The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has, for the first time, addressed the use of artificial intelligence in performances and scripts for the 2027 Academy Awards.
While the new rules state that "the tools neither help nor harm the chances of achieving a nomination" and that each branch "will judge the achievement, taking into account the degree to which a human was at the heart of the creative authorship when choosing which movie to award," the Academy are reserving the right to request more information from the filmmaking team about the nature of the use of AI and "human authorship."

"Humans have to be at the center of the creative process," said Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor. "As AI continues to evolve, our conversations around AI will do so along with that. But for the academy, we are always going to put human authorship at the center of our awards eligibility process."

When it comes to the eligibility of performances, only roles "demonstrably performed by humans with their consent" will be considered.

Additionally, the academy revised its longstanding policy that the category of Best International Feature only consider one film per country or region, as determined by a local academy-approved selection committee. From now on, a non-English language film can qualify by winning the top prize at one of several major film festivals, including Berlin, Busan, Cannes, Sundance, Toronto and Venice. A single country can now also have more than one film nominated in the category, and all the international films will be credited as the nominee, not the country or region.

I mean, I can get behind the decision, but good luck actually enforcing it.

Uh oh... they worried about the competition.

Considering the wank people make with AI, it shows you how extra shit hollyweird is at the moment.

At least we got project hail mary though, a diamond in the rough

Reminiscent of, "AI is so bad people demand to be notified that it is AI so they can call it "slop"."

Hollywood and their emotional arguments. They don't even have an argument, just fear and hatred for this computer program that we invented that is absolutely going to replace any entertainment output that is arbitrary. Every creator should be using AI to superpower their God given talents. Ironically the first studio unafraid of fully embracing AI will get all that money.

Right now that's going to be Epic Games and China. Industry, don't cede this technology because of your own emotions over the need for human art in a post AI world. Go where the money is. Your games will be better and your audience will be happier. I'll be frank, indies should be embracing AI the most. There has never been a better time for an indie dev to try their hand at a full scale videogame because of AI.

So which is it Hollywood? Is AI slop or is AI so good you need to be protected from it by taking it off the ballot that only your own members vote on.

Someone is gonna throw up a film with a bunch of AI generated POC/disabled/LGBTBBQ 'actors' and the Oscars are gonna have a "divide by zero" moment and self-implode.

I don't care to watch the awards show, and certainly the wokeism has devalued them in recent years, but I still think there is some value to the idea of awards in general. I like seeing human achievement recognized and highlighted.

For that reason, I think AI should be disqualified in all of these type awards. Music, film, literature, visual arts, performing arts, scientific achievement like the Nobel, etc.

How would they even know?

If its going by vibes, I almost guarantee that Oz Perkins used AI to write Longlegs, at least in terms of planning and outline.

It reads like what an AI would spit out if you say you want to make a movie that combines Silence of the Lambs, Annabelle, X-Files, etc.

Imagine how bad it is when they have to officially forbid AI scripts. It means this has become the norm, which explains the pathetic level of writing of movies, TV shows and videogames.

Anyway, this prohibition is worthless if they don't remove the censorship and the mandatory rules of production. AI is the direct consequence of those.
