Batman: Arkham City PC release date now Nov 18 - Steam version uses Steamworks

Played fine yesterday. Just started it 3 times and it crashed as soon as I was about to sign in to GFWL... Nice.

Yup I got 3 crashes at the title screen today like I did when I first downloaded the game but then it started fine. Such a POS game from a technical standpoint, they didn't put any effort into this game at all.

Tried playing 30 minutes in DX11 with the 11.B hotfix. It is incredibly taxing for my unlocked 6950. I reached 80 degrees Celsius relatively quickly and I normally only reach 68-70 when playing games (even BF3 on Ultra was nowhere near as heat-generating).

Are you running on the Admin profile and have full access to that file?
Im on Admin as well and it reverted back for me too until I Took Ownership of the file.

Theres also a Take Ownership registry key you can add that will add "Take Ownership" to the options when you right click a file:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/wind...ership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/
Thats the method I used since I had to do it a while back for another program.

There are three "MaxSmoothedFrameRate" sections in the .ini.
I only changed two of them - the one under "Engine.Engine" and the one under "Engine.GameEngine". I am getting a solid 30 FPS now and it hasnt reverted back.
Its smoother now although clearly 30FPS and I still get the quick jitter when entering a new area.

Damn, still doesn't work having tried both methods. Just reverts to ugly, jerky 60.

I have the same card, wasn't it not utilizing the GPU enough before? I've only tried DX11 a couple of times, it was too jerky to bother with.

Right click the file, hit properties and click Read-only.

It runs like shit with my 2x unlocked 6950s. I laughed when I saw "optimized dx11" in the release notes.

Updated complaint list:

- Shitty performance
- Scripting bugs causing audio clips to be looped back after they finish playing
- Tutorial hints for moves which block 10% of the screen and don't go away
- Final cut-scene froze so I had to skip it
- Recycled the story from Batman Begins
- No graphical settings in-game at all
- Unskippable intro movies
- I select the DLC store option, get taken to the Steam page for the game which in my region says "Oops! This game isn't out yet!"

What a fucking mess.

Hah @ people calling this a "bad pc port". In the grand scheme of things this is probably on the medium-end side of things. It also has most of the same faults as Asylum did (other than some crashing - happened to me once at the opening menu) so I don't see how this is so unexpected.

Do I need to play arkham asylum I order to understand the story of arkham city?
No but honestly AC is not like a megaton leap from AA, you might as well play AA first anyway.

Did you try this?
I didnt have to do it for some reason but sci is right...the default .ini is set to Read Only which might be the problem. I had this issue when editing Skyrims ini.

The game overwrites the ini you edit each time you start it. To get your changes to stick you need to change it to Read-Only.

Personally I'm less annoyed at the quality of the port, and more at the quality of the game.

Bah. Tired typing haha. I can afford to get one of the DLC's. Which is the best?

That is what I TRIED to say... All night Batman and WWE12 sessions are going to be the end of me...

I think Robin is the one who's most fun to play as of the two. They're both very similar to Batman when it comes to gadgets though.

It's kind of a crappy port as of now though it will be patched and fixed up most likely. It's just the launch of the game combined with how disrespectful WB and Rocksteady was to PC gamers leading up to launch that really sours me on the whole thing. I really like the game but I won't be buying the next one if they pull this shit again.

Alright, am I crazy, or does the game just look a lot better in DX11? Is it that the AO's of much higher quality, or better color-grading or something?

The new drivers from AMD seem to have made the game run smoother for me, but I still drop to 20fps in open areas. The stuttering is awful only when entering an area for the first time now. If I return, it's gone.

Are the Robin/Nightwing maps just the same ones as the Batman/Catwoman ones?
All 4 characters can play on any challenge map. Robin and Nightwing DLC adds 2 unique challenges each (one predator and one combat). Robin's combat challenge is a bit different than the other ones as the camera angle mimics a 2D beat'em'up.

The new challenge maps from Robin and Nightwing work with Batman and Catwoman right?

Game crashes every 5 minutes for me. Guess I'll wait for some patches. Oh well, at least I have a bunch of other big games to play right now.

DX11 renderer can look even better on its own than DX9, excluding HBAO etc DX11 effects.

You'll be able to get close to maxing it, yeah.

Is there a definitive list of ini settings to make in order to make the game look better?

Let me compile all of my posts in this thread...

Edit: For max quality Arkham City (DX9), change the following settings in bmengine.ini in My Documents/WBGames

Code:
MaxShadowResolution=4096 ;(try 2048 if you encounter shadow glitches, ALSO change this in Userengine.ini!!)
MinShadowResolution=32
MaxAnisotropy=16
bEnableBranchingPCFShadows=True
bAllowBetterModulatedShadows=True
bEnableForegroundShadowsOnWorld=True
bEnableForegroundSelfShadowing=True
bAllowWholeSceneDominantShadows=True
SizeOfPermanentObjectPool=19600000 ;(optional, may allow more RAM usage)
HysteresisLimit=20
DropMipLevelsLimit=16
StopIncreasingLimit=12
StopStreamingLimit=10

Have you gone through each of these settings, turning them off and on and comparing screenshots? Would be very interested in seeing before and after shots.

Nice, thanks a lot. I'll have to play with these settings in a bit.

Let's open an official Arkham City PC performance thread with this in the OP (or let's change this thread's title and put it in this one's OP).
Or you're gonna have to repeat this stuff every 2 pages.

I've seen a lot of posts complaining about DX11 performance, but not much from people having problems with DX9. I bought this game at Origin's Black Friday sale, and so far, the cutscenes are stuttering like mad, and I'm having tons of sound issues (especially with voices). The framerate was really shaky at the default settings (high with Physx off), when I had great results with the same settings on AA. Turning everything down to medium doesn't seem to help my performance, either.

I know that my PC is aging, but it can still run Crysis on very high @ 25-30 fps, and it ran AA beautifully, so I don't think there should be any issues here. This was my most anticipated game of the year by far, and this is definitely souring the experience.

For reference, I'm using a GTX 280 video card, a dual core 3.34GHz processor and 4 gigs of ram on 64 bit Windows 7.

No sir, I do that sometimes but I'm more into performance comparisons. I need to start making GIF's of the differences or something. The biggest visual difference is in Max Shadows, I'm not sure if the other shadow settings even work. However, after turning everything on, the shadowing effects sure do look great. Just need DX11 to make them look even better.

The latter suggestion might be more appropriate, I'm not sure if an Arkham City PC performance thread would garner enough interest. I'll make it though if enough people feel there's a need.

If not, we can send a request to the mods for a change in the OP.

What type of Anti-Aliasing settings do you have? It defaulted to FXAA for me and that killed performance, which is why I switched to 4X MSAA instead.

I managed to beat the game with pretty much no problems on DX9 and PhysX set at normal. I got crashes at start while checking for DLC, but I blame that squarely on GFWL Marketplace fucking up. Time to wait for the Batman costume DLC before jumping into new game plus.

Isn't FXAA supposed to be a lot less demanding than MSAA?

If it is, then it must have been glitched. Cause I was hitting 20 to 30 fps with FXAA on their benchmark with DX9 settings and wondering what the hell was going on. Switched to MSAA and got back up to 50 to 60 fps.

I don't know but from what I have experience so far (about 6-7 hours playing). 2x/4x MSAA runs much better with my setup than FXAA - Medium.

i5-2500K @ 3,3 GHz
HD 5770 with CCC 11.11b in DX9 with Vsync
4 GB RAM
everything maxed (but obviously no physix and DX11)

Still get some small stuttering in the city from time to time (average 30FPS with dips in the low 20s). Without Vsync it runs with a smooth FPS (never <30) but I get a lot of screen tearing.

The latest driver from NVIDIA's site: 285.62

The default was FXAA - Medium, and I was playing it at FXAA - Low until I saw this post. I changed it over to 2x MSAA, went into the game, and the same issues persist.

I do need to clarify - the game isn't running great, but not tragically bad, either. It is the cutscenes in which the game decides to shit itself. Sound goes out of sync and the video begins to stutter like mad.
