The PlayStation Vita In 2011-2012

According to @Twentytoo, the home+start screenshot function works anywhere on the system, not just games. So basically is a general 'print-screen' function.

He tried youtube too, but obviously that isn't working without flash support. I guess there'll be an app in due course.

Youtube should redirect the Vita's useragent to the HTML5 website for the time being. Sony should get on that right away if there are no plans for an app at the moment. The site is getting better by the day.

If there will be a death blow to the Vita, it will be that people don't want to buy $40 off-shoot portable games when they can get last month's AAA console blockbusters for the same price or less, especially when those blockbusters appeal to the exact same audience.

good luck porting PS3 control scheme onto the PSvita back touch pad then....

From my impressions at the mall regarding multitasking:

It's difficult to tell which apps close the game in progress and which don't. So I just opened random ones while having Modnation Racers suspended.

Would open ok:

Camera (although it won't let you take pics without mem card)
Settings
Trophies
Content Manager

Would open if I closed the game:

Videos
Welcome Park (this is like its own game though, has a trophy list)

Flicking between suspended apps was instantaneous though. Experienced no lag or pause when doing so.

I'm going to go back and play around more. Perhaps I needed to close some items before trying to open videos.

Same here. Music opened though so that suggests that there will be Custom Soundtrack at the OS level.

The only thing I worry about is the length of the game--have there been any impressions about it yet?

The demo was EXTREMELY easy. Don't know what difficulty set they had it and how much longer each chapter was supposed to be, but from what I played it seems that it'll be real easy to finish the game. Lack of multiplayer will hurt this games' sales IMO.

does anyone know if the web browser can be run beside games? it would be nice to to not require another device to boot up gamefaqs or check some random thing without exiting out

I tried and it told me I needed to quit the game to use the browser.

Just found this gigantic impressions post about the recent UK Vita event:

http://www.mritservices.com/27/11/2011/playstation-vita-rooms-london-preview-blowout/

It seems like every preview I've read for Resistance: Burning Skies game is really positive and it always surprises me that they are. It seems like some budget game by a not-great developer, but apparently it's shaping up to be pretty good. And it has online multiplayer, but we haven't really seen what that is going to be like.

Did we ever get to see the Zone mode in WOHD that failed Sony's epilepsy test?
I think that there were comparison videos before release showing the difference between the preview and final builds of the game. The main difference was that they toned down the EQ effect on the track and billboards.

I was looking for some of the video comparisons again but the link that I found doesn’t seem to work any more.

Edit: Here is the comparison video: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6q23u_wipeout-hd-preview-final-comparison_videogames

So wait... Possibly no PSP digital games on launch? Because I was just going to buy and play Trails in the Sky for the first few months

PS1 emulation is what they are talking about not being supported out of the box I thought? Unless I misunderstood.

He's talking about the story about Game Archives not working on the Vita at launch. But whether that means just TG-16 and PS1 games, or PSP as well I dunno.

Game Archives are only PS1, and TG-16 games in Japan. PSP games aren't under that, and Sony hasn't given any indication that PSP support won't be there day one. Given that the UMD program was created, I imagine it's there day 1.

:| so should have made it onto the retail version of the handheld.

To me people seem to be generally really excited about the Vita (except for the usual cynics). It has a fantastic launch line-up, the entry price is fine (and was very well received when they announced, how short people's memories are). A 4gb will do the people with less money fine. Cross-play with the PS3 out of the gate is a great feature that I think people will be excited about. It helps that some good titles are supporting it.

I am very cautious to be excited about Uncharted because we've seen so few environments and for a launch title to live up to the standards set in Uncharted 3 is in my mind virtually impossible. I will pick it up but my expectations are low.

I am however very excited about several other launch titles. Gravity Daze is definitely high on my list but there are plenty others I'm excited about. As a side note to this, I think Resistance has a chance to surprise people. At least for us who enjoyed Resistance on the PS3.

If they ever release a tablet that's Vita compatible (with buttons/sticks) I would definitely get that at the $500-$600 iPad price. I hope it happens. I think it would be a very popular combo and one that stands a chance to really compete with the iPad.

All I'm expecting out of it is something more like UC1. If they deliver that kind of game and focus on exploring and discovering more than shooting, it's a win for me. If it follows too closely to UC3, I'll start to get UC fatigue.

Welcome Park has trophies.

Isn't 'Welcome Park' just a hardware tutorial of sorts? Clever of them to put Trophies in it if so.

From the article:

Unlike Uncharted the game also feels like it will bring a fully fledged experience to the handheld over a cut down version. I have high hopes for this game being very good although critics have always been quick to label the Resistance games as generic and therefore I fear that sales will not reflect the stunning quality of this game.

Verdict: Hardcore experience, great presentation, great game play, Nice use of Vita controls, A game you should really buy, Brilliantly migrates the first person shooter experience to a handheld device

Very surprised at that preview? I wasn't planning on buying it but maybe the game plays better than it looks?

Yeah, UC1 level is fair to expect. The jungle parts look as good as UC1 (almost anyway, have to play it to really make a judgement) but I expect it to be shorter considering the development time.

I expect the critics will be harsh on it.

Quite a few of the media likes the Resistance franchise so maybe you should compare it to that? If you don't like Resistance on the PS3, maybe don't expect a great game on the Vita. I personally think it has a lot of potential and think some of the footage we've seen looks like a lot of fun and atmospheric.

I think golden abyss will surprise people. It's not gonna surpass u3 in cinematic scope, but I have a feeling that iw will actually have more meat in the gameplay. Interview from game director said lots of encounter can be done by stealth, more hidden path to encourage exploration, and drake got tools like machete and a camera this time to mix things up. Also, apparently the treasure and artifact now are tied to minigame like taking photo or arranging puzzle pieces etc.

He sounds as though he is a massive Resistance fanboy, but you never know.

I feel like not including a rip/port of either Uncharted 2 or 3's multiplayer in Golden Abyss was a missed opportunity.

WORD OF ADVICE

You can't delete your account info from the Vita, at least not from the demo units going around the malls.

Thankfully I had asked one of the reps if I could sign in using my account, and when I couldnt find a way to delete my info, they ended up formatting the unit.

So yeah, don't do it without asking one of their reps, otherwise your info might stay stored on the PSV.

To all Tokyo-Gaffers planning to go to the Vita events - remember that the Roppongi Hills event will have more games than the others, so if you want to play Ragnarok Odyssey, Lord of Apocalypse and a few more, don't waste your time in Shinjuku/Shibyua etc.

We need some fresh impressions of Ragnarok Odyssey. It looks a lot more promising than LoA, so someone from JGAF should get on it.

I'll try to play it during the said event, as it's the title I'm most hyped for, except Gravity Dash (or whatever its title is now).

Another look at 'Live Tweet', the Vita twitter app.

http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2011/11/28/how-to-tweet-on-playstation-vita/

Kind of pedestrian, it's just a run-of-the-mill Twitter client afterall. Looking forward more to seeing the Flickr app though.

When asked about multitasking in the comment section...

Yes you can. One of my favourite things about PS Vita is the multitasking. You just hit the PS button to go straight to the Home menu where you can tweet, browse the web, talk to your party – pretty much anything else except for starting up another game – and then jump right back into what you were playing and carry on from where you left off.
A confirmation is at least something.

Yeah, but it's not quite EVERYTHING else. Like video doesn't, and I suppose that kind of makes sense. But yeah, it's at least nice that they're still publicly committing to all that jazz so close to launch.

Anywho, the second part of that needlessly exhaustive Vita accessory interview has been posted.

The guy in the background sounds like he's fapping to the second case.

Edit - Or is that one new? Not sure actually.
