Best rain levels....

Definitely the one and only time I can remember the rain distinctly. Other times the rain in games is just there.

I'm really sensitive to repetitiveness and it really stands out in PGR 4 windshield animation. Yeah effects are low res in GT 5 but are dynamic and they even simulate drops grass and dirt on windshield. PGR 4 also dont have many particles that gets out from wheels and reflections on road, there's not many raid drops in visible in atmospherics as well. So maybe it looks ok, but definitely dont look amazing and especially natural.

I love GT5, but I don't understand how you can be more sensitive to PGR4's repetitive rain drop animation over GT5's (http://www.abload.de/img/egegaden.jpg) weird looking rain drops. I find those low-res effects much more distracting, and imo this (http://www.abload.de/img/b1aa8f13-de1b-424b-9eayeyl.jpg) is much more natural and appealing to look at.

Add to that, the low res alpha particles (http://images.eurogamer.net/assets/articles//a/1/3/0/4/5/7/0/Dodgy_Alpha1.jpg.jpg) makes everything look jaggy, including your windshield wipers. It's very jarring to look at, to the point where I don't even care if the effects are dynamic anymore. Everything comes at a cost, and I'll gladly take PGR4's way of handling rain effects over GT5.

And PGR4 does have road reflections. GT5 is the game missing road reflections (http://images.lazygamer.net/2010/11/GTMonza.jpg) outside of the SSR7 night stage.

Here's PGR4's wet pavement.

I think GT5 can look pretty amazing at times, but the rain effects aren't really its strong points, whereas they look pretty realistic to me whenever I play PGR4.

That's because the weather is are dynamic. The reflections would have to be as well and all that stuff is prebaked, not easy to do a real time transition.

I know. I just wanted to point it out because KKRT is speaking as if PGR4 doesn't have wet road surfaces, and even if it didn't, somehow it's not a problem in GT5?

EDIT - PGR4's weather is dynamic too. I recall one of the main race events where the road was dry and by the end of the race the street was wet and there were puddles everywhere.

Darn. Everything I was going to mention (that KOF stage, Wind Waker, Majora's Mask) has already been mentioned...

But speaking of Wind Waker, how exactly is the rain programmed? I've been playing it recently, and I love how real it feels...like, it doesn't just rain for a long time or at any specific time, but is sporadic and seems to hover over areas before passing on, like in real life. I dunno, but I just love it and am interested if there's some pattern it follows.

Anyway, the Pikmin level of Smash Brothers Brawl looks pretty cool when it rains...but I forgot, does it ever actually rain in the real Pikmin game?

I always love particularly games with a rainy ambience. It gives a lot of atmosphere to the gameplay experience.

Max Payne is probably my favorite, but there are lots of other games which I enjoy when the rain starts falling over. The Uncharted levels have an heavier atmosphere, for example. They're actually pretty good.

Even in real life I love opening the window and seeing the rain outside or even go walk with the rain falling. How I love it.

Someone already mentioned it, but I love when it rains in Animal Crossing. Any time I get nostalgic for the game and get the itch to play it again, it's because I'm thinking about the times when it rains. I love when it rains during the summer and the sun is still out. I love that in real life too, so seeing it in a game is cool. The music helps too.

Yeah, I don't think many games do that...I think the Wind Waker does it occasionally, but usually in it and most games it always goes really dark and then rains.

That being said...you like summer rain? That's the worst. It feels horrible when it's sunny outside and it rains because the rain STINGS, and then it gets humid as hell afterwards. :(

I like the way it looks mostly. In Washington this happens fairly often. Doesn't sting, and usually isn't too warm. It feels kind of nice actually.

I remember Donkey Kong Country having a nice rain level or two in the second area.

Rain in games is awesome, usually only adds to the atmosphere.

Said this about the PGR4 gif and I'll say it again....beautiful. Glad I picked it up again a few weeks ago.

yes it is beautiful,I like how the car's paint color is reflected in the raindrops on the windshield.

The Downpour level in Gears of War 1 looks absolutely fantastic and was my first "wow" moment when I got my HDTV.

lmao, best rain goes to the Witcher 2 by far. I have never seen such beautiful rain, specially when you are running in the forest, will take a screenie when i get the chance to start it up again

Witcher 2 and Uncharted 2 are both great.

People mentioned the level near the end in Uncharted 2, but I also like the part in the middle where you exit the temple and have to carry Elena's camera man.

Another vote for Left 4 Dead 2 with Hard Rain. The progression of the storm from the start of the level from drizzle to full-on crazy storm was wonderful, and the practical effects (tougher to see and hear teammates AI, voice chat is muffled, the roar of the wind and the falling rain make zombies and teammates tough to spot until too late) are incredible. The best aspect is that the AI Director will intensify the storm to make things more difficult, which is awesome. The first time I went through it with full 5.1 and maxed-out graphics I was stunned.

Stalker: Call Of Pripyat with the Complete mod.
It was a storm in the town itself that finally made me turn the music off and just listen to the rain. I got involved in a long-range sniper firefight during a thunderstorm and the way the sound of the rain would swell back up after the crack of every sniper shot was incredible. One of my most memorable gaming moments this year.

I can't find a single good picture on my steam account, though, so either Stalker's rain only looks good in motion or I suck at taking screenshots.
