I think calling people african-american is silly, why aren't white people called european-american?

Because generally White Americans can trace their ancestory to specific European countries. As in the Irish, the German, the French, etc..

Blacks do not have this luxary for the most part excepting general regions of the continent. Therefore a catch-all, "African-American", is used denoting the unique nature of how we ended up in this country.

On the scale of silly things in the world, this one doesn't seem so bad to me but of course I'm biased.

I guess that's a satisfying answer...but what about Asian-Americans? I always thought of it as, not exactly a negative thing, but as yet another way to keep us Americans separated if even on a miniscule level. It's like, ________-Americans are somehow less American than white people, who are never referred to as being from another place (even though many black, asian, etc. people have been here longer than many white people).

Well that's certainly one way to look at it and while I disagree it's not as if it's not open to debate. I always go with whatever someone wants to be called myself. Some Asian Americans I know don't like the term Asian American because they don't like all those groups lumped together. Depends on the person. Depends on the group. Just curious. What would you call Native Americans? Just Americans. Their tribal names. Their names in their native language.

I understand it's not really as bad as what I proposed in my last post, but I guess it's just food for thought. In the past I certainly did not even think twice about using the term African-American, but in the past couple years I began to question it.

I would typically prefer to call Native-Americans by their tribal name, in english, since I wouldn't even know where to begin with the native tongues. My view on this whole labels thing has evolved over time partly because of Native-American vs tribal name, I am part Cherokee myself and I remember one day I just thought it was so silly that I would refer to myself as "part Native-American".

LMFAO..Unrelated Story:

I work with Medicare. So I'm helping this 80+ lady whos black out or what not, I resolve our issue and shes like "You've been a big help sugar..Iz you colored". I'm like ......... "um yes maam, I'm black" and shes like "Black!? Yeah yeah then you Colored then".

For a moment I thought she was gonna bust out singing "Wade on the Water".

:lol :lol

Man where the hell do you guys live. I guess I'm jaded living in this melting pot called L.A.

:lol You are offended or annoyed by this??

Lets review. Your culture becomes insanely popular, allowing for a small selection of your population to become more rich than they probably deserve. This wealth allows them to set trends that are later filtered down to fans of their trends. Those trends are then continued by the fans (many black themselves) and then the trends spread further. Now you are complaining about the popularity that is somewhat self-perpetuated??? :lol Welcome to fame.

I'm not sure what I think about this analysis.

Well...maybe I think it's lacking.

I got a brown AOL CD with pictures of all black families in a brown case

I do find it annoying, but at the same time...it's the only AOL CD I haven't thrown out yet

While not exactly the most PC way to say it, I don't know that I can necessarily disagree with your larger points which is why commericals by themselves don't bother me. Black culture in its most general term is being sold to white and black citizens alike who seem to be purchasing. It's not a new phenomena and has been going on for quite a while in this country. While I might disagree with certain specifics of how it is being characterized, that is advertising which is inherently based on the notion of removing your logic circuits when you purchase something anyway. In other words the core issues are more annoying to me than any one semi-silly commerical I might see....

And with that, I'm going to bed. :)

I was just trying to lay it out as it really is without getting offensive myself. I think unless you dont agree with the culture that has been popularized to agree with, you cant really complain about others taking advantage of its popularity.

Well one more before I go to bed :)

No I hear what your saying. That's why I didn't disagree with you. It's on point and roughly the same way I feel in this instance on that subject.

Not really. I have seen plenty of commercials where caucasiouns were acting and sounding stereotyped and dumb as hell. Only recently, have I been getting aggetated----thats more to do with rap being whored out---by some of these commercials with people rapping about cars and whatnot.

As for being called black. I don't like getting called outside of my name, period. There really is no reason for anyone to call me black and or African American. I am proud of my heritage, but my parents gave me a name, for a reason.

Sure, but what I'm saying is when it's time to sell shit to people who are black, they don't mind being a little racist in their approach. Believe me, the marketing fucks they hire have a profile on every demo out there.

Side note: Church's chicken commercials are fuckin' scary, man. I feel like I'm watching Bamboozled when that shit comes on.

I'm annoyed when they have a lame/boring white guy on those commercials. OMG THANK GOD THEM BLACKS ARE KEEPING IT REAL.

I'm not black and those ads are as annoying as they are obvious. The funniest thing to me is hearing white radio jockeys ebonicize their speech on pop stations. They try so hard. :lol

When companies go out of their way to "blackinize" commercials on black stations or during black programming. Just show us a normal coke commercial. A bunch of black youths in shirts with the coke logo spliced with the african flag, doing the harlem shake isn't going to make me "relate" to the product and increase my odds of buying it. "Mama's comin..get the Bounty" wtf is that. If you're gonna have black people in commecials cool, of course i'm all for that, but is it really needed for the guy going to get a big mac say stupid shit like "Yo that big mac looks phat" "Yeah baby those fries are smokin!!"

[/rant]
I think you just attracted all teh white gaffers by mentioning black gaffers

Way to set the stereotype of loud African-Americans screaming into their phone while publicly inviting the City of Houston to hop in the conversation because we dont know where the damn "Mote Control" is and we forgot our WIC Checks so we can get formula for the baby. But you know what? I payed 179.99 for this new pimp ass camera flip phone.

Fuck you Boost.

You don't remember Calvin? McDonald's ads from the 80's. Dude is pimpin hos, drive drop tops, flashing major cash, high-fiving old folk and young alike in the hood, while working at McDonald's part-time

Haha so that's where the Chappelle skit is based off of.

"There's a thin line between fries and shakes"

WacArnold's: A take-off on the famous 1980's commercial for McDonald's with one of their first African-American characters "Calvin", a good-looking, clean-cut kid with an after school job, Calvin made the whole neighborhood proud. As he passed kids playing and old ladies on the stoop they greeted Calvin with warm smiles. Calvin was the pride of his black community – an employed teenager, a good kid, not some clown hanging on the corner.

I was born mid 80's so I had no clue. I gotta see a commercial.

Yeah, wasn't his name Calvin in the skit, too?

WTF, there's black people on GAF?!

<----

I was just talking to my brother about this yesterday. I have mixed feelings on this subject, I'll post later when I have my thoughts together.

Dont take this the wrong way but the only thing I can think of the irks the crap out of me are all these movies with some white person saving a bunch of black kids from some situation. Not to say that all of those movies are bad, or a white guy can't be helpful. :lol It falls in line too much with the absent black father stigma which is a very real issue.

My following issue is with my own people who are stereotyped into a box. I have a problem because they help by taping the box shut. Why can't blacks make spy movies, thrillers, action movies or mysteries? Its always a brown sugar, or a love and basketball. We definately need to become more diverse so that when we are portrayed it can be in a better light. To my black directors, "black" movies dont always need 99% black casts for us to support you.

As far as how the media portrays us, its a double edged sword. We're partly responsible but I believe they're mostly responsible. The worst of our people are almost aways celebrated by the media! When you look at the daily news they find the most illerate and unkept black person they can find to speak on a subject. Morons like Flava-Flav are given airtime over something enriching. I dont know how I truely feel about it yet but I feel that everything is done for a reason and a lot is subliminal. "People" know that whats on TV is usually going to catch on. They want people to celebrate whats on TV and to embrace it. They dont realize that what they're mocking and becoming like is not the right thing...

I dunno, its early and too much to think about.
