Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

Unlike Deadly Premonition, Chrono Trigger is a good game so people have to complain about the hosts instead of the quality of the software.

The last act of Deadly Premonition is brilliant. But the rest of the game is terrible. That said, I really enjoyed watching both of the parallel runs last year.

I only watched the Vinny/Jeff DP ER. I always thought about going back to watch Brad and Ryan, but I didn't want to overdo it.

Yeah, this team is pretty good as well, i was laughing a lot, especially at the names.

Could you guys spoil a bit for us, first timers that never played Brono Trigger, and expand on this? What choices did they screwed up?

- Nearby Gato: You might see some old man's lunch. If Crono eats the
lunch, the old man will later accuse him of eating the lunch.
- Near the telepods: Before approaching the telepods for the first time,
Marle will stop and browse a candy store. If Crono tries to run away
twice, Marle will say: "There's no need to drag me off like a
kidnapper!"
- At Leene's Bell: When Crono first bumps into Marle, if Crono takes
Marle's necklace _before_ talking to Marle following the collision, this
will be noted in court.
- At Melchior's: If Marle is in the party, Melchior will ask Crono if he
could talk Marle into selling her necklace. If you say "yes," the
prosecution will note this in court.
- Nearby the caveman dance: A girl has lost her cat. The cat is nearby
Gato's place. Talk to it once, and it'll follow you - talk to it twice,
and it'll run away. If it runs away, the girl is called in as a witness
for the prosecution in the case. (If you return the cat, the girl is
called in as a witness for the defense in the case.)
- While in court: The prosecutor will ask Crono who was responsible for
the collision. If you blame it on Marle when you really bumped into her,
it counts against you.
- Also while in court: The prosecutor will ask Crono if he was tempted
by Marle's fortune. It counts against Crono if you admit to temptation.

If you want to be innocent, try not to do any of the above.

If Crono is found guilty, he is immediately locked up and detained for
five days before being executed.

If Crono is found innocent, he is detained for five days, but the
Chancellor has him executed anyway. The only difference between being
guilty and innocent, besides the dialogue, is if Crono is found
innocent, some sympathizers will leave him some Ethers.

The most mindblowing thing about this is finding out how many people in this thread have not played Chrono Trigger... seriously? Or am I just getting old?

I never played it originally on the SNES. I did play it in early 2000s, but I don't remember ANYTHING about the game (and I never beaten lavos).
I did finish the floating mountain dungeon in all three (four?) timelines
.

ALso, I just got to Lavos
(the last lavos, the one that takes the longest to arrive)
, died the first time, and never played the game again. So I never finished the game.

By the time it came out on the SNES, I was moving away from gaming. I played a few hours on the DS port but I couldn't get into it. (I can't get into long gaming sessions on a portable.)

so, yeah, this is all new to me and I look forward to seeing how it goes with Ryan and Patrick

Well I have just played it this year but I never owned any nintendo systems other than the gameboy. It was all about Amiga for me back then.

Looks like I have something to watch when I get home.

...My boyfriend said I was nitpicking the first episode more than I think I was, so lol. He doesn't even want to see this ER even though he was a fan of the other two just because of the game selection. I dunno. *shrug*

Just watched the first episode and boy was I amazed! That game looks so good. It's just the kind of jrpg I want to play, there's no random battles! I thought the game would be boring but no, I am hooked and want to see how it all ends! If this was on PS store I would buy right now!
Don't bother getting the PSN version if you have a DS/3DS/whatever version of DS. CT DS is the definitive version, and it has all the animated extras, sound test extras, etc that the PSX version does. It also has a few more quests (even though they kind of suck).

I'd personally go with either the SNES/VC version or the DS version. The DS version's music is also quite good (they made a few audio improvements here and there since they don't have to work with a bunch of channels anymore). The PSX version's music is missing a few audio effects and channels, which kind of bugged me. :/

It's even making me feel old, and I'm not even that old. :lol

Did they change the translation for the DS version?

I don't remember Brog being that Olde Englishy.
Brog never used Ye Olde Englishe in the Japanese version, so the DS version's translation is more consistent with the Japanese version. Brog is snarkier in the Japanese and DS versions; he never spoke like a formal knight as he did in Woolsey's translation.

(Actually that isn't really Old English, which is waaaay more complicated than that with crazy morphology and symbols @_@)

I like both translations, tbh. Each have their good points... plus I grew up with the Woolsey translation, so I have a soft spot for it.

Really enjoyed 2nd ep.
But god I sit here like GRRRR come on you miss so much cool stuff.
But than again I also like it this way, to see people do this differently.

They should've just left the SNES running through the duration. Double Endurance Run, Ryan and Patrick plus 20 year old hardware pushed to the limits!

I use euro store. And playing on Nintendo platform isn't an option since I don't own any. Is the PSX version bad?

Kinda. Playing it is always better than not playing it, but the PSOne version is pretty much the worst way to experience it. One of Chrono Trigger's greatest strengths is its breezy gameplay, but that gets wiped away with some pretty bad loading times. I replayed it on PSOne a couple years ago when it was the only version convenient to me, so it's still playable, but not preferable.

I'm starting to watch a bit of this now... Definitely enjoying this episode WAY more than the first!

Patrick should try to keep some of the stuff he remembers locked up in his brain until the time comes to unlock that stuff. I figured he'd remember more and more as time went on. :/

Oh God, I will never stop laughing at Ryan's tendency to have Brono walk into walls or obstructions just to make his head shake "no". LOL. SCIENCE.

I wonder when they're going to learn how to make use of enemy positioning properly when using techs/double techs/triple techs. Ah, they'll learn eventually. Giving Bobo/Brobo and Lucca Speed Tabs will be extremely useful as well.

But it's nice to see they're enjoying Hiroyuki Ito's ATB 2.0! One of my favourite battle engines ever.

And :D at Ryan enjoying Woolsey's version of Frog Brog.

This episode was better than the last. I can't wait until they get to
65 million BC and Zeal.

I've played Chrono Trigger a lot. I have a lot of games to go through right now. But... but... I'm feeling the urge to play through it vanilla (ie: sans NG+). It's also what made Mitsuda one of my favourite composers of the forever. Er... Chrono Trigger's one of those games that makes me feel overwhelmingly happy, so I like to sing along to the themes like Patrick seems to do. :D

At this point, my only real problem is that it's clear that Patrick remembers more about the game than he's letting on.

Will that be a big deal? I dunno. I don't recall CT having any big huge PLOT TWISTS, but it loses some of the purity of it all*.

I will say that I think they'll have some problem once they reach
Zeal
if they don't grind a little, because they've already missed out on quite a big of EXP.

*Yes, I know that the fans were asses and spoiled Jeff silly for Persona 4. I think he just hid his foreknowledge a little better. Or maybe I'm reading too much into things?

Is CT the type of SNES JRPG where you can get stuck due to the combat? I crapped out of a few of the older ones because the bosses just got ridiculous and I wasn't going to grind my way out of the hole.

There is one boss n the game who is stupid hard, but other than that it's pretty easy.

Spoiler on episode 2:
They missed the bromide

This is fucking amazing. (from the GB forum)

They can just grind out some tech points at the Hunting Ground in
Prehistory
and they'll be fine. You don't necessarily have to grind it up in CT. However, they might have some issues with
Azala + Black Tyranno
,
Giga Gaia
, and a few of the later bosses / sidequest bosses if they don't re-enter some maps to battle enemies again. I know a few people who had trouble with the
R-Series
, but they aren't too bad...

...that's a good question... I wonder which method they're going to use to finish the game with:
1.
Using the Bucket
2.
Going through the Black Omen

Edit: just got to the part where they missed the
Naga-ette Bromide...
but it isn't too important since it results in a Magic Capsule.

The latter is much harder, but so much more epic. The easy way out is to
enter Cataclysm via the Epoch
of course.

I certainly hope they go the latter route for the same reasons.
I feel it also provides more closure to the basic game disregarding the the DS/PSX additions.

Don't you have to go through the
Black Omen
to unlock NG+?
For the SNES version, yes.

It is not required in the DS version (and the same likely goes for the PSX version).

I've played quite a bit of Chrono Trigger and all these spoilered terms and locations sound foreign to me.

I have to go back.

I take back what I said earlier. I'm getting into the groove and I'm finding Patrick and Ryan more enjoyable than I thought I would.

Nope! NG+ is unlocked regardless of the ending you get (barring Game Overs, of course).

Going through the
Black Omen the first time
gets you the producer ending. It's one of the only two ways to get it.

Anyone who didn't enter the endgame via
Black Omen
lost out. That's definitely the best way to go.

Also, has anyone here (real spoilers! I'm serious!)
beaten Lavos during the first encounter? As much as I love this game, I've never gone NG+ and tried to beat him when he first appears, but I understand it's certainly possible.

Hmm... according to my DS cart I am 19:42 hours in.
Brono is level 40 and the chapter title is 'The Fated Hour'.

The real question is will I be happier waiting for the Endurance Run to catch up, or should I go ahead and continue?

Yeah, I did. Think it was on my second run of NG+ because he's fucking HARD at that point.
But only that first part. Once you crack the shell, the second fight is normal. But that first part is a pain in the ass, because he loves using that stupid needle attack that constantly drains your health.

As I said, it's the producer ending.

Er... no... For the SNES version, you had to beat the Black Omen to get NG+, iirc.

Regarding the producer ending, are you sure? The two ways to get The Dream Project ending are:
1.
Beating the game with Crono at the beginning of the game by using the right telepod.
2.
Beating Lavos during the Ocean Palace Incident

The prerequisite for The Dream Project is obviously to have ability to start a NG+ for the easier way. The harder way is more satisfying, however.

I enjoyed this episode way more. Cant wait for them to meet Robo, since Patrick loves to talk about the music so much.

Wait, I'm now getting inconsistent information. But yeah, looks like you do have to at least
beat the Black Omen, but not necessarily fight Lavos though it.

All I know is that I got NG+ regardless of
the way that I encountered Lavos. Epoch, bucket, what-have-you.

As for me, when I say
Black Omen the first time I meant the Ocean Palace Incident.... since, after all, the Ocean Palace IS the Black Omen. Kind of. You know?

I take back what I said earlier. I'm getting into the groove and I'm finding Patrick and Ryan more enjoyable than I thought I would.

I also take my earlier comment back and I think it already gets boring after the second episode. After the initial nostalgia flash I realized that Chrono Trigger does not work as an ER game for me . :(

You are incorrect. You get NG+ regardless of the ending you get. Seriously, look it up.

As for me, when I say
Black Omen the first time I meant the Ocean Palace Incident.... since, after all, the Ocean Palace IS the Black Omen. Kind of. You know?
I did, and I played a fresh cart back then. And all the sources agreed that in the SNES version, you had to
beat the Black Omen in order to unlock NG+ back then
. Honestly, just search for it and you'll come across multiple sources saying this is the case.

If I recall correctly, if you had gotten New Game+ prior to that, even though you erased all your saves or bought a used cart, the capacity to unlock NG+ no matter which ending you got after that remained.

Edit: lol, looks like we cleared that up. No issues. ^_^

As for your second point...
LOL, okay, the Ocean Palace isn't named as the Black Omen dungeon until it floats up in the sky! But I see your point.

Funny story related to that. The first time I played Chrono Trigger, it was a rental, and I didn't know what I was doing so I started a New Game+ instead of a Normal Game. Luckily, I used a not-finished save so I wasn't super-duper over-powered. Anyway, related to your spoiler,
I ended up being powerful enough to beat Lavos at the first encounter when I got to him, and for a good while I thought I had beaten the entire game until my friend told me that wasn't supposed to happen.
Whoops. I later went back and played it again and started an actual new game instead of a new game plus and had the whole experience. It was like experiencing the game all over again!
