The PlayStation Vita In 2011-2012

Ok, it IS sold out on HMV Co jp, just tried adding to cart, I could do it yesterday, but now it just says that it's sold out, so looks like they did have stock available when some of us ordered, that's good!

wow. With the current exchange rate, the standard wifi Vita in japan is the equivalent of £215 including sales tax @5%. so for the sake of a couple of months, might just wait. But if I see one in the shops I might not be able to resist..

edit: and the games are £40 each!

Isn't that cheaper than the UK price? It should be 230GBP here on launch.

What happens if there is anything wrong with an imported PS Vita from Japan? Like dead pixels or something like that. Do you have to send it all the way back to Japan or is it possible to get it under warranty in your own country?

barely cheaper. When it was more like 200Y to the pound it was a much better situation. Although Japan has never been cheap for gaming. Add in postage etc and you'll be paying a fair premium.

Most likely have to send it back, Playstation goods have never had international warranties.

I hate that I live in West Virginia and knowing I will never get to experience one of these events that companies hold, lol. I never get early impressions of anything.

I wonder if they'll expand it. I guess I'm technically in the chicago market, but the Gurnee mall (where I played it) it about an hour away from Chicago, so I don't know if they're sticking to big markets or not.

Went to the Mall Event at Discovery Hills today north of Atlanta and had a great time there with some friends.

I was impressed by how light the Vita is to hold and the overall ergonomics feel improved from the PSP-3000 which is a big plus for me. The d-pad is better than I was expecting (the all on one rocker design works really well for fighting games like Reality Fighters) and the buttons feel nicer than the ones on the PSP-Go while being about the same size. The thumbsticks feel nice under the thumb but aren't quite as tall or as grippy as I'd like them to be. The UI is fast and responsive as is the touch screen and everything feels nice and works without a pause or hitch.

Uncharted had the impressive production values that you would expect but the touch controls in it are not my cup of tea. I understand why they are there and fortunately most (but not all) of them are optional but you will have to put up with a few of them if you buy it. It's 50/50 for me right now on the purchase. On the one hand it's Uncharted and those are always a good time. But on the other hand I just finished Uncharted 3 and have my doubts that Golden Abyss will really be able to measure up.

Wipeout 2048 was one of the highlights of the event for me (along with LBP) as it manages to look nearly as good as the PS3 version while introducing some new features to the "Wipeout HD" formula. I played a track called"Metro" something and it zoomed and dipped in and around a city park and surrounding areas and actually had some nature in it that showed off an excellent color palette. It also had alternate routes to discover and a wider, slightly friendlier track design than the stuff in Wipeout HD. I did try out the link mode with a PS3 racing a friend on Chengou Project and it worked flawlessly with zero lag. I am very pleased to report that the Vita can replicate (and maybe exceed) the Wipeout HD experience in a portable format. Day 1 buy for me for sure.

Hot Shots Golf was satisfying to play and looked good on the Vita. I'm not a big golf fan but I could see enjoying this game in short bursts and it should please anyone who's a Hot Shots fan. Probably not a purchase for me but don't take that as any kind of statement on the game's quality because the game itself is slick.

Little Big Planet Vita was the star of today's show for me. I'm not a huge fan of the series but I have always appreciated the ingenuity and creativity that you could show through it. Nowhere is that more on display than with the Vita version. Having front and rear touch ability as well as built in gyro allows new methods for control and interaction that were previously not available. I built a staircase for Sackboy by "pushing" blocks out from the back of the Vita and then pushing them back in the from the front when I no longer needed them. I used my finger to slide a block to keep a door open for Sackboy so he could exit an area. And I used the gyroscope to send Sackboy down a short zipline across a gap. All in one little level. I smiled the whole time because while I was still playing Little Big Planet I was interacting with my Sackboy in a whole new and fresh way and it felt great. If the finished product is as good as the demo levels I played then the Vita version will smoke the console versions as the one to have. Day 1 purchase for sure.

Sound Shapes was creative and game me happy flashbacks to Everyday Shooter but in a more relaxed, platforming way. Probably a purchase depending on the price. Modnation Racers was Modnation with some new interactivity. I'm not a Modnation fan so I didn't spend much time with it but it does seem promising. Reality Fighters was good for some hilarity between my friends and I as I fought as a demented looking Santa Claus using a boxing style while my friend looked like a female Big Foot. The game controls and looks much better than I was expecting and might be worth a pickup if it's cheap. Little Deviants was also better than I was expecting but definitely more of a technology showcase and minigame collection than anything else.

All in all I had a great time at the event and came away with a new appreciation for the Vita. It's going to be a long wait until mid February because I can't wait to own one for myself.

Very good impressions, How long did you play with the OS?
So do you think build Quality was up to 60GB PS3/PSP1000 level?
I really wished Gravity was there so you could tell us what you thought of that.
Thanks for Sharing, I do hope I could go myself.

I didn't play with the OS much. Just to launch and suspend applications and move some icons around. The "page tearing" effect where you swipe from top right to bottom left is pretty nifty though.

Build quality was as good or better than either of the PSP's I own (PSP-3000 and a PSP Go). I find a direct comparison to a 60GB PS3 sort of difficult because they are such different machines. The Vita is very light but also feels very solid. When you hold it there's no jiggling or looseness involved and all of the ports and buttons are well secured and fit snugly. The buttons are small but superior in feel and operation to either of the my PSP's as are the thumbsticks and d-pad. The machine is just better made for gaming and once you put your hands on it for a few minutes you'll see what I mean. I legitimately think that this is the first handheld system that I could play for hours on end without discomfort so that's exciting.

thanks for the reply! I'm excited, I haven't been this hyped for a system since PS2, I can't wait. I'll play my PSP backlog first and then buy new games later!

Those two are bad. Very bad.

the $600 launch PS3 had such a high build quality. It felt and looked worth $600.

Maybe the jet engine sound and 2 years to YLOD colored my perception of it.
Jet engine sound? My 60gb was extremely quiet right up until the YLOD. The actual build quality of the case and the materials used was extremely high, though, even when taking some of the internal flaws into account.

I just reserved two Vitas (Vitae?) for pickup on release day. All anyone has left are the 3G model, unfortunately, but that's OK. The game I'm most hyped for, Wipeout 2048, is being delayed until January, so I might just sell the one that I'd been planning to make my own!

I agree with the other posters who like the pleasant sturdy feel of the Vita. The screen didn't wow me, but the buttons felt solid.

Matmanx1, was the track you played "Metropia"? That's the one I'm most eager to see, as it's supposed to be in a futuristic Kyoto. The one in 2207 is pure sci-fi architecture, but the one in the near future should have most of today's Kyoto skyline included, which itself is a sometimes-beautiful, sometimes-hideous mishmash of 21st century moderinty going all the way back to the wood and lacquer of the 1600s.

Dunan, whereabouts do you live?

Dunan, whereabouts do you live?

I'm in Tokyo, within easy cycling distance of Akihabara, so I had no problem making my reservation!

I used to live near Kyoto back during my undergrad days, which is why I (1) love the city so much, and (2) can't wait to see how Wipeout handles it.

Are you based in Japan too?

Ah, I gotcha :D I'm in Osaka and have two extra wifi reservations, trying to decide what I'm going to do with them, haha.

Weird things happening with the RAM usage

It seems very faithful to the first Tenchu 1 and Tenchu 2.

But the graphics are closer to PSP than Vita, I hope the game is still in a very alpha state.

It's gonna be out in the wild in about 9 days man. I'm pretty sure what you're seeing is what your getting.

I don't mind since I had fun with the PSP version as flawed as it was. If the graphics look like they do in that picture and the frame rate is solid then I still have no problems buying it day one.

Won't have a problem with PSP-like graphics but smooth framerate. If this is Tenchu without being called Tenchu, I'm sold on it.

The hands on say that the first level mission was to murder a evil merchant armed with a gun.

If I remember correctly, that is basically the first mission of the first Tenchu.

I'm more interested in the draw distance than in the framerate, but the videos that I saw seems ok.

Also, the maps on those screens are very similar to mission 1 and mission... ¿3? of Tenchu.

Well, the PSP game was much lower poly and very grainy. The higher resolution, cleaner image quality, larger draw distance, and smooth framerate will help. On the Vita screen it will look MUCH nicer than the PSP even if it's fairly simple for a Vita title.

This was Shinobido on PSP...

Still, early shots had full on filtering and AA usage :-(

character poly seems as low poly as psp character model, but at least we got much improved environment this time.
Uhh, they aren't great, but the character models are still much more detailed than the PSP game.

Graphics on Shinobido 2 are fine - not really getting it for the eye candy, but for good old fashion thrilling ninja gameplay.

Oh, and if you get a chance, try to get your hands on Tenchu 3 (PS2), best ninja game ever made, hands down. Brilliant level design, awesome stealth mechanics, multiple characters, and a fuck-awesome soundtrack.

Sometimes I think people's memories are attached to how they thought it look the first time the played it. lol

This game doesn't look amazing, but it's far better than PSP stuff.

When I'm saying PSP graphics I'm not saying Shinobido PSP graphics. Shinobido PSP was an awful game (at least, technically).

This Shinobido 2 graphics are more in line with Peace Walker and similar games.

Peace Walker was one of the most advanced games on the PSP but it ran at a low framerate and was very dithered. For a game from a company that produced some of the ugliest visuals on PSP, I'd say this isn't too bad. :P

O_O

I consider the first mission of Tenchu 1 my favorite single level from any game. The first time I fired it up and realized I could grapple anywhere and while the level was small it was completely open to me... wow what a feeling. Nothing else in 1 or 2 gave me quite the thrill that first level did

Can not wait for this game
