Completed colony? I'm only a few hours in, but is there a Dark Cloud/Suikoden-eque section where you rebuild a town? If so, I must immediately return to this game.

Yes, there is. The quest takes up practically the entire game and is one of the most satisfying aspects of the game once it's finished.

Judging by the audio in the trailer just released

Did they re-localize this for North America?

...kinda hope so. English voices didn't do it for me.

EDIT: NVM, paid more attention, doh

Yeah it's got a little premium on the price... And it's not an RPGS, which tend to hold value down the line.
Then yeah, if Xenoblade is sold in this manner (with limited copies being printed), and also because it's an RPG that people generally hold in high regard, then I'm sure it might be considered a collector's item in the end if a lot of copies don't get out there.

The thing that I've really appreciated about the game is that it felt like a jRPG with a LOT of the fat cut off. Almost all the tedium that you normally have with a game like this was gone. Fast travel basically anywhere you've been at any time. Doing a side mission? Once it's done, it's DONE; no need to return to the guy who sent you on it. Save points? Gone. Don't want to battle? For the most part, you don't have to. Need to do a mission at night? Set the time.
That's something I appreciated about the game a lot too. In that manner, it's kind of like a game for those who want to play a content-packed RPG, but are pretty busy and don't want to go through all the tedium that eventually takes up a lot of time. Much of the game was designed around convenience, which is a nice thing. It made questing a lot more convenient and did it with the right methods.

I heard that The Last Story kind of does this as well, but goes the FFXIII route in terms of linearity and chapter-based design, but it doesn't feel as limited as FFXIII did because it provided a lot of tasks for the player to accomplish.

This was my favourite part of the game, no lie... >.>

Getting The Last Story next year certainly helps ease the pain of knowing Dragon Quest X became an MMORPG, even if it's such a different take on JRPGs.
I know that feel, bro.

Shulk is bloody annoying (oh no I don't know If can keep going anymore! Every 2 cutscenes he repeats this past the halfway wark).
When my boyfriend was playing my copy for a bit, he ended up making Shulk jump for 30 minutes because he couldn't stop laughing at how pathetic Shulk sounded when he jumped... also the jump animation was funny. He really disliked Shulk.

And you outlined the problem I had with the majority of the quests. I thought the majority of them were going to be more in-depth than fetch quests much of the time, but ah well.

I was skeptical at first (English accents in a sci-fi game??). But they're very well-done, very charming, and somehow, quite appropriate to translate a Japanese story in a way I wouldn't have expected.

It also helps because our ears are trained to hear British/Australian accents with mythological and foreign worlds from film.

Not sure why you feel British voices in sci-fi game would be weird considering how many british voices there are in sci-fi.
<-----------

not british

English accents exist only in fantasy worlds and the past.

Yes. Exactly. The future belongs to the USA!

It also helps because our ears are trained to hear British/Australian accents with mythological and foreign worlds from film.

This is basically the reason... At least in the world of recent game and film voice overs, most productions have only featured specifically English casts if they are based in classical fantasy/foreign worlds.

Xenoblade shows that it's just fine for this to change, though. English-accented jRPGs are now officially charming.

Ah, this is great news, but now I need to sell my PAL copy before it plummets in value.

Thankfully I haven't opened it (as I got it right before Skyward Sword came out), I'm okay taking a $10 or $20 hit if I need to to support the US version.

That's a good idea. And that way I don't have to support Gamestop

I also don't feel like Gamestop is guaranteed to get it to you any better than Nintendo themselves. They'll surely print enough copies to cover orders from them directly.

Let's just hope the devil doesn't tempt us with exclusive pre-order schwag.... :P

Holy shit, I have this. Didn't even know it was rare. Picked it up at the Pokemon Trading Card Game World Championships some years back. May have to sell this baby now.

I also have this. The PAL version, that is. Which is basically dirt cheap now :(

Hopefully the same won't happen to PAL Xenoblade, though I'm not getting my hopes up.

The main feature. Save copying theory/DIY
I saw a few posts here and I recall in the OT someone saying that somebody confirmed the clock fix by transferring their Japanese save to the EU release.

You'll need one of the homebrew programs that dumps saves. The reason for this being we need the save in its unencrypted form. An example game here. We copy the save. It is put in the directory \0001000052453550 (this is the hex title ID* in hex with some other numbers before it) with the following files:
banner.bin
game1.bin
game2.bin
game3.bin
system.bin
Possibly all we need to do for the US version is (helps if we have a US save too) put it in a directory called \0001000052453545 (ideally we overwrite all but banner.bin or if that doesn't work we overwrite less and less files until it works) and hope save format changes and/or checksums don't crucify us (game will not show any saves if it does)...which they shouldn't as we've not modified any checksums and the save structure should remain identical (though I assume Xenoblade must use a structure like above since the Japanese save supposedly worked and I'd think having the extra option of voice acting language would break things otherwise).

The reason behind 50 and 45 is hexidecimal. 50=P 45=E
*-Printed on back of the box.

Hope that helped. When the time comes throw a bone in the homebrew thread or somewhere.

Not if plastic wrap is involved!
Gamestop is involved. That won't be a problem :(

Ahahahahahahah holy crap. I was just scrolling down my facebook newsfeed this morning and saw the words "Mechons" and was like "Nah, none of my friends are playing this game". So I scroll back to it and see it's Nintendo's official Facebook. At this point, I think they're just playing with people, like large corporations are wont to do (give me a break, I was just waking up).
I thought this:
ohdear.jpg

Danm you Microsoft. I was thinking Samus had defected along with Rareware...
They got hacked apparently; at least hackers had a sense of humor

I'll probably rebuy it, but it would be amazing if Nintendo offered that Monado Archives artbook that Nintendo France gave out as a pre-order incentive
It was first 1000 to register. Looked like it was fully translated into French too which is crazy given its print run being limited to 1000.

Woah, NoA is really reworking this title, just look at the new logo!

They're making up for Advance Wars (check out Days of Ruin/Dark Conflict, EU got a shiny new logo while NOA just took the old one and painted it brown).

Yep, the Wii's Panzer Dragoon Saga. Believe!
So they'll be giving away disc 1 with Nintendo Power? (Sega Saturn Magazine here in the UK had disc 1 of that game as the free disc once)

I also have this. The PAL version, that is. Which is basically dirt cheap now :(
I have that [Pokemon Box] in both PAL and NTSC
-J
form (Colosseum Mega Pak version with no manual :( and GBA-GCN link cable one which came with this). I don't think either were valuble to start with (even though the PAL one is arguably harder to get ahold of than the NTSC-U one)

Wow, lot of pages in a few hours.

So stoked this is getting a NA release. Planned on getting a PAL Wii next summer to play but now I can shelve that!

So you hated it for having 100% optional content you could have skipped? Neat...

The fetch quests are just extra XP while I'm out exploring the beautiful areas anyway to me.

They don't try (and so fail) to be anything else. Especially since you don't have to return them. Explore, find NPC, get quest, explore, quest complete!

There were plenty more involved quests that had their plot strings and you did have to return to the NPCs and get more involved too. Also optional though!

I didn't find the characters and AI offensive myself, they seemed to use the right skills, and the special chains where you choose their actions happen often.

I only didn't like that even though you can control people other than Shulk if you want, and they're lots of fun, the optimal way is to control him most of the time.

The beauty of the areas was its own reward. That said there were cool things to find like optional mini bosses and the like. JRPGs don't tend to have much beyond exploring.

Like, they don't have puzzles and stuff ike that like Zelda games. You're just passing through areas to complete your journey and goals. I like it that way. I hate mazes too.

Why shouldn't I judge it for it's optional content too? It's part of the package. It's like judging DQ9 only for the main plot. In both cases the optional stuff is greater than the actual main quest and I think it's fair to judge it.

You do have to returns quests often. The one you don't returns are the find X enemies loot but as soon as it involves bringing the loot to another NPC or finding another NPC it becomes tedious.

They had the choice of making 500 quests with generic repeated text, objectives and loot or to devise 20 good ones with actual unique dungeons and NPCs and chose the first one. I'm more a fan of the second option. It's not like it's actually difficult to offer lot of quests and have unique interesting dialogues or objectives for it. New Vegas pulled this out fairly well with unique dialogues, areas and objectives for sidequests.

I felt exploring was much more rewarding in a game like FFXII than Xenoblade. FFXII is full of terrible design decisions like Xenoblade (bazaar, loots, random chests) but side areas are actually areas/dungeons with uniquely designed bosses and you can actually find worthwhile stuff exploring these areas (weapons, spells, items). The game doesn't have huge empty areas to explore but at least they designed entirely optional areas to explore with useful stuff to loot from them.

I'm not saying my opinion is the only right one, I was replying to the guy implying that if you hate this game something is wrong with you.

So basically..... there's a chance I can use my PAL save on my US copy??

I wasn't saying it like exactly ;) Your points are well argued. I just think that newbies in this thread shouldn't be scared off from playing this game based on your impressions.

ahahaha so they actually did it?

Grats to the US people. It's an AMAZING game, one of the best JRPGs in many years. Enjoy!

It's cool that the game is coming out in North America finally. However, Gamestop exclusive means I can't get it. I suppose it doesn't matter since I have the EU version, but I'd like a copy that doesn't require me to have the Homebrew channel on my system. Would have been better if they'd include Amazon as well. <sigh>

You can buy it from Nintendo's site as well.
