How many memorable locations are there, anyways? The entire Naruto world is covered in generic forests in the same way the entire Bleach world is covered in flat black or white and the same way the entire One Piece world is now covered in ten billion random things designed to cause your eyes to explode.

there are quite a lot of memorable location imo, there's
Valley of The End
Uchiha clan ground (Sasuke vs Itachi)
Hidden Rain Village (Jiraiya vs Nagato)

although I don't think the location have anything to do with how good the battle will be. Naruto vs Gaara is an awesome fight and that also takes place in generic forest.

Kishi even has assistant specifically on the job to draw trees and such. That's how much he invested in his forest thing, hahaha.

For Naruto, Callibretto pretty much mentioned a few good examples already:

I think in Bleach the fights inside Soul Society were pretty okay, setting-wise, as far as Bleach goes. I don't remember any specific locations outside of Soul Society though.

As for One Piece, I think it has a lot of memorable locations, and for anyone who likes the more rich and zany style Oda uses, it's easily the best.

I really wouldn't say the scenery is so bad it makes your eyes explode, though I figure you fully know that already.
To me you're a bigger "troll" than both DTL and Big One combined, after all.

although I don't think the location have anything to do with how good the battle will be. Naruto vs Gaara is an awesome fight and that also takes place in generic forest.

I think the first Naruto vs Gaara fight in a forest was perfectly fine, in fact, I think a lot of forest fights in Naruto were pretty good.
My problem isn't necessarily with a forest fight itself, it's more the diversity an author allows himself to have in his work.
My problem with Naruto's backgrounds at the moment largely relates to how much I expect the author to be capable of.

If we had a fight in a generic forest in Bleach? It'd be the most amazing thing ever, largely because during most fights we'll be happy if we even get to see a bunch of rooftops, if anything.
In Naruto however, as you've mentioned, we've had a few real solid locations in the past, you mentioned a few of the best ones, but even that cool bridge where Danzou and Sasuke had a battle was interesting looking.

But this has been a huge gripe of me during this entire war, the number of fights going on has reduced the level of background detail and originality significantly. We pretty much get forest fights and wasteland fights, that's it.

And, as much as I dislike Big One's posting still, I'll have to agree with him that the choice for a forest fight seems largely dependant on the logistics of cool poses.

Naruto characters generally can't fly like a DBZ or Bleach character, so instead of flying they can hang around in tree tops and do cool jumping poses.

This might be fully satisfactory for someone like DTL who
rather than being a troll, which he is not
just loves himself some fast paced action with lots of cool poses and flashing light.
I don't read shonen battles "for" the action, I like battles that are meaningful, well set up or extremely memorable in execution.

Bleach recently managed to outdo almost every single Naruto War-battle with Byakuya versus Tsukichima because it actually made me wonder how Byakuya would beat a person with such a power.

The background in that scene wasn't necessarily memorable, they were just hanging around a bunch of white blocks.
But the more minimalistic rather black & white style of background works for the scene. It's a simple 1 on 1 battle between two guys with black hair, pale complexion and black and white clothes. Why shouldn't they fight in a spot filled with white blocks, in the black of night with a white moon shining on them? Seems fitting. (Bleach loves it's blacks and whites, heheheh.)

My big gripe with the current Naruto battle taking place in some random forest honestly relates mostly to the significance of the battle.
It's Naruto and Killer Bee versus the big bad and a dozen of ultra-zombies that combine every single hax power in the Narutoverse in one.
There is not a single aspect of this battle that makes me feel "Hm...let's slap a generic forest on this and call it a day."
Now I expect the reason for this to actually be the fact that this fight won't be any sort of end-game fight at all, which is obvious.
The emphasis on removing Tobi's mask makes me feel like the battle might end the moment they succeed at this, or the moment that they fail horribly and Killer B somehow ends up being captured.

Either way, this is just mostly my opinion, but I hope it explains why I, personally, really don't find the start of this battle as satisfying as it should be. To me setting and feel matter, a lot.

He doesn't have Fullbring, although I'm fairly confident he'll get it back at some point unless this whole arc was meaningless.

The entire purpose of Bleach is posing and warping behind people.

You forget cutting off arms. That's huge. Of course, chopping them in the pec's usually what decides a fight, but the arm (especially Ishida's) needs to go.

Bleach

Watching ichigo get mindfucked with a new revelation that blow his mind is always great.

1+ respect point earned for using a call back that actually happened and not just making shit up like kishi did with sasuke saving Karin from a bear.

Naruto

Fake madara is finally here just another 150 chapters till we get to see his face.

Now bring on The Sauce already

If only Index was amusing as this.

Tasogare Otome 28
Although nothing really progressed, it still had that melancholy tone. More of a buildup chapter for what's to come.

The 3rd hokage. He actually didn't die. It was all a front to put off Kakashi who was growing suspicious.

Naruto

is it so much to ask for Naruto to be strong? he had one moment against Pain and it was the best part of the post-timeskip series. he's finally united with kyubi, which had been built up since the beginning of the series, and the results are lame. anyone higher than a scrub zombie acts stronger.

this chapter was Naruto at full force. no clones and strictly focused on this one fight. just have him take out these hack'd zombies in like two seconds. instead he's tossed around, helped by Bee, hurts his shoulder; probably gonna hyperventilate soon. because now when Tobi and Sasuke are stronger, it won't be special. showcase Naruto's strength to give some context to the action.

next chapter needs to be:
Naruto "I'm gonna use my tail beast rasen yellow flash nuke attack!"
Bee "Good Naruto, you look kind of cool"

but geez, now there is this whole fight with hack'd zombies. plus the real madara vs kage fight. plus Itachi vs Kabuto. plus Sasuke vs HIS INNER DEMONS.

Bleach

Well, that was unexpected...really interested to see what happens next. What did Urahara and Isshin know and why didn't they tell Ichigo - particularly Isshin? Kinda hate Ukitake now. That's shady as hell. Ichigo vs. SS was arguably the peak of Bleach, maybe we can get a second round now.

One Piece
Sea Kings speaking in a very civilised and educated manner is strange, but I've often wondered exactly what they are and if something 'happened' to the One Piece world to make the Grand Line so fucked up, that void history and the truth.

Naruto
This battle is really boring and hard to follow.

Bleach
Oh of course Urahara already knows all the truth. As does his dad. Ichigo just didn't need to know until this moment right? Right guys? You're not holding out any more really fucking important information are you? ARE YOU?!

At least this ass-pull was woven into an actual past panel as others have said.

Then by definition it's not an Ass Pull

It could be a Bakuman-style asspull where the author reread old chapters to look for unintentional hints!

I think most authors do that which is not a problem .
The problems comes from them working it back into the story .
Even if was a ass pull is was not bad by any means.

good stuff lol .

One Piece 647:

At least Robin got a funny one liner. Now that the male power showcase is over, what's left before we move on to the next arc?

-) Feast/party celebrating Luffy and co. and the tearful goodbyes
-) The importance of Noah
-) Luffy accidentally destroying Fishman Island in some comical fashion and/or a different meaning behind the Fishman Island destruction prediction.
-) Clayface Caribou getting one shotted.
-) The source of the steroids (maybe?)
-) Fishman character story conclusions (Jinbe, The Royal family, etc...)
-) Random cameo from someone important leading into the next story (Big Mom/a famous marine/etc...)

Bleach

I can buy this whole thing being orchestrated by Ukitake, I just... don't think it's that big a deal tbh. Just meh? So what if he was being monitored and his power suppressed? It's not like anyone important to Ichigo has ever died cause he wasn't powerful enough to defeat his enemies. It does make you wonder just how powerful he would be without the badge.

I would be pissed at Ukitake but it wouldn't cause me to completely re-evaluate my friends and enemies. It certainly doesn't, with this set of revelations anyway, make Ukitake to be a villain.

Naruto

Ok chapter I guess, very little progression besides a bit of fighting.

I do love how any series with chakra (or reiatsu in Bleach for another example) will completely throw out the concept of a limited pool of energy until it's convenient for the story. Naruto should not be able to fight anymore, he needed time to recover after using too many clones, but nope he's fine now cause Kishi says so. So glad One Piece doesn't have this problem.

Speaking of which One Piece

Decent chapter I guess, glad for this to finally be over, though it did have a few awesome chapters, and I have loved that Hody was simply evil and crazy, nothing else to it.

I'm fine with the cheesiness as it fits with Shirahoshi's powers as described before, her emotions have always been linked to her ability to control sea kings. I didn't realise the sea kings were considered so intelligent though, and that does seem slightly odd considered they have always been shown as fairly instinctual and mindless creatures in the past. Having said that Chopper has spoken to mindless creatures before as if they were intelligent so maybe it's just a quirk of animals in One Piece or something.

Good ones TacticalFox88. But they can never be hakf as good as the Tsukishima´s meme.

Bleach

Watching ichigo get mindfucked with a new revelation that blow his mind is always great.

Fixed.

One piece

Sigh, One Piece just hasn't been the same ever since the time skip.
The new designs are shit, the sudden number of extra abilities (and they way they've seemingly shown them all off, at least for Luffy) is a bit lame (elephant themed haki attacks sigh...) and this latest arc has been pretty boring.

The new designs/personality changes is the biggest offender, I still can't get over how lame they all look and act.

You may not like stuff since the time skip which is no problem but stuff is mostly the same.
The Elephant attack is name after a gun just like all of luffy attacks.
All the SH act the same way plus you expect them to have new stuff after a time skip and the way they show them of is normal .

Naruto
This chapter wasn't bad, but I'm not really feeling the fight. It looks like things will improve next chapter, though.

One Piece

I guess I'm the only one who liked it.

Not at all. It was a bit predictable as far as singular chapters go, but I really dug it. I am really surprised about how the sea kings spoke so fluently together.

I just want to know how luffy is supposed to destroy the island. I think kreed has the right idea about it most likely being normal comical luffy.

Elephant gun is a type of gun which is in line with the theme for all of Luffy's attacks.

The only character who's changed personality wise post timeskip is Ussop, well I say that but it looks like he's pushing through his fears, a.k.a Sogeking without the mask.

And its about damn time too. That sogeking shtick was really starting to wear on me.

Luffy's newest attacks seem to be named after animals (elephant gun, red hawk), which may be due to him hanging out on Monster Animal Island for his training duration.

Don't see how any of them have changed personality. Chopper is more confident, as is Ussop, but other than that they're the same ol' loveable Strawhats.

I think Oda was stuck in a catch 22 with Fishman Island. He wanted to do a 'Strawhats swiftly worf everyone' arc, but also had this place that'd been built up the entire series pretty much, and with lots of important political stuff to be flashback'd about. Thats the problem with how some people perceive One Piece. Sure its shounen action, but unlike the other big three, it focusses a hell of a lot on world building. The world of One Piece is so fleshed out with its nations, politics and stuff going on everywhere whilst Naruto and Bleach occur in a vacuum around the main characters.

The New World is the real second half, fresh start, so really looking forward to that.

I guess I just didn't find the big reveal in Air Gear to change much in the tone of the story and direction, splitting the world in two, since everything always seemed written as a way to have Ikki show off how much cooler and better than anyone else he is (and with a bigger dick too, since he has enough big boobed ladies swooning for him) and it mostly stayed that way, at least up to volume 30 (so chapter 286) which is where I'm at (since I don't follow scanlations for it)..
The big reveals are typically planned unless the mangka is a nut. The problem is when the original narrative arcs are basically thrown aside like "now that that is over..." Allusion shouldn't build up to a radical departure making the previous storytelling moot and making the previous tension wasteful. It should resolve questions while maintaining the integrity of the past. Air Gear has a dreadful implementation of that and it really is a foundation for a well told story.

TLDR; it's sort of like splitting a manga into two. You can bridge the gap by using only one chapter of back-story and not skip a beat. That is the sign of a transitional failure between narratives.
Actually most of the good battle related stuff from Ichigo came from his hollow's involvement.
This man gets it. By far the best.
Guys, recommend me dark depressing mangas, please. Stuff like Elfen Lied or Mirai Nikki or Claymore.
Are you going to listen to Linkin Park while reading them?

Lunar Legend Tsukihime (especially), Chrno Crusade, Kure-nai, and Hekikai no AiON for action. Non-action would be Bitter Virgin, Tasogare, and Iris Zero. Some of them have lightheartedness but the back-stories are debby downers.

------------------

It's fun hearing the praise for Bleach's re-use of the badge in the story but complete non-mentions of the character reactions from it. Really rose-colored.
Edit: whoa, I missed like 200 posts of Big Three arguing? Goddamnit, Thanksgiving preparations!
You've seen it before. Same characters, same setting, same story. Just like Bakuman.

One Piece

Cheesy? Yes. Enjoyable? Yes. Do I think people are overreacting to the timeskip because of bad timeskips in the past? Yes.

I fail to see how anything int hat Bleach chapter is a surprise or how it should change anything for that matter, this is the mehest 'twist' I have ever seen.
