How would you prefer Chrono Trigger gets remade?

HD-2D with the ability to switch back to the original graphics.

Ability to toggle the ps1 FMVs on or off

Ability to play the DS extra content as an Extra mode

Ability to switch between the different translations (at the start of a new game?)

Ability to switch between original music and a newly recorded sound track by a symphony orchestra

HD-2D or the way they are remaking Dragon Quest VII with Reimagined

Since Akira Toyama worked on the game, I would rather they go the Dragon Quest VII Reimagined route when it comes to graphics

I would want them to remake the DS Version

Also have an option to play with the OG graphics and other stuff like Mitsurux Mitsurux says

just like HD2D remake like octo or dq is fine, buuuuut, if SE wants more, they could remake with graphic like i am setsuna or sand land
i am setsuna is nice game, sadly the world is not ready at the time

Full 3D remake, maybe with celshaded graphics to keep with the anime aesthetics.
like this would be amazing.....MHStories 3 is looking one of best looking cell shading style I have seen in games.

I don't have any problems with the Steam version. That said, remake it all with smooth, early mobile gaming polygonal sprites and give all the songs a trap remix. Very much needs some outsourced 3D backgrounds too.

I know, we'd prefer new games, but we also know how devs/pubs are lazy these days and prefer the quick buck remaster/remake over being creative for themselves. End of rant.

So how would you like Chrono Trigger remade? Remaster of the original just in 4k/60fps? That 2D-HD style? Full on remake with 3D models?

I think I'd like the 2D-HD style. Only to still hold true to the original art design, while also making it look fresh and new.

Just finished DQ 1 remake and that is definitely how these games should be done, imo

Give us a good port or remaster, done.

If they want to see if people beyond just those on forums and gaming communites online care about Chrono Trigger then do a 2D-HD remake, i swear Square-Enix must think Chrono is a franchise that only a very loud minority care about considering what they have done with it since Cross.

A 2D-HD remake would be the perfect way of showing that people do care.

About Chrono Trigger:
  • It should have stylised anime graphics in Akira Toriyama's style. Not whatever FF7R has.
  • It should be Cell shaded and better than Dragon quest 11. That game looked cheap.
  • Don't get cold feet on the Raunchy stuff or Toriyama will roll in his grave.
  • The enemies should play around on the map when don't engaged in battle. If they had enough determination to do it in the original, it should be in the remake.
  • Don't break it into parts. Don't cut content to sell it later. The game should be designed as a complete package.
  • Rebalance in combat is permitted. New skills or mechanics that would give it flavour are welcome.

If they decide to touch Chrono Cross:
  • Give stuff for the hundreds other recruitable characters to do when not in your party. Send them on missions or whatever.
  • Give story to the other characters. This isn't Suikoden. Make story pieces trigger after certain levels mid mission or something.
  • Revamp the leveling. It's unexpectedly irrelevant.
  • Give it better battle music.
  • Don't lock stuff behind horrible decisions. I'm looking at you Razzly's final skill!

I would love it to get the pixel remaster like treatment but more important then anything they need to buy the rights to this fan made track from the cancelled fan game from the early 2000's. I've been listening to this song for decades at this point.

How would you prefer Chrono Trigger gets remade?

A big budget remake like FFVIIR but using instead a flat cel shaded art style like the one from Cyberconnect or Arc System Works to match the artstylke Akira Toriyama did use for the illustrations and designs he made for the game:

The OST would be remade with updated versions of the classics like in FFVIIR, and the gameplay would have the same turn based one of the original, but this time allowing you to same anywhere and having trophies.

This is how I'd do it, but being realistic their sales espectations must be way lower than FFVIIR, so the budget would be way lower too. In that case I think 2DHD is the way to go.

I can't imagine a world where 1 option is better than 2.

A remake wouldn't erase the original.
While that's true, some people would see it as ultimately pointless to produce a weak product that harms the legacy of a brilliant one. There will always be fans who adore the new product as well. It's just differing of opinions and, while I'm understanding of the position of those who would want a remake, I am firmly on the other side of the issue.

Sure, it's more likely than a remake wouldn't live up to the original but as consumers we can only win: if it sucks we just don't buy it but if it just happens to be good...

The only 3 acceptable remake options for Chrono Trigger are HD-2D (DQ3 remake style), Diorama (DQ7 Reimagined style) or 3D cell-shaded anime style with toriyama's designs.

In hindsight, a PS3/360-era faithful remake would've been good, back when AAA games could cost $20M versus $50M today.

If the Clair Obscur team had the means, the way, and the desire, I'd bet they'd do a remake justice.

Like that Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined
Anything less would feel cheap and pointless. If it's still 2D then why bother? It would be boring to see the world again in 2D even if it has a shiny lighting filter over it.

They have the technology to make it look like the artwork drawn for the original game.

I prefer it in the style of Final Fantasy VII Remake. If they aren't going to make a big transformation, then it doesn't need a remake, just a remaster

You mean rape all the character out of it and change dark gritty and intriguing into Kingdom Hearts fluff? Hmm, no thanks.

Chrone Trigger can simply be remade in the style of Octopath Traveler.

I don't see the FF7 remake as something light like KH, but what's funny is that Chrono Trigger actually does have a lighter vibe similar to KH, it only gets darker in Chrono Cross. I think both Chronos would look amazing as full AAA JRPGs, with bigger worlds, better animations, upgraded combat, and graphics close to CGI… or at least something like DQ XI.

The original Chrono Trigger art style is way more pleasant and interesting to look at than that diorama/miniature blurred look from Octopath. That would be a huge, unnecessary art downgrade. In that case, a 4K remaster of the original would be better than that sad fate. The original CT concept art would look beautiful translated into a more ambitious in-game style

Super Mario RPG remake should be the template. Keep the top down camera but use 3D models for everything. Mimic the 16-bit style expression animations during story sequences. Allow a choice between arranged music and the original SNES tunes. The one change I'd make is a dynamic camera during battles to show off the techs.

If SE try to do a FF7-style full 3D remake it'll take forever, or they'll screw it up, or both.

No remake. It doesn't need it. Leave it alone and make a new game in the series. Hell, I wouldn't even be mad at a reboot. But, ideally, I want Chrono Break.
