Was 2013 Nintendo's worst year?

In 2013, Nintendo had:
  • Super Mario 3D World
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
  • Pokemon X/Y
  • Animal Crossing New Leaf
  • Fire Emblem Awakening
  • Pikmin 3
  • The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD
  • Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
It was the 3DS's best year on the market, just on the basis of that, I would not call it Nintendo's worst year, and would in fact call it pretty fucking great.

2016 is what I would call their worst – the Wii U was dead, the 3DS was wrapping down, the Switch wasn't even revealed yet.

I am doing great actually considering all the horrible shit going on in the world. They are just part of that shit.

I agree 2016 sucked haha

The Wii U was a disaster right out of the gate. The games released were not very good, and Nintendo lost a LOT of money.
Would not br surprised. As strangely charming WiiU is, N intendo tried EVERYTHING at once and failed in every regard for WiiU. I would bet that even today Nintendo top execs wouldn't be able to explain why the hell they insisted in a mandatory second screen, if even they could not justify it.

At least they learned this lesson with Switch in regards of 'you are seeing what you are buying, you know what is machine is capable of'

  • Mario Kart World
  • Donkey Kong Bananza
  • Pokemon Legends ZA
  • Metroid Prime 4 Beyond
  • Hyrule Warriors Age of Imprisonment
  • Super Mario Galaxy 1+2

Wow, what an argument. He replied thoughtfully to your one-sentence driveby post and you responded with a gif. You definitely got him.

Anyway, I was going to say 2016, but then I remembered they released Pokémon Sun and Moon that year. I agree that it has to be a year during the Wii U era though. Maybe 2014?

Financially, yes, since 2013-2014 fiscal year is their worst... so far.

I really enjoyed 3ds back then though, so personally it was a good year from Nintendo.

Ehh. 2013 was the moment when it became clear the "Wii" brand/casual gaming fad was deader than dead, and that Nintendo followed up their best selling console with their worst. That was probably the darkest time to be a Nintendo fan. At least by 2016 there was some hope and excitement for the possibility of a hybrid next-gen Nintendo system.

And anyway, any time someone says "X was the worst year ever" or "X was this company's worst console" then inevitably someone says "no it's not because it had these great games!" You could do the same for 2016:
- Pokemon Sun & Moon
- Twilight Princess HD
- Fire Emblem Fates
- Kirby: Planet Robobot
- Dragon Quest 7 + 8 remakes

This list is half as long, and already padded by third party games lol. Only proving my point further.

2014 was actually the Wii U's best year!
  • Mario Kart 8
  • Super Smash Bros. 4
  • Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
  • Bayonetta 2
  • Captain Toad
  • Hyrule Warriors
Plus 3DS had a bunch of stuff:
  • Pokemon OmegaRuby/AlphaSapphire
  • Kirby Triple Deluxe
  • Tomodachi Life
I'd call that a pretty good year too

This. I would actually say that 2013 and 2014 were the last years that Nintendo was really at its peak. After that point, they fizzled, then came back with the mentality that every game they make has to be either bloated as hell, or designed for babies.

Yeah, you're right. I forgot about Mario Kart and Smash. I guess it has to be 2016 then. I honestly can't think of an alternative. Maybe 2015, but Splatoon turned out to be huge for Nintendo in the long run.

Yeah, 2015 still had Splatoon, Mario Maker, Xenoblade X, plus New 3DS with Majora's Mask 3D

2016 is really the big one. Their big game for the year was a huge flop (Star Fox Zero), and there wasn't much else.

Other than Pokemon GO and the NES Classic Mini lol

  • Mario Kart World - Dead, community prefer MK8 over MKW everyday of the week.
  • Donkey Kong Bananza - Didnt play yet.
  • Pokemon Legends ZA - Far Far from great, i had fun but i can acknowledge how bad it is.
  • Metroid Prime 4 Beyond - Worst prime game by a mile and second worst Metroid ever made by critics
  • Hyrule Warriors Age of Imprisonment - Niche game as all Musous are
  • Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 - Re-Re-Release ( amazing game )
  • Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition - not bad, not great, just a re-release.

2016 was really bad.

They were doing horribly in 2013 but there were a couple of fun games and it was the year of Luigi.. plus Satoru Iwata was still with us, that made it all better..

I recall 2008 being absolutely painful, though that may have been their E3 presentation moreso than their actual output.

They had Brawl that year, which was something.

The games released were not very good
If you're referring only to 2013, possibly.
The WiiU had several excellent games.

But their worst year was 2016, no contest.
Literally the only thing keeping Nintendo afloat that year was the E3 BOTW presentation. The year was totally barren otherwise, and even believing Nintendo had a future as a hardware maker had become a desperate act of faith.

Talk about the dictionary definition of "first world problems".
If a company being a bit overzealous about their property is among "all the horrible shit going on in the world", your understanding of human misery is as deep as a puddle.

2008 was:

  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl
  • Mario Kart Wii
  • Animal Crossing City Folk
  • Wii Fit
  • Kirby Super Star Ultra
  • Professor Layton and the Curious Village
This is definitely pretty dire, all considered, but Smash and Kart are a strong duo, and Wii Fit was fantastic for what it was and for its time, from what I have been told. I would still pick 2016 over it.

Nintendo's worst financial year on record was fiscal year 2013–2014, when they posted a historic net loss of 46.4 billion yen (~$456 million USD) the largest single-year loss in the company's history thus far. The main culprit was the Wii U, which flopped hard due to poor marketing, consumer confusion, and almost no third-party support. It was actually Nintendo's third straight year of losses, dating back to 2011 when they posted their first annual loss in three decades. The Wii U never recovered and was eventually discontinued, then the Switch happened and Nintendo rebounded stratospherically.
