I guess it all boils down to whether you liked the last game or not really. Shattered Memories is hugely polarizing stuff, and seems to generate extreme opinions for the most part. I'm firmly in the camp that loved it so I don't feel like my hype for Downpour is misplaced. Plus...rain! Lots of it!

Coincidentally enough, in accordance with your avatar, my second most anticipated release of the year is Max Payne 3. In all likelihood, that supposed December date isn't very credible, but fingers crossed.
Shattered Memories was awesome. Mostly for the story though and not the gameplay. Too bad Climax is not developing Downpour.

And there's no way Max Payne 3 is going to make it this year :(

I'll just keep listening to this until then...

Far Cry 2, I love the other ambient sounds too.

and of course, when you first land in Metroid Prime (can't find a good video).

EDIT: and with that, I'm stuck listening to Metroid Prime music on Youtube again.

Not a level, but the best use of rain I've seen is near the end of ICO, just after
you lose yorda

Completely suits the mood, and adds to the emotion. Don't think I'd ever experienced anything like that in a videogame before.

MegaMan ZX: Area I The music plays a big part in this, the combo of traditional piano+rock guitars always gets me.

And speaking of Yakuza 4, there doesn't seem to be a way to select rainy weather in Premium Adventure, that has actually kept me from trying to complete the game.

The best part of the storms in RDR aren't just the effects but the build, and just how LONG they are. That vid is 9 minutes, but if it showed 5-10 minutes beforehand, the sky would looked very much like it would before a storm in real life. It's gray and moody, and unless you save to advance time, you can expect 15-20 minutes of weather like that through the storm, and afterwards with puddles on the ground. Those are the type of details that most games with day/night/weather cycles don't pay attention to.

I remember being at the train station near the farmhouse ( I like taking train tours around the area and you could literally see the clouds roll in just like the would in real life, slight thunder in the distance. When it got overhead and opened up it felt natural. Its too bad there's no severe wind or tornadoes in RDR. Of course if there were, people would want them to fuck up towns and whatever else. I just think it would be cool to see one coming down the prairie.

stalker, anywhere: pitch-black midnight gun battles in abandoned warehouses with dynamic wet surfaces and global radiosity lightning, so good.
You SOB, took my answer. ;)

That rain stuck with me. Also, +1 to Max Payne 2.

Tallon Overworld in Metroid Prime for me, preferably with the second theme for added awesome.

Ropey Rampage which was the second level in DKC just for the way the sky darkened at the end of the first level to lead into the second level and it's night time rainfall and following that the end of Ropey rampage has the skies clear up. The rain itself on the other hand doesn't look that great.

Rain is always enjoyable, agreeing with the "watering my crops for me" crowd on Harvest Moon as well. Any game with the potential for random rainfall has me hyped for the potential weather effects, from GTA3 to Twilight Princess (where the rain is so rare i've only experienced two storms, that's aside from the set one in the middle of the game when Midna gets injured)

Omgosh, I looove rain levels!! They're the best. Definitely, what stood out to me the most was the rain level from Gears of War 1. It was amazing.

I also remember the beginning of MGS2 where it was raining as well.

Red Dead Redemption and probably Crysis 2.

I agree with this guy entirely.

The reflections in Crysis 2 were insane. In RDR, if you tilted the camera up, more rain drops would fall onto the camera. It's such a subtle effect, but it really added to the realness of the gameworld. I loved it.

RDR and Hot Pursuit have godly storms. RDR is the only game I can recall where I was thinking, 'holy shit this weather is insane. i can't even see anything'

Final Fantasy IX -Burmecia
That was fantastic. Saying the word Burmecia flooded a bunch of images back in my head!
But yeah, my first OMFGBBQRAIN moment was MGS2 tanker. Also, I really enjoy rain in the metroid series, definitely adds alot to the atmosphere.

Beautiful.
Indeed. Makes me think about what PD could achieve with a 30fps renderer.

MGS2 is the clear winner of the thread. The tanker section still looks superb today. Perfect colour palette.

The Crysis 2 rain levels really did feel desolate and scary.

Do You mean repeated animation on windshield, shaders that arent visible from inside of cars and lack of reflections on the road?

Except water drop shaders on a cars, i dont get, what is so good about PGR 4 weather effects.

About topic i remember that Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway had nice rain effects and shaders and there was resident evil 4 like game on hunted ship with good effects.

Gears of War is still my favorite.

THIS.

You had me at MGS2. And then this post reminded me of how literally PERFECT Gears 1&2's rain was.

Modern Warfare 2's rain while in Washington DC was amazing as well.

If you placed the camera to the side of the driver so it wasn't first person, added a little camera shake and removed the HUD, that gif could pass as video footage. You could argue the same for a number of GT5 gifs too, but the fact is, PD was limited by their need for 60fps and the rain effects didn't hold up well in person. And the jaggies on the shadows and smoke effects would have been much less of a problem.

PGR4 has very natural weather effects - there's no way Bizarre could have created them in a 60fps game.

Because when you're playing the game it looks fantastic, shaders or no shaders...

To me, the great parts about rain levels is how well the ambience of rain is conveyed. I thought Red Dead Redemption is an example of this:

The rain levels on RDR ruined a great song for me:

You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name,
It felt good to be out of the rain.
