Batman: Arkham City PC release date now Nov 18 - Steam version uses Steamworks

Yea, I've used a VPN for loads of games and had no issues. Pretty sure they only care if you try and use it to buy games.

So an update on this. I found something on google that suggested that I do the following:

1. Turn off AA in game and force it via the ATI CCC.
2. Turn off Vsync, and force it with triple buffering via d3d0verrider
3. Launch the game's exe directly from the games directory.
4. Tab out while the game is at the main menu and set the priority on it from normal to high or real time.

I performed these steps and the movie at the the court house went from 30 FPS to 60. In game when looking down at the thugs in the court house went from 30 FPS to mid 50's.

So for whatever reason the game isn't getting high priority from the CPU. The question I have is this an issue with the game or my system? I have nothing else running other than Steam so it should have all the resources it wants, but doesn't pull them.
 
This might be a stupid question, but what exactly does PhysX add to Arkham City?

In my attempt to "fix" the stuttering video issues (which was knocking all audio out of sync in all the non-game engine cutscenes) I've just been playing around with some settings. Turning PhsyX off seems to have sorted it. I deleted and restarted my previous save and I notice that since turning off PhsyX, I'm getting much smoother performance in some of the cutscenes that I know were causing problems before.

I don't know much about PhysX other than it's apparently a nice feature to have, so I'd rather have it on than not, but if it's causing sluggish performance I'll have to make do.

Were you running Vsync and triple buffering before? Because the 60 -> 30fps drop sounds like what would happen if you just had vsync enabled and the game was running at less than 60fps. The framerate would thus be halved.

Makes some papers flutter around and other completely pointless effects..
 
So is anyone else experiencing frequent crashes with the error message of rendering false exception or something along those lines? I've been unable to progress past the opening moments of the game due to the frequency of these crashes. It's particularly annoying.

You are using an Nvidia card, right? If no, then that's the reason for the slow performance. If yes, the performance shouldn't be that big a hassle (depending on your GPU). Physx allows you to see lots of physics based stuff, like flying paper, smoke, and batman's cape doing nice stuff.

I've got an Nvidia GTX 560ti, 1GB.

The performance generally is.. OK. Not as butter smooth as Arkham Asylum and there's abit of stuttering here and there, but I can live with it. The game looks and runs great for me in the most part. It's just the actual video sequences, everything from the Nvidia sequence at boot up to the cut scenes themselves (
the scene with Two Face hanging Catwoman over the acid at the start, for example
), has terrible stuttering and audio lag issues. It's all totally out of sync and barely comprehensible.

Or at least, it was before I disabled PhysX, which seems to have sorted it. I don't know how or why that's made a difference but apparently it has.

Ok I get that, but then why wasn't the game running at a constant 30 FPS? I rarely ever got 60 FPS but it was in the high 30's and 40's most of the time, and vsync with triple buffering was already on?
 
So, I'm getting random CTD's with this game game. it won't run for longer than a couple of minutes at a time.

Whatever the delay was it sure as hell wasn't for technical polish. It's almost like Bohemia Interactive infiltrated the QA department of every large game publisher.

Running dx9 all very high on a 570gtx.
 
I'm not having any issues with crashing, but I've only played about 2 hours. The game just isn't grabbing me like Arkham Asylum did. I think it's because the side missions I've found so far are just not very enjoyable to me... I usually get pretty OCD when it comes to side missions in open world games. I'll put some more time into it but I guess I'm just glad I paid $25 for it and not $50

I still have like 4 left I believe but yeah quite a few of them aren't that great. There's a few that are pretty good though.

The meat of the game is the Riddler stuff and story though. The story campaign was much better than AA to me with more baddies and better boss fights. It does start kind of slow though, I think if you even go back a few pages here you'll see me saying something like "so far it's pretty meh", but it turned out to be one of my top 5 games this year.
 
It's absolutely a slow starter. I played around 2 hours of it myself, but went away from that thinking "what the fuck was I just doing?" and decided to start again. I certainly "got it" and got more involved when I did that second restart.

There's alot of things about this that are overwhelming, in my opinion. Even simple stuff like the UI changes.. they really threw me off course. The game felt incredibly alien to me at first, moreso than any other sequel I can think of has.

i can't do the critical strikes (where you have to press x at a certain timing) because i'm so used to button mashing it during fights that i don't want to wait for the timing, heh.

there is soo much batman lore. i've never read the comics or anything like that, but i imagine if you are a big batman comic fan, playing this game is like jizzing yourself.

the buildings you go inside at the beginning of the game are just really short. just a few rooms. it was go from one tiny building to another for the first few hours. they are starting to get bigger but yeah i didn't like that.

i've never seen the catwoman movie w/ halle berry but i'm about to watch it, heh. might read a comic as well, i just really like the batman backstory.'

felt assassin creedy with soo much side stuff to do as well but since traveling around the city and figuring out the side mission stories is pretty fun, i don't mind. really liking this game, but it's not perfect.

Yea, I agree about the slow to start thing. I played for an hour and wasn't being grabbed by it, possibly because I was constantly on the lookout for performance issues. I re-started again and it's better.

As fo the UI changes, no freakin kidding, so plain compared to AA. The WayneTech screen in AA was much better than this. And is there any reason that we need a freaking neon green "LEVEL UP" notification in block letters at the top of the screen?! What if I don't wanna level up right away?
 
I actually feel the main HUD is a little too noisy, especially when you're on missions with a giant indicator taking up the bottom right-quarter of the screen.
 
I had not been paying attention at all recently, just heard that it has some DX11 issues.

So I go to play it today, wow, this game runs like garbage on my PC. I have an e8400/5870 and got a very stable framerate in AA at 1080p. I don't recall if I ran FRAPS all that often but it was never noticeably bad. So I start this up, figure turn off all the DX11 and 10 stuff and I should be good to go at medium at 1080p. Not at all! The scene with the prisoners near the beginning was varying from 20-40fps. And frequently in the low 20s.

Dropping down to 720p and medium I can get 40-50 FPS but I still get a pretty constant stutter that is not reflected in the FPS. It's especially bad when gliding through the city.

I seriously regret this purchase, even at $13. AA was such a stable PC port I didn't even think twice about buying this. Obviously Rocksteady is nowhere near the developer I thought they were.

Moral of the story though, just because your computer ran AA really well does not mean it can run this game satisfactorily.

Pretty much how I felt, and the game is designed in a way that if you ignore most sidestuff like I did this feeling won't really go away even after you finished the main storyline. Nevertheless, it is a great game and I suspect more enjoyable a second time around.
 
Bought this on Origin and its been fine so far. Im not running DX9 and am getting 45-60 FPS. Might turn off SSAO or crank down the AA and see if I can smooth it out at 60. We'll see.
I hope I dont run into the save issues that some of you are having. Id be pissed.

Awesome game. Travelling through the city is a blast and Catwoman is a welcome addition.

Please dont watch the Catwoman film. Just youtube Catwoman basketball scene to know what you are getting into..
 
Holy dickfucks Batman, getting repeatable Rendering error crashes at the point where you have to plant a bug on someone's henchman.
 
What the hell is this Dual-Core Optimizer thing that seems to be part of the installation process? Okay to just cancel this?
 
re downloaded the save that was on steam cloud.. its not current from where i was... 30-40 mins behind BUT i played through it and was about to make my way to
Strange tower
and the game keeps crashing every single time
 
Shame to hear some of you having problems with the game. Played about 11 hours of it, not a single crash and I'm getting great performance, the occasional stutter when moving around the city fast is not bothering me anymore.

i didn't experience any of these problems from the 1-12th hour of playing..

Same, although I've never had a problem with GFWL either so I tend to consider myself in the minority.

got the game off origin not too long ago. running well with no crashes. i just left the courthouse. i just gotta put it back to dx9 i guess to keep it locked at 60.

Oh god don't!!! That movie was VERY horrible. I would do so many things to be with Halle Berry but watching that movie is not one of them.
 
i give up i reverted to several saves and in all of them i glided to where the mission
Hugo Strange tower infiltration
was supposed to take place and in each of them the game crashes half way there


for those of you that do not have the problem back up your saves often.. i would say every time your done playing..


if anyone knows a way to gain access to the save that's on steam cloud let me know as i only tried the Right Click > Properties > Previous Versions and copied whatever was in there *still doesn't work*

I watched that movie to recover after my mind was scarred from Pan's Labyrinth (rather brutal and depressing). It was so bad it came around and was hilarious. I mean, it may be a bad movie about Halle Berry crawling around in leather, but there are worse things to make bad movies about.

I thought I had solved my problems with the game crashing at the GFWL log in screen earlier, but I guess not. Tried booting it up, and once again it crashes the minute the GFWL log in interface pops up. To get around it, I have to press the HOME button before the game gets to the title screen every single time I launch the game and make sure I log in before it would normally prompt for it. So annoying.
 
I'm not sure if any of you have the nVidia 3D Vision but this game uses the feature exceptionally well - even the cutscenes have 3D versions to them which is usually unheard of in this sort of game. Twoface's coin flipping right at me made me feel like I was at a Batman attraction at a themepark.

Out of all of Berry's movie, the one were my urge to bone something was the highest was on Perfect Stranger.
 
I love this game.

So much stuff to do. Amazing combat. Catwoman is incredibly sexy. Riddler is awesome. Joker is awesome.

I'm the god damn Batman.
 
I fixed my PhysX issue - sort of. Forcing the PhysX processor as the CPU is fine, however when using the GPU, the game crashes.
 
I heard that you need to complete certain side missions before you finish the game or else they will be locked off eternally. Is this true? What do I need to do first? I was planning on doing all this after I completed the main storyline, but I'm a little worried now.
