Whilst the internet is set ablaze due to the price increase for the Playstation 5 family of systems (tm), let's put it all on the line and place out bets. Will good guy Sony launch PS6 as a digital only system but let you slot your current $79.99 disc drive into it or do you think they will go down the path of total greed and require a completely new propriety PS6 only disc drive to be purchased? OR, do you think PS6 is just straight up a digital only system with no option for physical games?

Please no, "well they can't let you use the same disc drive because it'll be a completely new architecture and design." That is a poor excuse. The concept of the add-on drive existed long enough for them to have factored it into PS6's design. Any choice to not use it is purely intentional and not mandatory to make ps6 work as a physical piece of hardware (in my opinion). It's an add on disc drive. It's not rocket science.

I for one look forward to the Frankenstation 6.

I hope it is but I doubt it.

Even fucking plates are locked to Pro/slim.
I mean.. they are different sizes. but I am actually hoping the Drive is also compatible with PS6. I dont see the reason why they wouldnt make it this way. its not like they are gonna make a faster drive.

Knowing Sony, very likely not. The games would likely be using different cryptography keys for the encryption since there was a breach with the PS5 ones.

The keys are encrypted on a system level. not the blue ray disc drive. as long as the OS can decrypt the keys, it doesnt matter what blue ray disc they use ( just like why it doesnt recognize an xbox disc since it doesnt have the decryption for the keys on the xbox disc. but they can with the PS4 ( even though both PS4 and PS5 have different keys ).

I doubt it. Not unless they design the new PS6 around the drive. I'd rather they didn't. I don't want a PS5 Pro V2. If they can change out the drive plate and give the PS6 a distinctive look then that's great, but otherwise I'd rather buy a new drive.

Couldn't both be possible? Want an ugly Frankenstation 6, use your old drive; want a sleek new design? Buy the new drive.

Yea, you are likely correct, but Sony will use that as an excuse. PS6 drive can read PS4 and PS5 discs for BC, but PS5 disc drive can't read PS6 discs.

Plus isn't there a special connector for the disc drive, it doesn't use USB-C because that isn't secure.

It would be nice if they just threw in a plastic plate that made it jive with the new design and just did it as you're describing.

But on the other hand I think the more we tie this thing to the PS5 the more we are talking about the least "next gen" console of all the next gen consoles.

There is no technical reason why a PS6 disc wont work on PS5 disc drive. It can already read the dual layer discs too. if they don't want to support it, it will be pure greed.

but considering how much they wanna charge for the PS6, its in their best interest to tell them gamers that your drive at least will work so you dont have to pay more money for that.

No, and the PS5 DualSense and the PlayStation Portal will not work on it, either.

even that should work really.

What are you talking about? Even PS3 got an update recently.

The games(bluray/player encryption) have nothing to do with this. Keys are easily updated.

I don't think it will use the same drive simply because of the design. Unless they decide to keep the same design for the PS6 I don't see that working.

Under plate, drive itself is pretty standard stuff. They could design PS6 around it.

I think DS will work with PS6 games.

I'm just hoping Sony puts a disc drive for the PS6 that can read older PS1-PS3 discs, and work with emulation tools that their hardware can just brute-force to run better.

Wishful thinking, but that's what would get me to buy one since newer physical games are coming with gb of updates that tie me to needing a server.

Fuck that, I want the ps6 disc read blast processing version using patented Cerny optics that read data faster than any other drive to date.

If PS5 can't read CDs, so, same will happen with PS6

The PS5 goes up to 100GB via triple layer discs if Im not mistaken. Any 4k blu ray player would have same capability.

My hope is that yes, the ps5 disc attachment is compatible with the ps6.

We dunno what they will do, never expected the PS3 to be compatible with the last 2 systems at launch, but they chose to do that before.

If they wanna sell their portable too, they should also be looking more at support for older games they could also resell digitally, because it would add value to the box in the day where most new games are multi-platform. Likely won't happen, but I think there are reasons to do it.

What's with all the threads popping up lately asking questions about PS6 that none of us could possibly know the answer to until Sony tell us?

Is this what is being pushed in the discord meetings now?

You think I'm in the neogaf discord / some secret Sony discord considering how much grief I cause losers like you? If anything it's the other way around 🤪 🫠🫠

/jk

We all met and decided to troll you specifically.

You thinking that you caused me any grief when I can see through all your drama queen posts ? 😂
Gonna write my mom and tell her I lost onQ123's approval. Shame.

I'm gonna go ahead and mark you down for "Negligent; PS6 will be digital only full stop."

Thanks for the support!

That was expected. No one was surprised back then.
I remember it getting coverage because people were surprised. Most consoles would give you backwards compatibility for one gen, if at all. Only other consoles that have done the same and more have been newer Xboxes.
