Marathon releases to 87,000 players on Steam and 87% Positive Reviews (sponsored by coachmcguirk91)

It easily can over time. It will generate multiple billions over the next decade

Billions
Evil Laugh Reaction GIF

They did not invest +5 billion to maybe break even over the course of a decade with just one good result.
I didn't say Sony would be happy with Helldivers 2 being its only major success. I said it is why they won't give up on GAAS games. The risk/reward is worth it. All it takes is one major hit

And major acquisitions, like Bungie, are not made to break even on that investment within a decade

lost another 6k over weekend. Pretty much 3k a day.

Game will be shutdown in two weeks at best at this rate. Unless they can come up with some huge content drops every week this won't save them.
Ranked goes live Saturday. Cryo is in game but players just have to unlock it now. Giant update today too long to list the fixes and improvements - some of which are UI specific and better vault space.

Really good stuff.

I'm going to start calling Men in Boxes, my wife. Bro is wrong about everything

Run from it if you must, but you can never escape...

when ll the maintenance be over ?

I am not a fan of Marathon and have said several times it was going to struggle but you know the servers were being taken down when you posted the 2k players and that the servers just came back online

Not sure if you don't understand server maintenances or just not arguing in good faith

i just wanna know cause i never saw a maintenance take this long, now if this is the kind of numbers this game can pull a week after release all i can say is that servers wont last very long.

Almost same numbers last week when they did maintenance and got back into the 50k+ later that day

Again I too think this game is in a lot of trouble and likely doesn't survive but I understand games going down weekly for maintenance as I play a lot of World of Warcraft and World of Tanks

Hello fellow unemployed & maidenless! how is it going today?. It looks like the game stabilized or it's bleeding too slow for meme material. I'm afraid that can no longer be involved in the thread (also Crimsom Desert is out soon and i might buy it).

Bottomed out at a new low late night before maintenance at 16k and change. About -10% than previous low.

Hard to know how it's exactly trending as servers have been up for only about 2 hours and need to give players time to grab lunch and log back in when they feel like it.

So the rumours were true and the server maintenance also included all the patches and new map content.

Right now, the completed noon hour EST, yesterday 33k, today 35k. Completed 1 pm EST, yesterday about 36k, now about the same number at 36k with 35 min to go (up trend). So looks like this hour should blow past 36k. Maybe 38-39k. Who knows.

So looks like the content is boosting the CCU today vs yesterday about 6% based on noon hour. But need to see what 1 pm hour finalizes at. Assuming it keeps trending up the next half hour, could be about the same %.

New Weekly Top Sellers ranking. Was #3. Now #8

There is no new content just fixing QOL issues. Cryo releases this weekend. That could bring more players to the grind leading up to it

I'm confused. Why is Cryo out this weekend?

I thought it was added in today's patch, but the process to unlock it is based on player actions. So doesn't that mean it'll be "released" when players do whatever they need to do to access it?

There's definite truth to this idea. The game has absurd depth.

Can you explain this in simple terms.

I've probably watched about 8+ hours of Shroud play the game and hour 1 looked basically the same as hour 8 to me. Him going into a map picking up keycards to open certain rooms to tick boxes like "put thing A in thing B" then he gets out of the map with some loot and repeats the process.

I'm sure there's meaning to putting keycards in things and checking off missions, and perhaps that's not the part of depth you're talking about, and you're more meaning the nuance of gunplay and environment knowledge.

Oh I also saw a few other events where he needed to go into a sort of restricted zone, but again on a surface level it seemed like another quest to tick a box.

I'm not trying to downplay, but perhaps this is an area of weakness for Marathon where a casual observer isn't seeing what a 40+ hour player is because one piece of loot looks like any other.

Are you for real? How many decades are we talking about here? Because for that to happen it'll need a lot of time, it's not just to cover the costs of all of these GAAS failures, it seems like, being their only successful one, it also needs to recoup the +3Billion thrown in the trash for Bungie buyout as well...

They'll need it.

Right off the bat, Pete Parsons stated Bungie was running in the red a couple years ago. And that's when destiny was doing better.

Sony also paid out $1.2B in retention bonuses to keep staff when they bought them out, and recently wrote off $250M in the value of Bungie in an earnings report.

So right off the bat Sony is in the hole $1.45B on Bungie alone out of $3.6B they paid in total. And that doesnt even include all the GAAS costs of cancelled games, trainwrecks like Concord, and soon to bomb out Horizon Hunters and Fairgames.

Helldivers 2 profits are a fraction of all this. And Marathon will be a fraction of H2. In fact, Marathon will be a big money loss.

What was the other hunk of shit you enjoyed? Babylon's Fall?

Looks like you're in the lead in the questionable taste category 2-1
Babylons fall suffered in Same ways:
-Art style people didnt like
-GaaS title
-Platinum had done some shit to piss people off around that time I recall

It actually had super dope combat and IMO the best platinum game combat but folks weren't about an action game GaaS tile.

I've never gone out to speak up for Babylons Fall. It needed way more time in the oven to flesh out the dough earlier quests and the art redone.

Marathon is an amazing game in its current state that can only get better if Sony will give Bungie the rope for a year.

Ranked this weekend and cryo any second the community figured out the puzzles.

For their whole live service venture to be profitable they'd literally need a Fortnite tier hit. Which is never going to happen.
i think they just need to have a destiny 2 tier hit. Which they probably will have in the next 5 years. The bungie acquisition isn't a failure just because a new ip of theirs doesn't hit; it will be a failure if their established ip's also don't hit.

Some of it is preference, if you like the atmosphere its easy to get immersed, if not then you probably wont. Yes the game is about completing objectives like any other game. But the depth, is the amount of customization of loadouts etc. varying gameplay options etc are what makes it fun now. Its all new, its still in honeymoon phase. But the way the game is made to b updated, they can keep it fresh. The PVP and the PVE element works and works well. Its like Destiny, except you have PVP encounters with the PVE which keep it always changing and you don't keep your loot. Not need to sunset etc to keep it fresh. in that realm its familiar feeling yet different enough to stand on its own. If you really have watched 8 hours of gameplay.. I would imagine there is enough intrigue to keep you interested enough to splurge the $40 to give it a run.

Were you or anyone else here a fan of that other game.....I think Gearbox made it.....

......Battleborn

Biggest problem with battleborn was probably that it came out around the time that Overwatch did and looked similar. But overwatch was a gigantic success and somehow was unaffected negatively by being a GAAS.

Right off the bat I could tell nobody would want to play Babylon. It had a weird thing going on where characters had all that weird shit floating around them like the old cartoon Visionaries. Depending how many characters are on screen and what is floating around, you cant even see whats going on when everyone is attacking each other. Who would want to play that?

I dont think GAAS is automatically a turn off. There's tons of successful games that are GAAS. Most of the top played games are going to be GAAS, so it can work.

Is it finished enough to let reviewers release reviews yet?
Cryo Archive is technically in the game, just needs community unlock. Assuming reviewers still care and have been playing enough to meet the minimum requirements, they should be able to release their full reviews soon.

U reckon hermen "the hitman" hulst will be patient enough to give bungie 5 more years of funding after such a flop like marathon? He had 0 scrupples with bluepoint and they actually launched very high quality game aka demons souls remaster ;)
And keep in mind bungie will require tons more funding/upkeep cost vs much smaller tighter bluepoint and with destiny2 dwindling and huge loss on marathon they are strongly in the red already...

I never played Lawbreakers. But I do remember it was actually a good game with good reviews. But it didnt last long. I guess everyone stuck with OW?
Yeah it was compared to OW but wasn't that. It was an arena shooter.

It had the same level of content as concord which even back then is a no go.

Needed a year more in development.

76 meta score with 6.4 from users, i wouldnt consider it "good game" . I mean even concord got 62 meta and that 76 isnt that much higher :P

Think about this, same genre concord maybe deserved 2/10 and got 62/100, so lawbreakes at this scale, getting 14/100 more could be 4/10 game at best :P
That alltime peak ccu was superterrible too, barely 7k players:

BTW: Have a good rest of day discussing Marathon! I'm outta here rest of day. Heading out soon to meet people for dinner downtown and going the Leafs game.

For all the Marathon supporters.... were just having fun here talking numbers. No different than cheesing CCUs about Highguard, Dustborn or SW Outlaws etc....

If you enjoy the game, go for it. I like games nobody would give a shit about like old relics like Wayne Gretzky Hockey 2 on PC back in the day, and more recently Clover Pit. I'm going to start playing that Gamepass game Minishoot (whatever it's called), and I bought a game on Steam recently called Rogue Dungeon for $8. Who really cares.

I think they need to fire Hermen; hopefully that decision is not his to make though. :pie_pensive:

not looking good they shut down blue point tho
