Got a free PC with no GPU, keep it or sell it?

I was at my mother-in-law's house and there was a PC she was about to throw out. I work in game dev, but this is the kind of PC I'd only seen on YouTube channels.
I'm not really up to date on consumer hardware anymore (no time), but here's what I found:
• 64GB DDR5, Trident Royal — not sure about the exact model, I always buy the cheap stuff
• Liquid cooling (it made a water gurgling sound when I turned it on)
• The motherboard has two LCD screens — one square, one rectangular — with RGB animations
• Two M.2 SSDs: 1TB and what looks like a 4TB (didn't pull that one out) — Kingston, the expensive ones
• No idea on the PSU or CPU
I tried connecting it to a monitor with no luck. The case display says "BIOS" but nothing shows up. I think the CPU has no integrated graphics, so I grabbed a GT 720 1GB for $10 to test it, still waiting for it to arrive.
My mother-in-law said her son bought it, never used it, moved out, and told her to throw it away.
My current personal machine is an ROG Ally X 😂. For work I use a company PC (PS5 dev kit) — obviously I don't use that for anything outside work and approved software.
If the cheap GPU works, I could look into a decent GPU upgrade, though those aren't cheap either. Alternatively, I could sell this thing and put it toward a MacBook (I program using Mac , and having a laptop would be nice ).
I never game on PC, only use it for work. Still, feels like a waste to let it go.

Umm that seems like a really nice computer. Probably has a high end CPU in it

Assuming you want to become a PC gamer, that is probably a monster gaming PC that just needs a GPU

If you don't want to become a PC gamer, just part it out and sell the components. The 64 GB of DDR5 is worth a shitload of money these days. The motherboard is an expensive ASUS ROG Formula so it will also sell decently on the second hand market, and if it's a high end CPU those also sell decently

Is your mother-in-law aware she is tossing out a few thousand dollars worth of computer hardware and it's far from useless trash?

If given the option, I would keep it (being a PC gamer and all) but in your situation I would sell it.

Yes i told her and my wife this is expensive (I said around 5k us), " please check with your son if I can really take it ".
He said yes . I also got an unopened asus extreme keyboard that cost around 700 us (have oled display lol) that I'm trying to sell.

I believe he tried to sell it but he only took the gpu out and gave up.

I had to put it in a a papaya box and fly with it from Taiwan to Japan (20kg) 😂

high end mobo
high end memory
high end cooling system
Truckload of fast storage space
A high end vertical GPU mounting kit.

Seems a little suspicious for a mother in law PC.

Bro.. stop fucking around and put a 5090 or a 5080 in that son of a bitch. Done deal. Nothing else to talk about... unless your finances or interests don't meet up with this. I would trade you my rig right now, just to use all of that shit with my GPU. :messenger_winking_tongue:

it's free so i'd keep it.

the 64GB DDR5 RAM alone if you sold it would get you a lot of money. so if you don't want to keep it then sell the RAM and the rest of the parts for profit.

i am assuming the rest of the PC is in good shape and fairly recent (since it's DDR5 RAM). the gurgling sound from the CPU cooler isn't bad unless it's constant. if it only lasts a few seconds then it's probably just shifting the air around. if it's constant then it's probably an old cooler with some liquid permeation so replace it with an air cooler or new liquid cooler.

all you really got to do is put in the most expensive GPU you can afford and you'll have a kick ass PC better than most people.

You should post bigger pictures without resizing them, we can almost see what's in there on desktop.

Also, sell it and gives the money back to your mother in law.

Your mother in law has even the shitty EA app installed.

Now that's working you can tell us what's the deal we're seeing here.

being ok with throwing away very expensive hardware means the son is probably rich, or it's loaded with porn he didn't want his mother to find.

Before a reformat, I would Disk sniffer those drives just to be sure... :)

You should check the BIOS and see if XMP is turned on for the RAM. The RAM is currently clocked at 4800, it could probably run faster.

Very sus, but to play along: That's a beast of a machine. Putting a GT710 GPU in it is like using charcoal to fuel a rocket ship.

Gonna sell my rog ally x for a gpu.
Give it a try , but with 2 young kids at home I may barely use it . In that case I will sell it .

My wife brother live in Tokyo now and have another pc there. He barely go back to Taiwan.

The only thing I know is that he invest in Pokémon collection card store around Tokyo, and have own stores as well.

5070... fkn peasents man....

kidding. that is actually a very good build. congrats and smart of you to keep it. the only thing i dont like about the Y60 is its too close to the glass for the GPU.

hopefully there are fans under the case for intake.

also btw, the parts inside your pc. the whole mobo with the ram and stuff. they are like 2 to 2.5k in todays market. so it was a smart choice for you to keep it. this should last you for years to come. . ( well not the gpu but still )
