The PlayStation Vita In 2011-2012

coolio, any objections to me throwing whatever vids/thoughts up into your thread?

I'm trying not to buy a stupid number of games but...

On launch day here in Japan I'll be doing an all day Livestream on Twitch.tv, Ustream and NicoNico of the Vita with Mehdi(also a JPgaffer) we'll have 7 games and 2 Vita's both 3G models I believe. I have 2 HD cameras for live streaming as well as mics.

Anything you'd like us to highlight during the event?

I'll create a new thread a little closer to the Vita Launch.

I did something very similar when the 3DS was launched.
I just want some psp games shown on your vita to see how good BC is.

Its funny seeing takao complain about too many western developed games on a handheld . inst this a first? Most people said there wouldn't be enough western support.

That's actually my biggest issue with the Vita also. It's like Sony has sought out Western support for the system while ignoring the market that made the PSP what it is today.

They're probably counting on Japanese support coming gradually with time, though I'm not sure that'll work out very well.

Seemed to just be wanting Japanese games announced, and I can't blame someone for having that menality. Western game support is good, especially when it's either relevant to my interests (Bioshock) or able to ensure the system gains more traction and keeps a strong presence at retail (Call of Duty). Still, I want to know about stuff like Gravity Daze since I know stuff like Little Deviants is of no interest to me.

Japanese publishers are still clinging to the PSP, unless Sony is ready to carry most of the load in terms of day one Japanese content, there's nothing they can do, they don't have the necessary team for a JRPG, outside of Polyphony Digital (don't expect a GT Vita game anytime soon) and Toyama's team who are making Gravity Daze, Ueda's team is still struggling with the last guardian, they've got no manpower in Japan. The Square-Enix train has long since left the station and Sony basically can't count on ANY Japanese publisher for anything anymore, heck even after Sony published and co-developed Demon Souls, From ended up fucking them over, that's what happens when you're not in the position of power, you can't leverage anything.

I should update this.

Were there any notable title announcements outside of Unit 13 and the new Motorstorm game that people wanted included?

It's really just the exact same situation as PS3 during the years Microsoft was interested in the Japanese market (2005-2008 iirc) and during all that when 360 getting big named JRPGs and other thing all that time Sony did nothing and was just hopeless, they waited Microsoft to get tired of Japan to get the Japanese support back into PS3.

Now Nintendo is aggressively getting Japanese devs support for their system, just like the first Years of the 360 in Japan, and just like the early years of console gen in Japan..Sony again showing no resistance here at all, and I don't think it will change at all (I think it's just that Sony don't have the cash power anymore to get Japanese devs support to their platform, and SCEJ/Japan Studio is too small to do anything that matter for Vita).

They're probably counting on Japanese support coming gradually with time, though I'm not sure that'll work out very well.

Yeah, i'm guessing that they really weren't expecting Nintendo to be so aggressive when it came to going after exclusives. They've got to start taking things a lot more seriously now.

Japanese publishers are still clinging to the PSP

That may be true, but why isn't Sony pushing for those developers to release a Vita version of their games also? Isn't it possible to do cross platform multiplayer with the PSP and Vita? I'm still amazed that God Eater 2 isn't coming to the Vita. It's the second biggest Monster Hunter-style game out there, but it's exclusive to the PSP at this point.

Vita version need to have trophies, that may prevent them to sync the games so they can crossplay between psp and vita. And if they can't do crossplay between vita and psp, it's better to have it exclusive for psp to not split their fanbase into vita and psp.

Lord of apocalypse is a multipltform release for psp and vita and they can't crossplay with each other.

The OS, all those fancy integration and connectivity. Thanks for doing this.

It seemed to have been worthwhile (at least in Japan) to have ignored Microsoft's attempts there, since Japanese support drifted back to the PS3 and a lot of it to the PSP too, but it definitely seems like it'd be more dangerous for Sony to ignore Nintendo given Japan DOESN'T completely disregard them.

If Sony start pursuing jp 3rd party afternintendo show their hands, we probably won't see the result anytime soon, hopefully early next year we'll hear more of it.

or able to ensure the system gains more traction and keeps a strong presence at retail (Call of Duty).

This is an optimistic assumption. It's also the one that Sony seems to be banking the system's future on in the West, at least for the first year or so: namely, that there's a substantial, as-yet-unproven dudebro demographic that will eagerly embrace dedicated handheld gaming if the right software lineup is available. We'll see how that works out for them.

with waning appeal of Japanese games worldwide (in fact i cant recall the last million selling japanese game outside of Final Fantasy.....tho correct me if im wrong) i think sony realized it made more business sense to bulk up western support on Vita

well, they don't have to announce everything day one or in the early days. Plus a lot of the big guns will hold back to see how the user base grows.

Then there's situations like Monster Hunter - even if there IS a MH4th for Vita (most likely PSP + Vita HD) then there's no way they'd want to announce it given MH3G is their big Xmas title.

I'm not worried about Japan support. At least, not as long as units sell.

While I would agree they seem to be ignoring the Japanese market, I don't get where all this supposed Western support is.

You have tepid support from EA, who as far as I know, hasn't actually announced anything except FIFA (and I imagine Madden and so forth will show up). What about MoH? BF? NFS? I realize FIFA is a big game, bigger than Madden probably, but still...it's just a yearly release of a sports title.

You have Call of Duty announced, but nothing known - is it a port, an original title, what? Does it have a release date?

They flew in Epic to the Vita announcement, but Epic doesn't seem to be making anything.

Will it have a GTA? Saints Row? Mass Effect or any WRPG? Borderlands? Batman?

I realize it's somewhat hurt by releasing about 4 months after all these AAA titles of 2011 hit, so any ports to it would be late. But newly announced games don't seem to have a Vita version announced. Like that Test Drive: Ferrari.

They do seem to have a good job of getting Vita kits in the hands of smaller developers and some of the bigger players in the casual arena (such as Alawar), but what about PopCap? Until SOE ported some of PopCaps titles last year, the PSP was about the only platform that didn't have any games from PopCap. Even the Zeebo had some. Instead, they seem to have settled for Gameloft.

Aren't the best selling handheld games (worldwide) typically from Japanese companies? Sure, most of them are Nintendo made, but handheld gaming is an area where Japanese games still dominate. What Sony is making a huge gamble by focusing on Western developed games. If it works out then they could make a lot of money by having a handheld that's successful in Europe and the US. But if it doesn't take off in the West then they're in for a nightmare situation worldwide.

I just don't get why they don't have anything major announced from Japanese developers right now. I'm not suggesting that they should announce every major title that they have, but they really should announce something to get people excited about. Their biggest Japanese title is still Hot Shots Golf 6. I'm not sure what would be the next big title after that. Perhaps Dynasty Warriors Next?

EA doesn't seem to have much faith in traditional handhelds anymore. Their focus has shifted toward iOS. But Rockstar has said that they have multiple Vita titles in development. You've also got an original Bioshock title coming. Maybe i'm overstating how slanted the Vita feels in terms of Western and Japanese support, but it certainly feels like it's leaning more toward a Western focus.

The problem is with each companies existing release lists - they have things to publish and pursue over a number of platforms between now and early next year. Just announcing everything for Vita may damage the other revenue streams and, of course, the Vita might die in a horrific ball of flames so they possibly want to be mildly cautious with announcements.

What Sony is making a huge gamble by focusing on Western developed games.

huh ? the initial launch line up is pretty Japanese and then from that point on it looks like a mix akin to the PS3. I'm sure there'll be a ton of Japanese wares to come, i'm not worried about this being Western focused - especially- given Japan has moved strongly towards handheld gaming.

some Japanese online opinions from the Vita play event seem to be suggesting VT4 is REALLY kick ass.

Preordered it already - can't get enough of VT!

PS Vita firmware extractor released. It's nothing big, but it's a clear sign the scene is interested in Vita hacking.

The best bit about that is that this news is actually about 3 days old!

Haven't seen this posted... it would seem hackers are already tinkering around with the Vita. Firmware extractor released by SKFU --

Absolutely nuts! The hackers are going to tear this thing to shreds.

Huh, how are they doing this? The system isn't even publicly available yet. Well, regardless, ripping the firmware to your PC isn't the important part. Uploading custom firmware to the device itself will be the real test and given everything Sony has learnt from their last 2 systems, I'm willing to bet it won't be easy.

Lol releasing some screenshots and trying to scare Sony?

Not only is the memory card and the game card proprietery, the USB cable is proprietery. Sony is ready to battle some dumb hackers.

I wish this released this year in North America :(

I even hear that you don't manage the vita content from pc after you connect it to pc, you manage it from vita.

sounds kinda crazy though.

How is it possible that a firmware extractor has been released already? I'm wondering how hackers got their hands on a PS Vita at this point. For example, could this have come about because of a pre-release unit that was distributed to a developer or a member of the press?

Even if they've copied the firmware off an early production Vita or a dev model, it really doesn't mean much... All they've likely got is an encrypted file on a harddrive... good luck with that...

It took how long to bust the PS3 open? and it wasn't even "the scene" that cracked it, really, but sloppy, stupid encryption program design by Sony's team. I would be very surprised if they got a popular CFW on Vita in the first three or four years of its life...

Great post. I don't see where all this western support claim is coming from. How do we know COD, Bioshock, or Ass Creed (the only major non sports 3rd party western franchises announced AFAIK) are anything at this point? We haven't even seen a single screenshot for those games. The western games for PSV are 90% from SCEWWS.

It takes times to make games, folks.

It's risky investing a lot of money into a console with zero sales. You don't throw all your games on it immediately.

But still, Scamco, Konami, Capcom, SEGA and Square Enix all have been quite bullish with their support. I'd argue Scamco, Konami, and SEGA have a better 2012 lineup for PSP than they do announced games for Vita.
