Starting today, more games benefit from new PSSR upscaling on PS5 Pro

More love for PSSR2 hair (in this game difference is massive):

Couple more quick looks: Nioh 3 looks noticeably sharper to me, Rise Of the Ronin too, but its been awhile so harder to judge.

Yeah, I thought so. But it's still super funny to see, secret message with only "VRR" as a clue, haha.
Haha. Probably the only english word in the sentence. I remember this happening in a project I worked on with Japanese text because we had messed up Unicode support. Everything looked "redacted" in ASCII, except the English words!

Tested a few games out:
  • Assassin's Creed Shadows: Very noticeable improvement. 60fps mode looks super nice now - very high res and detailed, without the flickering and blurring that used to occur on foliage. Looks "4K".
  • Star Wars Jedi Survivor: HUGE improvement - the boiling is gone! Looks super sharp and high res. Still a bit of oddity with thin foliage, especially when slowly panning the camera. I think this is largely a problem with how their RT/AO works. Probably need more rays per pixel and/or a better denoiser - I don't think it's something an upscaler can fix.
  • Spider-Man 2: Big improvement as well, but also some issues. Previously there was a lot of aliasing/flickering on building and window edges, even when standing still. That seems completely gone. Looks a lot sharper and more detailed. However, there do seem to be some artifacts - the contrails when gliding sometimes make weird artifacts with whatever is behind them, and I saw some weird artifacting on netting around a building that was under construction. It's the building near the center of the financial district, where there's a bunch of sand around the bottom. I don't know that that was caused by PSSR2 - it may have been there before, maybe even on base PS5, I don't know - I just noticed it this time even with PSSR2.
  • Ghost of Yotei: This game was already pretty much perfect, so it's not a big difference. It does seem a little sharper, but I don't really like it on the grass - it used to look soft, probably due to slight blurring, but now it looks sharp and pointy. There was a tiny bit of speckling on distant trees with PSSR1 - that is gone now. Moire pattern on clothes when frame rate is uncapped is still present, but I think slightly lessened. I still stick with smoothed.
  • Control: This also had a lot of boiling originally (especially on foliage) which is now gone, so big improvement there. Still has specular aliasing and some boiling in the reflections, but overall not a bad picture.
So overall:
  • The biggest issue with PSSR1, the "boiling", is pretty much gone. This is a desperately needed improvement and that alone makes things much better.
  • There is a definite increase in apparent "sharpness" and detail of the picture. Generally this is a good thing, however there are places where it may be subjectively less pleasing, as on the grass in Ghost of Yotei.
  • In my opinion, in the "performance/60fps modes" I tried, the PS5 Pro now easily puts out what I would consider a 4K-equivalent image that I am more than happy with.

Did you try Outlaws at 60?
That lazy Spaniard analista de bits still hasn't uploaded anything.
Anyone has tried Toshara the city area; metallic reflective surface were a tragedy in 60 fps mode, they bobbling and pulsing repeatedly, unstable as hell even in still.

Very improved image in Star Wars Outlaws. Quality 60 fps mode.. forgot what that means right now.

This is moving the camera as fast as possible.

This is with FSR doing the same thing.

Moving fast, still pretty blurry but it was way worse before.

Some Space Marine goodness. Still has slowdowns fighting the little critters with the flame thrower, though I didn't have the latest patch installed if that makes a difference.

SH2 still looks exactly the same as it did a year ago. Still had the same weird pulsating in the plants and on the door at the start.

Rebirth there is 0 difference looking at it.

Here is the photo they shared on the blog post.

Sure as shit doesn't look like the blog post photo.

I think it's abit sly how in the blog it has came across that the named games would be updating to PSSR 2 proper. But it seems to just be the toggle.

It doesn't look like this with PSSR2. Maybe you didn't enable it or used a wrong mode. Silent Hill 2 in quality mode looks much better now, almost all the shimmering is gone.

Monster Hunter Wilds was one of the most egregious cases of PSSR looking like smeary dog shit on the Pro, which still happened to be an upgrade over the even worse looking version on base PS5. Now? It looks much better. There's some outlier issues like ghosting still being present on the spinning grindstone at the smithy giving the illusion of a lower frame rate, but you can see a lot more detail on waterfalls which used to be blurry, monster textures finally stand out... the entire game as a whole finally looks like it should have at launch.

Hope they fix the LOD texture problem as there are still low res assets in spots where there shouldn't be, kind of like the infamous door in FF7 Remake on PS4.

Tested Wukong 'Balanced' mode and initially I had a hard time spotting the difference, but around fog and sunlight/god rays you can really see the lumen GI boil on the fog with PSSR1, but PSSR2 it's crisp and clean. It was almost impossible to convey with images, so I made a video comparing them with different zoom levels for weirdos watching this on their 5 inchers for some reason.

Pretty much echo other's opinions so far.

I've tried a few, but only briefly.

GT7 looks great. I immediately noticed a sharper cockpit (the small details on the dash appear clearer). I raced at Yas Marina at night time and the trackside details look solid and the lighting really stands out. The vehicle reflections seem cleaner too. I need more time with it to get a better idea of any gains, but I'm happy so far.

I had a brief try of AW2. There are some really noticeable improvements to the image. The characters all look crisper (the FBI on the back of the coat immediately stood out) and the detail on faces stands out more during gameplay. The town looks much more detailed. I haven't played it for a while, but it seems like the added clarity helps the lighting really pop. The orange glow of the sky during an early part really stood out against the treeline.

FF7 R is super sharp. Only the pop-in spoils what is overall a fantastic image. It doesn't seem to lose any detail when moving the camera quickly either.

AC Shadows is now really detailed in performance mode. I always thought it looked a little soft prior to the update, so I played in quality mode, but now it stands up really well. It'll be interesting to see what the devs do with the update.

I'm going to try a few more later. I have F1 25, Hogwarts and Stellar Blade installing.

Considering these improvements are all solely reliant on the toggle, it's really impressive.

Hogwarts is one of the ones I tested earlier. As much of an upgrade as FF7 R honestly.

Did you have the game set to "Versatility Mode"?

Did you even enable the setting? Sh2 looks better, less ghosting, sharper image. But remember pssr is only in quality mode. It got removed from perf. And ff was showcased on versatility mode

Tried Spidey 2, BF6 and Space Marine 2. BF6 in 120hz mode looks much cleaner. Insane that it can pull of this image quality with such a low input resolution. SM2 also looks much cleaner in the performance (speed) mode.

For anybody interested in F1 25 I can tell you it looks great. One thing that really bugged me was the ghost trail behind the cars in replay mode, but it seems to have disappeared now.

GoW Ragnarok was already beautiful but now it's super crisp. God damn this is awesome

Yeah that's another I just tried. Quite a big improvement, was pleasantly surprised.

I have to say that virtually everything I've tried looks at least as good as native 4k. Stuff like Ratchet Demon's Souls etc look substantially better than that. We're talking Horizon FW kind of image quality with PICO. Really great.

Alan Wake looks much better than with PSSR1 but game still has obvious visual flaws that were never fixed:

Some of the tech decisions in AW2 boggle the mind. Whatever they are doing for reflections on consoles looks absolutely terrible, just a grainy mess, yet they insist on using it on almost every surface including hard wood as seen above. The game would have looked x2 times better just by disabling reflections on anything that isn't water.
