What game had your favorite stealth gameplay?

Elements of stealth have slowly encroached upon numerous genres since Metal Gear introduced the concept to the gaming world. More often than not, stealth being shoehorned into an action/adventure game where it is not expected (or needed) is met with a negative response from players. This is probably because stealth gameplay is very difficult to design, and entire levels need to be structured from the ground-up to accommodate this unique style of play. Think of the stealth segments in Beyond Good & Evil or the occasional one in San Andreas. Both are great action/adventure games, but I don't think anyone here would have missed the stealth sections if they were taken out. You can tell right away in those games that the core gameplay design wasn't really suited for stealth.

On the other hand you have stealth games that were designed from the beginning to focus primarily on sneaking and quietly assassinating rather than running and gunning. Series like Metal Gear, Splinter Cell, Hitman, and Thief have carried the torch for the stealth genre for the last 15 years or so, each with their own unique spin on this type of gameplay. Since all of the different stealth series have their own methodology and approaches to this singular theme, gamers often have a distinct preference for one game or series above the rest. I made this thread because I'm curious as to which brand of stealth my fellow GAFers think is best.

Just to clarify, I want to know which individual game has your favorite stealth gameplay. If you have a favorite stealth series, pick the entry that you felt had the best sneakin'.

My Vote: Deus Ex: Human Revolution

I'm sure Metal Gear will get the lion's share of votes in this thread, but I'm gonna have to tip my hat to Eidos Montreal for their exemplary stealth gameplay in Deus Ex: HR. This game really took me by surprise with its approach to stealth. While one could play through the game with guns blazing the whole way through, the level design has clearly been optimized for a stealthy approach. The way the levels give the player multiple paths around modular areas with varied and believable guard placement is something that other developers should take note of when trying to implement stealth in their games.

It'd probably be more efficient for me to just make a bulleted list of the reasons why I chose Deus Ex: HR as my favorite stealth game:

  • XP Bonuses give the player added incentive to sneak
  • Level design is fantastic with tons of opportunities to sneak and silently eliminate guards and/or security droids
  • Guard AI and behavior is just dynamic enough to provide a challenge while still being regimented and predictable enough for the player to be able to plan an attack.
  • The game gives you tons of cool weapons and gadgets with which you can silently dispatch guards (silencers, stun gun, tranq gun... etc.).
  • The Augmentation system allows players to custom tailor their Adam Jensen to suit their sneaking style. Want silent footsteps and a cloaking device? How about an enhanced stealth radar UI? Everything's just a Praxis Point away.
  • The game allows true stealth in that you can navigate your way through the entire game without killing a single guard. Metal Gear Solid 2 was the first to grant the player this sort of freedom, and HR carries the torch nicely.
  • If you do decide end some lives, the lethal takedowns are fun and satisfying every time.
  • Hacking to disable cameras and turn turrets on enemies is just plain awesome and is a perfect example of HR's hacking and stealth gameplay systems converging.
  • This never gets old:

Human Revolution just knocked it out of the park for me with its stealth gameplay, but here are some honorable mentions that trail closely behind:

  • Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence
  • Hitman 2
  • Batman: Arkham Asylum

All three of those games make you feel like an invisible assassin while offering the player a slew of tools and approaches for every situation. I look forward to hearing everyone's favorites.

i'm not saying its the best stealth play, but i really liked what they did in uncharted 2 because it smelt so smooth and natural in it.

PERFECT to me. All the gadgets and equipment you have, but it is still real and raw. Not sprinkled on with fancy finishing moves.

I just got Thief II based on recommendations on gaf, looking forward to it.

Although the AI isn't that great I think the Thief series has some of the funniest mechanics to work with. Moss arrows to shoot on the ground to make your walking silent, water arrows to splash on torches and the rope arrow to traverse the environment are all really fun to improvise with. Hopefully Eidos Montreal will keep these mechanics for the 4th game (even though the rope arrow didn't work with the engine they used for thief 3).

Thief 1 & 2

Can't beat them. Large and beautifully designed levels, very little player direction, strong mechanics.

At this point, I would say Deus Ex: Human Revolution as well. MGS2 and 4 would be my preference after that (there were too many factors in MGS3's gameplay that annoyed me).

Just wanted to throw the first Tenchu game out there, because, while it may not have been the best, I had an absolute blast with it.

Yep. Exactly what I was going to say.

You could stealth almost every encounter, and it was very fun, badass, and non-frustrating.

Batman AA too.

I also really enjoyed Splinter Cell Conviction, the mark and execute mechanic was tons of fun.

Dues Ex was great too. Dat ability tree.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
No game can ever surpass Snakes' part in MGS2. Ever.

Say what now? Although, I am struggling to think of earlier examples...

Anyway, Tenchu the first was my favourite stealth game back in the day, so racist, so busted, so exploitable, and so bloody. Everything a growing boy needed.

Probably Hitman : Blood money. I also enjoyed deus ex HR and the metal gear stealth a lot but I just love the whole killing everything making it look like accident and hiding in plain sight that hitman is/was known for.

The Commandos franchise is still my favourite series of stealth/strategy games. Carefully navigating between the cones of visions of the nazi guards, setting up traps to take out a particular enemy, timing your units' actions with pinpoint accuracy to achieve an objective, getting your hands on an enemy general's outfit and sneaking through the map as the Spy, sniping a top dog from a roof on the other side of the map as the Sniper, (non-lethally) clearing out an entire train as the Green Beret... So good when a plan comes together.

The final game in the Splinter Cell series, Chaos Theory.

Special mention goes to the stealth sections of Beyond Good & Evil (simple but a lot of fun), and the seamless integration of stealth kills in Uncharted 2.

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory has yet to be topped in terms of pure stealth. Absolute brilliance. Deus Ex HR is definitely the game that has come the closest to replicating CTs stealth other than the inferior Double Agent.

my favorite stealth play was a stealth playthrough of fallout 3, especially if you get the chinese stealth suit and the dart gun.

I also liked the stealth in Wind Waker

I was hoping somebody would say Commandos. What a great franchise.

sadly stealth nowadays seems to mean "wait in cover until you're told to press the 'A'wesome button"

No game has ever given me the endless hours of fun that being a rogue in World of Warcraft did on a PVP server.

Nothing comes close.

I'll never grow tired of Chaos Theory. What's most impressive to me is how well the game nailed single player and multiplayer (both co-op and spies vs mercs). I consider the game to be a masterpiece.

I'd also vote for Deus ex: HR. It might not have the most refined system but it was the game I simply had the most fun with.

I do not avoid women, GAF, but I do deny them my essence.
Chaos Theory probably has the best...

but most fun?

Crysis and Hitman: Blood Money. You could be far more creative.

I'd go with Death to Spies: Moment of Truth, Hitman Contracts (I love Blood Money, but Contracts seemed to resonate with me more, even with those rehashed levels), Commandos 3 (a bit of a travesty I suppose, in the face of Commandos 2...but the entire series bar the FPS are great) and Thief 2: The Metal Age.

The first Commandos games. Beyond the Call of Duty was damn tough, but still fun. Commandos 2 became too complicated, but at least they remembered to put stealth in the game, unlike Commandos 3.

I also really liked Desperados (and sequels) and Robin Hood. They don't make 'em like they used to.

Oh, and Viking: Battle For Asgard. Most people didn't play it as a stealth game, but you could. And if you did, it was bad ass.

Deus Ex HR. Outta all the stealth games out there, this was the only one I genuinely wanted to play steathily throughout. Fun fun.
