon and can see that they could have made a really really cool and stylized FPS and it could have been awesome. But instead we get a garbage man game. And while the garbage man game is ok (imo), it could have been so much more.

Imagine a mix of Another World and Mirror's Edge. They could have really done cool things. This art direction works so much better in a story driven FPS.

As a MP, I would have gone in a different direction, with huge mazes full of traps, like The Hive in the Resident Evil movie.

See below for an example.
LMAOOOOO this is why you get so upset and bitter???

Seeing as no one else called him out (probably in fear of retaliation or being ousted from the group :messenger_fearful:)
Hollywood Hitman Hollywood Hitman YOU ARE A BAD BOY! THAT WAS MEAN!

Feel better now Branded?

I assume the rest of you CCU Census-Takers are in agreement with this sort of rhetoric?
I seriously don't care, if you can't defend yourself except by attacking and putting everyone in the same basket, it's your loss but don't act surprised when you get called out.

And call be bitter all you want
Bitter.

but that does not change the behavior of some of you gents in this thread lol.
Cry me a river. How about the behavior of the chills? I guess it's ok because you love the game but truth is it's the CCU thread, and the CCU is shit. So we are making fun of it rather you like it or not.

If you find it so difficult to bear, stay in the safe place that is the OT.

Edit: and btw you are acting like every other chill, quoting part of my message and ignoring the rest because you have nothing to disprove me.

The paypigs are going to have to spend a lot more than $100 in skins to save Bungie.
There's nothing to buy lol. It's the worst cosmetic store ever and didn't get new cosmetics weekly like other games.

If I'm Sony I'm baffled and pissed.

Marathon is a service, not a good. Yet it is packaged and presented as good that you can purchase.

The very fact they sell that skin is already bad, for again they are selling a service as if it were a good.
Ugh this age old yelling at the cloud thing again. This is the inherent nature of digital goods and services. These things all run on services. A multiplayer game can not be run indefinitely. The community can move on, the game itself can go under or the cost of server upkeep is simply too much. This is regardless of whether you bought it as a one-time purchase or if it's been a live service title. A software package I bought or subscribed to can be broken by an update or simply no longer be supported for a whole host of reasons.

I bought Windows but if Microsoft bricks my BIOS tomorrow I'd be hard pressed getting any financial rewards or otherwise from them. Or to take it further: I can buy a car but it can break down. It can get repaired but it cannot be maintained indefinitely. At some point you will have to get a new(er) one. The old one stops working or has features that are no longer supported. This is also true for a lease car of course. You can pay a monthly fee for one but at a certain point the one you had from the start will be swapped for a different or newer model.

I've spent hundreds on Warframe or Counter-Strike, both won't be online forever. At some point they will die or I will. The money and time spent have been valuable in my opinion.

No matter how much we would like to it's not realistic to expect games to forever work, even those on a disc. It sucks, yes I agree with you but it's also a reality of this industry. I'm not sure as to why this is now suddenly an issue with Marathon.

You asked for an example. I gave you one.

But it seems we are in agreement then, I can come in here and discuss in good faith and you can then uhh call me bitter for defending myself (something you just admitted I should do). Steller logic!

I'd rather be bitter than stupid.

Which part would you like to get a specific reply to? It all seems like more of the same

Not following, but playing.

Having a blast. Great game.

Also, for those of you busy hate fucking Marathon, is it gay if your penises touch?

Now THIS I can agree with lol. The store items are very underwhelming to say the least.

Do not read if you get easily triggered by adults spending money: I would have spent more on the game otherwise but the in-game cosmetics so far, especially in the store are ass.

Nobody said extraction should go away. I said that it should be a mode in a more full featured game. the idea that Bungie spent $250 million to build four maps where you run around collecting literal, actual garbage is insane to me.
Embark spent 100 million building 5 maps where you run around collecting literal, actual garbage and they're swimming in piles of cash now.

A lot of people still don't understand the depth and complexity of the genre. It's not a mode like CTF or TD, it's a PvP RPG.

Any genre can be described in such obtuse manner if you're not willing to understand the art form.

None of this bothers to differentiate something that simply breaks vs something designed to break at the developers will.

There is a very big, obvious difference between a software that simply stops getting official support or sees its users dwidling out, vs a software with a literal kill switch embedded into it.

Case in point: Unreal Tournment games, old CS titles, Half Life deathmatch mode, online Quake; all still work despite all the entropy forces of time. Concord doesn't, neither will marathon if it pulls the plug, because they were designed to stop working, unlike all previous examples.

It was really fascinating how so few of you could see it. I saw it the first time I played Vigor.
You don't seem to be living in a healthy reality

holy cope

There should be CFT and TDM in this game at least. There should be an actual campaign. We used to get games with all these elements in one, now they say "nah we will just have the garbage man mode and that's enough."

Imagine if Mass Effect 3 was just the multiplayer section. And they said "nah we will tell you the story in between your runs on the maps." That's where we are at now. Of course ME3 was also a full large RPG with this multiplayer attached and a lot of people really liked it.
Who cares how much money they spent on it? Was it your money? Are you an investor? Do you have insight into their financials? How much it costs to develop a game?

Would you have played it if it had a singleplayer story mode? Does every game need to have both a singleplayer and multiplayer portion for you to feel satisfied making a purchase on? Does Tarkov need to have a singleplayer mode as well for instance?

You did not defend yourself or discuss in good faith, you posted some stupid things by generalizing like this, and that's just one message:

I thought I was surrounded by alphas
Here you are playing the victim as I did not saw anyone post "I'm an alpha for not playing Marathon" lmao wtf.

the OT people being "little bitches" that get no pussy (or some manchild shit like that)
Playing the victim, part II. I still saw no insult like that btw

*alphas that scrutinize player numbers for a game they never had interest in
Playing the victim, part III

using bad faith arguments
Playing the victim, part IV. Seriously I tried to engage with Men_in_Boxes Men_in_Boxes but it led to nothing as he stopped responding once proved wrong, failing to show a single fact or anything to back any of his claim.

getting personal when met with opposition
Oooooooh the irony, when did I get personal with you? You, meanwhile:
I'd rather be bitter than stupid.
Yeah, getting personal right?

Shill not chill btw
Ah thanks, still learning English ^^

Those are some valid examples yes and I am happy they still run, for the most part, in all their glory. But this goes into a deeper discussion on DRM, always online models (singleplayer games included), server cost etc.

It's the current state of the industry, for better or worse, where you can't have something on the scale of Fortnite or Warzone with decentralized servers for instance and expect the community to cough up those costs as well. So whether its free to play or priced games... they all inevitably go under. It's an unfortunate reality and one I don't think we'll ever see changing.

I just hope this all somehow leads to Extraction games being made less :P. such a shitty game genre.
You should give GTFO a try (no that's not an insult lol but the actual name of the game).

Witchfire shares many elements of the genre as well but is entirely singleplayer and also playable offline. Actually one of the best games of recent years tbh.

GTFO is the single hardest coop experience I've ever done and I only managed to do 60-70% of the level with people from the official discord.

I'm excited for their next game den of wolves.

It doesnt have to be one or the other single player and GAAS can coexist. No need to narrow it to black or white.
It could coexist if it depended on players choice, but as we saw recently from sony, singleplayer dev studios are forced/tempted( i trully dont give a damn which one of the two it is, its awful anyways) to make gaas games and we all know how it ends- with studios clousure like in bluepoint case.
Pubs/ studio heads/top bosses dont want those genres to exist, they going all in on gaas no matter the sacrifices, so us, as veteran players gotta put our foot down and send those greedy stupid mofos to the 7th circle of hell 🔥🔥 :messenger_smiling_hearts:

Hey I'm French !
It's very hard, but really beautiful imo (but I may be biased lol).
Welp sorry then, brah, u are kicked out of marathon hate force and forcefully put on the defense force, partially to make numbers more equal, partially coz of white flag waving as a national sport, better be safe than sorry here :D

This is hilarious. It's really not lmao.

I mentioned The Division which again had a full story, map, and other modes in addition to extraction. If Marathon launched with all that, I would not be saying this. And The Division added modes over the years while Bungie is talking about unlocking a map and doing server wipes. This is GRIM.

It's weird that the first example of this game style has way more content and is way more fleshed out than the brand new examples coming out today. and the new examples are being defended.

I didn't think the marathon felt smooth. But since the sys requierments were so low, I initially thought I was just imagining that it wasn't running quite smoothly.

So today I turned on the FPS counter, and lo and behold, not only am I not hitting 120 FPS, it never even goes up to 100 FPS, and the lowest drops were around 55 FPS...

7600x, 9700xt, 1440p using fsr on quality.

I don't know what any of this means. You suggested that Bungie was crazy for making an Extraction Shooter when ARC Raiders sold 15 million in 4 months. The genre clearly has big time appeal.

This isn't weird at all. You are aware of how Live Service works.

This is bullshit and you know it. Server costs are only high when they have to support millions of players on multiple matches. Its perfectly possible to host a home server for you and 5 friends, heck even all the way up to 100 players would work on a better machine.

There is no tecnical reason for it to be like this. It is a deliberate business decision because they know its harder to sell $20 dollar skins and battle passes when players have the power to host games their own way, not to mention its much harder to herd them towards newer slop when the old stuff works just fine.

They have no one to talk to in there.

You should be careful what you wish for, this is Bungie and they're one step away from gatcha developers when it comes to monetization of their products. I'd prepare your lube because their shitty practices are coming, especially now that they know that the retail price alone isn't going to keep them afloat.

Get ready for the F2P, PS+ nickel and dime approach, coming to an extraction shooter near you!
Having a blast. Great game.
Sure thing, bud.
go back to the ot. ......last I checked sadly was number 3 on PSN game chart
No, let them stay. It's amusing and the fact they are leaking over here now is pretty telling.

BTW, it's 16th on US PSN, (3 spots below Arc Raiders, btw) which is the only market it's actually selling in and still has pathetic numbers. But at least it's not as bad as on Xbox where it basically doesn't exist.

Yeah, both Witchfire and Zero Sievert looks like fun SP extraction themed games. Got them both wishlisted ...but as always - so many games, so little time. 😌

Oh I didn't get triggered. But it's clear as day that you did. For someone who loves marathon, your sure as hell are spending a lot of time here during its peak.

I don't think a Halo MCC port to the PS5 ever started. It's a big project and a chore to get everything to work on another platform. I think the PS platform is going to get the Halo CE remake as an intro to the series and then Halo 7.
No I know it isn't the mcc, I just mean I want at least one halo on ps5 still meaning the CE remake, if they were to stop putting Xbox exclusives on ps5 with the changes they're making etc
