Just wondering, what made Xenoblade such a step up in quality for MonolithSoft after Disaster? Were there any major changes in the company? Or was it just a result of better funding and development time?
Disaster could've been a random drop given that Xenosaga 3 and Baten Kaitos Origin were way, WAY better than their prequels, or it was just too far out of Monolith's comfort zone. Could also be a bunch of mismanagement in that particular case that wasn't relevant for other titles.

For once, they have enough time to finish their game.

More dev time (the first time they've ever been able to make the game they want without significant cuts), guidance from Nintendo SPD staff (acting as editors) and they were working in a genre that they were familiar with with Xenoblade (Disaster DOC was their first ever non RPG game and it was about as far from an RPG as you can get. It was also a pretty good first attempt at an action game at that!)

If dumb A.I. is the problem, wouldn't something like FFXII's gambit system be the solution? Other than better A.I. of course...

I didn't like having to micromanage all that a.i. It's enough of a chore to do that in King of Colosseum. I'm going to give FFXII another shot now that I know you can play the game with manual control over all characters. I only played the original demo.

Personally I'd rather have a 5 character party with full control over everyone. One of the many reasons I liked Lost Odyssey.

I make a comedy news series on youtube and my latest episode is Xenoblade being announced for America. Just thought I would share...: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddJ2xGqz4-U

This has to be the quickest video I ever made. It was announced less than 36 hours and I made the video and edited and uploaded it pretty quickly. Even though my videos suck I'm proud to have done it that quickly lol. Also if you watch it then be sure to watch the bloopers (at the end of video.)

Anywayz: gonna preorder this if I can tomorrow when I pick up MK7 at Gamestop. Looking forward to the game.

Edit: yay secondapps posting is working again.

Wrong. Xenosaga Episode I is the best game in the Xenosaga series and the best game Monolithsoft has ever made. Monado is a pretty big disappointment so far.

Maybe it's their best game if you like watching Greensleeves played to a speechless, black and white cutscene.

I had fun with XS1 but recognized it wasn't that great of an RPG, while XS3 was more of a legitimately well designed RPG as I recall. XS2 was a failed experiment and is best left forgotten.

Narrative and all could be a different story, but after XS2 I'm focusing only on gameplay here for which game's best.

I'm...kind of stunned by this development, really. I was dead-set resigned to my conclusion that Xenoblade would never come to America, that they just didn't think there was enough audience here of the right demographics for them to bother with it.

Seems odd that this was brought up with no real splash or pomp behind it, but hell, I'll take it. All of this praise for what sounds to be an incredibly lengthy and meaty RPG experience. It's something that I've missed as a Wii gamer for basically this entire generation unless you want to count Monster Hunter.

Oh well, I imported this from Europe when it came out and will probably pass on the NoA release for the simple fact they drug their feet. NoA are complete morons by waiting until APRIL to release it. The damn thing came out in Europe 4 months ago and will have been out 8 months by the time they release it here.

Also: XS3 generally had nice, fast battles. XS1's dragged a bit, and XS2 was INITIALLY better but promptly became one of the worst offender for long battles I've ever endured.

First I find out Xenoblade is coming to the US, and then I notice Kotaku and Destructoid actually crediting their sources. It must be opposite day!

For me, the most incredible part of the story.

On-topic, I will hold my nose and buy this, because I've wanted to play it ever since I heard about it (but not enough to mod my Wii).

I seriously have to question what will be the point of even releasing Xenoblade come next year. This is a niche game in today's market and a very large portion of its potential buyers have already imported, meaning the US sales will likely be weak. Making future games of that kind even less likely to be localized.

And once again with The Last Story, Nintendo is encouraging North Americans toward soft-modding their Wiis, which leads to more piracy and even less sales.

How does this even work? Didn't NoA still have to make the game properly regionalized for the USA?
Missed this earlier, but... yeah, what the hell do you mean? Redubbing? It's in English and we have some very popular stuff with British VA, even from Japan like Demon's Souls/Dark Souls, so that shouldn't be a problem. They may iron out some subtitles/non-voice acted dialogue, but there's plenty of time for that. If you mean something like regional coding however... uhh, that's piss easy for Nintendo themselves to change, I don't doubt.

It's a niche game that reliably sold out across Europe and actually had a lot of people riling up support for here, at worst I figure it'll reach 100k quickly enough. That, and Demon's Souls was in a similar situation with the English version being available 8 months ahead of the US version, and you didn't even need to mod the PS3 to play that. Despite that it still hit Greatest Hits status here and may well be Atlus's single best selling US published title ever, though you could counter with the fact the 8 month gap didn't include the holiday season when people may just give up. Still, when games like Demon's Souls can do really well despite seeming doomed to niche irrelevance I can't be outright pessiistic about how Xenoblade will do.

What? How much localizing do they have to do? Everything is already done.

They just have to make it playable on ntsc consoles. I'm not sure, but how difficult can this be?

It's not going to sell 100k. It'll be lucky to get 10k.
Maybe it'll be 50k instead, but 10k?. Don't be absurd, that's the territory of niche portable games that major sites takes weeks or months to cover, if they ever do so. Xenoblade was a big enough deal IMPORT REVIEWS were going up on many sites and NoA's silence spurned a campaign to bring it here that caught attention all over the place. That, and didn't I just point out it was managing to sell out across Europe?

Xenoblade is the number 3 on most anticipated on gamestop.com. That's pretty cool. I think people are seriously underestimating demand if they think this will only sell 10k. I don't know that it'll do 100k, but this was a top seller on Amazon with no release date a few months ago. Rainfall did all the marketing for Nintendo.

In one day.

Amazing.

Too bad it's people like you that keep The Last Story and Pandora's Tower from getting released here.

Preorder completed.

Are you seriously trying to guilt trip him for not buying the same game twice? Not everybody has money to spend on a second copy of a game they already own.

I'm not trying to guilt trip anyone. Doing that would be accusing someone for not buying Sin & Punishment 2 because it arrived in the EU first.

Just don't be surprised if we don't get anymore games like it released here in the US because of it, as stupid as it may sound.

Only someone on some magical shit could enjoy that dreck, so I understand why you say that.

Ace, you're my hero. <3

I'm gonna be really confused whether or not to import Last Story and Pandora's Tower now.... :/ I imagine NoA will wait to see if this limited Xenoblade release is successful before announcing the other two titles.... but maybe they just aren't coming? It's a tricky situation because I don't like having the PAL copy when a domestic one is coming... But also, I want to encourage Nintendo to release them by having the PAL versions do well..... argh. confusing. ><

Play the waiting game until E3. We have time.
They may choose to do more limited releases, especially if this does well.
