My main source of american news is stuff canada re-airs, or stuff i read about here on gaf. Everything related to gun violence is always negative, where some crazy decides to rob a place, or shoot up a mall, or whatever.

I can't recall any instances where some random bystander who happened to have a gun on him used it effectively to defuse a situation. This seems to anecdotally prove that people saying they need guns for 'protection' is a bad excuse.

thoughts?

i once shot a black guy cuz he was wearing a bball jersey and he had tats and he was walking at me funny...it turns out he wanted to borrow my phone to call a cab (he dropped his in a puddle...)..he didnt die or anything lol...but id say thats a good case for needing guns..if he had a knife he could have killed me and my family instead of needing my phone..!

American news media wouldn't report it. Nobody died? Boring, that's not going to bring in any viewers for commercials.

I think its because most likely they are trained to not pull out their firearm out of fear they can escalate the situation.

i meant more like why dont gun rights champions on these boards ever post stories where guns saved lives
Crimes where the victim or an involved bystander has a carried gun is probably rare compared to the times when they aren't carrying a lethal weapon.

This was a pretty obvious satire.

I read somewhere you are more likely to be struck by lightning than defending your home with a handgun?

edit: base on the link by pj, that statistic is true then. About 1000 people get struck by lightning each year in the US according to the NLSI

because 95% of gaffers are left leaning people who don't make thread that contradict their political views, especially on a subject where it rarely happens enough that anyone would notice when it actually does happen?

These topics (gun control in general) because:

1. People strongly believe one way or the other.
2. There's no concrete scientific data.
3. Confirmation bias

Stairs is a joke character who has only ever posted obnoxious troll posts to rile people up. No loss to the forum.

He'll be back and at it again soon enough, I'm sure.

All you have to do is a Google search and you can find research and articles on defensive handgun use. Lack of threads about it on a message board is as anecdotal as many articles on gun crime, but there are examples.

I want to hear stories about stray bullets ricocheting off walls and doors, and somehow freeing a person from a terrible ordeal. Some guy's tie gets caught in some kind of machine or something and a stray bullet frees him.

Anything involving the need for legally carrying guns is like winning a very sucky lottery. Sure it could happen...

Because it almost never happens. Rural America's obsession with carrying guns stems from their paranoia they're going to be overrun by Commies (now Muslims) or street gangs or liberals or something and they'll need to defend their families and homes.

But at the same time, this is why I'm a big supporter of State's Rights. They can carry their guns to the supermarket and the bar and the football game in their fly-over states and I can choose to not live in them, which I've already been doing my adult life.

He's been doing that for his last few points, trolling without any semblance of subtlety

Umm no.

This is more an example of urban America being out of touch with rural America and making assumptions based on stereotypes.

Really? Because that's all I hear from NRA rallies and other pro-gun voices, "the ability to protect ourselves and our families." Why else would you possibly want to carry or own a handgun?

Sadly, the positive side of concealed carrying is hardly ever accounted for in the media, which out way the negatives ten fold. Do we think life is a fairy tale and you'll never need to defend your life or the life of another? Actually the chances are real good that you will, its not like it'll happen to you every other week, but then again, it only takes one time, one time and you'll be changing your opinion in an instant. I've known a decent amount of people who've changed their opinion on this issue with the quickness.

Target shooting, hunting,or livestock control, among others.
