Sony PlayStation are using Nvidia GPUs train advanced models to improve rendering and gameplay systems

It's just interesting information as I had no clue Sony were doing that.

It's more like deployment of ML R&D for worldwide for PlayStation but an interesting insight into their direction. They used to have teams buy small GPU systems with hobbyist infrastructures, hardware scattered across offices, researchers maintaining their own infrastructure, no visibility, no isolation, no scheduler, etc. They centralized with large-scale GPU cluster. Infosec with the old ways of doing things with local systems is probably also how Sony studios have been hacked multiple times.

It's mainly IT but it's interesting to hear them talk about the problems they had for deployment and their reflections on the allocation and scaling. "hey we're sony, we know how to deploy servers right?" to employing a company that had more experience than them, but had launch day fuckups.

What's interesting here is that PlayStation has big ML ambitions, so much so that for a long time any GPUs they were adding were basically immediately used by their researchers.

A few key slides from the presentation so you don't have to go through 40 mins of IT talk. Interesting tidbit here is the cost explosion. Their ML R&D will it tackle that eventually? I guess that's a goal for the scaling into ML.

even Sony must think AMD are shit :(
AMD isn't doing anything close to what Nvidia is doing, unfortunately. Nvidia is basically unrivalled right now, and they will be for a couple more years. If AMD doesn't get there first, Google probably will.

So 95% of companies doing what Sony is doing here is on Nvidia hardware.

it's sony that urged the team AMD to roar into action to secure the victory like the cpu Ryzen i hope( Ray tracing/Path-tracing and Fsr4 that can battle dlss almost on par)

Strongest AMD GPU right now is RX 9070 XT which ties with 4070 TI Super when it comes to RT performance.

Not really? It's just that in terms of maturity Nvidia's programmable shaders was starting this back in 2000. Hate or love him, Jensen is a monster at forward thinking and the worse thing you can seemingly do is tell him Nvidia can't achieve something cause he can and WILL get them to overdo it.

rtx 5070 ti, only in path tracing lose badly, but if it wasn't for Sony(Cerny) pushing, AMD was still at the raster even with this generation of video cards, how low have they fallen, is it possible that they don't understand?

Just Sony giving AMD a kick in the ass to get their shit together. Stop copying and start innovating. Although with AMD's R&D budget, that might be hard.

I'll bite - I have a 5080 but would still say get a 9070XT because PT is an Nvidia only tech.
?

What about PT "tech" is Nvidia only? This would be the worst time to get a GPU that doesn't do PT well imo. As a result, your 5080 will last much longer than a 9070XT. If AMD is the preferred vendor, people should just wait for RDNA 5.

interesting! I thought AMD had Sony locked up but I guess things change with time. Nvidia seems to be really kicking butt in more ways than one. and of course they have already won Nintendo and PC (mostly, not that AMD is worthless but you have to acknowledge the near complete domination of Nvidia) *edit: I'm dumb. it seems like AMD and Nvidia are both involved with PS6? :messenger_confounded: :messenger_face_screaming:

Hell yeah Sony going all in on AI and I love it. All companies will join soon. Also soon AI slop will be better than human slop. Just bough that machine learning company and now partnering with the big n. Sony and MS all in on our new future. AI for everyone.

It's honestly amazing how a videogame sector of another company needed to get AMD in shape.

Imagine if Sony just sat back and waited on AMD to innovate.....

The partnership between Sony and AMD in Project Amethyst is no coincidence; Sony needs AMD to catch up with Nvidia, or at least stay close.
