When companies go out of their way to "blackinize" commercials on black stations or during black programming. Just show us a normal coke commercial. A bunch of black youths in shirts with the coke logo spliced with the african flag, doing the harlem shake isn't going to make me "relate" to the product and increase my odds of buying it. "Mama's comin..get the Bounty" wtf is that. If you're gonna have black people in commecials cool, of course i'm all for that, but is it really needed for the guy going to get a big mac say stupid shit like "Yo that big mac looks phat" "Yeah baby those fries are smokin!!"

If McDonald's execs really could make the commercials they wanted to:

"Woo-wee! We sho iz hawngry! I sho am glad massa let us out da field early enuff tuday so's we could come to Mickey Deez!

"Deez nuts!"

It's retarded to non-black people, too.

Oh god yes! I hate this! It's hard to watch BET stand up comedy because of this. =(

That makes me wonder....

What was the first example of obvious targeting of black audiences by a commercial on TV?

Was it the McDonald's ads?

I don't mind commercials that point out and display cultural differences. Black people are different than white people. That's not a problem when that's reflected to me

I don't particularly like sterotypical commericals that always display the same things over and over and neglect other parts of the culture. Blacks don't always need to be singing and dancing in commericals like life is some big musical. But on a larger scale I don't think black commericals are any more assine than white commericals. They all suck.

TV shows....Now that's a different matter sadly.

While we're on the subject...I don't watch Comic View that much anymore because its mostly the same un-original men vs women and black vs white jokes. Every now and then, you'll get someone whos hilarious, but its hard sitting through the same performances that you have for the past 10 years to get to them.

McDonalds' "black-centric" commercials always annoyed the hell out of me. It's so racist that almost all their fucking commercials feature black people and underscore how cheap their food is. Maybe I only see those commercials because I watch UPN, which has a lot of black programming, but it really seems targeted and calculated.

What commercials aren't. Every beer commercial you will ever see is the most sexist, misogynistic mini-film you can cram into 30 seconds. That's the point of advertising. Narrow cast to a defined market.

Well, adding sparkles to a series of "My Little Pony" ads isn't the same as using black people as the example beneficiaries of cheap eats at every turn.

"AND IT'S CHEAP, SO BLACK PEOPLE WILL LIKE IT, TOO!"

I don't know. I don't sense the cheap part other than the fact that they have a value menu which I see as appealing to everybody white or black. I see the "hip" cultural tie in's or the community involvement angle. Other than those aspects and the black annoucer and the aforementioned dancing/singing they roughly seem the same as their white counterparts to me.

If we're going to discuss commercials and targeting audiences, I have a question:

Why has there been a rash of commericals that make the target buyers look like complete idiots?

Granted, this Valentine holiday season, all of the commercial subtext was 'if you don't buy this, you'll look bad', but there are always commercials out there that do the opposite.

Classic example- the original Klondike bar ads.

isn't this the case in television shows, as well?

the minds behind these commercials/television shows operate from a very myopic perception of black people - from our mannerisms and speech, to the way we dress and act.

"Get yoself some crispy fresh Popayz chikun!"
"Baked right in tooda cruss"
"Badabababaaaaa......Ah'm lovin' it"
"Heeeeey sista gurl!"
"Get off ma' lawn muthafucka!"

Nah, not annoying at all.

Gotta say though, I like the commercial with the mom smelling the jersey and the other claymation one with the mama clam and the baby clam, they touched me. /sensitive

You'd just love Diddy's comedy show on HBO. :lol :lol

I think there is a big difference between commericals and television shows although I agree that there will always be some level of dissonance with any minority group and how they are perceived in a majority culture in all mediums.

Mostly due to cost and function. TV shows cost so much and on a continuing basis that they generally need to attract slightly more than a black audience so it needs to cater to what people expect even more which are sterotypes. Commercials are targeted by comparison in a more narrow manner so in theory they have no real reason to demean their audience.

That being said unfortunately my little theory doesn't explain why BET is such a lost cause....

All I know is that there seems to be an immutable universal law that there can only be one good predominantly black show on all of television at a time (Which Everybody hates Chris is currently holding down). The rest must be demeaning and insulting.

Boondocks.

I just hate when its blatant and pointless. I mean what would have been an effective commercial with a black business man driving through some beautiful deserted place while "god voice" explains the feature of the car gets botched..ANd you have some generic "hip" black guy listening to rap picking up his "boys"..One has to make some lame comment like "Yo Son..This car is tiiight!!" and the drive respond "Yeah homie this is fly, check the sound system".

I forgot about that one. I stand corrected. We are making progress. There are indeed two. :D

This post is true.

It's similar to if commercials targetted towards Asians just had Chinese guys saying "ching chong chang!" to each other. It's highly offensive, but unfortunately no one complains about it in a public setting where things can be changed. Black comedians especially reinforce these stereotypes and generalizations by implementing them in their comedy.

With these sorts of offensive black commercials, you either have white guys trying to market to black people, or black people giving white people want they think they want.

In a few years, black targeted commercials will find a niche without having to be so pandering. Just wait it out, I guess. Unfortunately, I don't think it will ever fully die out though, just as beer and burger commercials still go for horny men.

There are no black people on GAF... black people aren't smart enough to know how to access the internet, if anyone else tells you different they are a stinkin dirty black lovin liar!

I thought you guys didn't like being called "blacks"? At least, I remember seeing some threads being locked for using the term "black".

LMFAO..Unrelated Story:

I work with Medicare. So I'm helping this 80+ lady whos black out or what not, I resolve our issue and shes like "You've been a big help sugar..Iz you colored". I'm like ......... "um yes maam, I'm black" and shes like "Black!? Yeah yeah then you Colored then".

For a moment I thought she was gonna bust out singing "Wade on the Water".

Funny this thread came up, because on the way back home from college today I heard a commercial on the radio for Burger King that was just a guy dropping a dead serious rap about the new angus bacon cheddar burger. It was hilarious to me, but not nearly as hilarious as the very next commercial which was a freestyle rap battle between a Honda Civic and competing car brands. Both commercials wre completely devoid of any intentional humor, but I couldn't stop laughing.

I'm pretty sure Burger King was one of the first of the food chains to run ads regularly featuring black folk. I remember thinking, "Hmm, this isn't targeting me or the typical white America. I feel awkward and undecided in my choice of fast-food dining."

I'll bring it up at the next meeting and get clarification. :)

I don't know too many blacks who object to being referred to as black unless the tone is condescending and followed by some such phrase as "You blacks sure seem to like the Fried Chicken". As always in these things there might be a slight generational gap, however.

I prefer it myself. Not that there is anything wrong with African-American....I think black simply boils it down to the essential, isn't overly scientific, and is just quicker to say and write due to its shortness.
