I shit you not.

After making its original announcement at this year's E3, OnLive has released a new update to its Android and iOS app to bring PC-quality high-definition gameplay to a wide range of smartphones, media players and tablet, including the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and even the Kindle Fire.

Available on Thursday, December 8, the new app will add complete gameplay support for any game offered on the service, which includes some of the richest, most graphically intensive titles available, such as Batman Arkham City, L.A. Noire, Assassin's Creed: Revelations and more.

While the previous version of the app only allowed users to peruse the OnLive marketplace and access the social features of the service, now they can play any game, any time they have access to Wi-Fi or even 3G and 4G LTE connections with a minimum speed of just 1Mbps. For HD resolutions, OnLive recommends users have connection speeds of anywhere between 3Mbps and 5Mbps.

In order to make the experience possible, OnLive has adapted over 25 titles to support a new on-screen overlay that replicates the analog sticks and buttons you would normally find on a controller. Titles that support this feature include DiRT 3, Virtua Tennis 2009, Lara Croft and the Guardians of Light and more.

Additionally, the company partnered with publishers to bring new native touchscreen controls to the OnLive versions of their titles. Five titles will be adapted for mobile controls initially, including Defense Grid Gold and most notably, L.A. Noire.

Unlike the OnLive-produced overlay implemented in other titles, Rockstar is custom tailoring the version of L.A. Noire available on the service to incorporate gesture controls, on-screen cues and more. When investigating crime scenes, users will be able to swipe across the screen to rotate bodies and tap to pick up objects.

For those who'd prefer a more traditional gaming experience, OnLive has produced a new Universal Controller that pairs with tablets and smartphones via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and other wireless standards. When combined with an iOS or Android device running the OnLive app, the Universal Controller provides complete dual analog controls, triggers, and action buttons with low-latency performance.

The controller can also be used with the Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Mac or OnLive's MicroConsole using a USB dongle. Up to four Universal Controllers can be paired with a single USB transmitter.

The app will be free and is expected to be released on the Android Market and the iTunes App Store tomorrow. Users can order the Universal Controller for $49.99.

I... wow. That's just incredible

What's so hard to believe? I thought that's the plan from the start, put it on everything that can stream video... Since that's what it's doing...

Wonder if the controller will be any good... Does anyone have their console thingie, and how are the controllers on that?

The technology is definitely impressive, but I think a lot of games will be basically unplayable without that wireless controller. I can't imagine playing a game like this:

I'm really curious to see what that unique OnLive-exclusive touchscreen interface for LA Noire is, though.

I know, but it's the thought that in theory, somebody can play Batman: Arkham City on their iPad. Even pair a controller with it and play it properly.

Also, it doesn't seem to be mentioned in the press release, but according to the onlive website, everyone who downloads the iOS/Android app gets Lego Batman for free.

If I can play a new PC game, on my Touchpad running Android, using a bluetooth PS3 controller....fuck, I'm there.

Wait, it's only their controller? Anyone have any screenshots of it?

While I still don't like the prospect of paying full price just to have a game on the cloud, as a rental service this could be awesome.

Great idea.

Kindle Fire support, too? Yay!

edit: LA Noire sounds good.

Touch is better suited for that game than gamepad support, anyway

Compression artefacts, input lag, non-customization of hardware and settings, and non-ownership of the products you pay for.

I have no interest whatsoever in this phenomenon. But good for those who need it.

Okay

My laptop broke down and I was only able to play games through OnLive for a few months before I got a replacement desktop. It's not perfect but it is works.

edit: I guess I could have played on the 360 or PS3 but the thought honestly didn't cross my mind, at the time.

Sounds stupid.

Are you somewhere it would be convenient to prop up the tablet and start using a gamepad? Then you could probably just fire up the game on a console or PC and enjoy good graphics and no lag.

Are you somewhere it wouldn't be convenient to prop up the tablet and start using a gamepad? Well I guess the game's not going to play very well then.

Wasn't OnLive supposed to be sitting on some revolutionary wifi tech? Was that just bullshit?

I have a w7 tablet, I should try the current client out soon. Totally forgot about OnLive for a while now

Paying full price for a game you'll never own?
He's probably right. Games have gotten more expensive, you don't really own them anymore so much as license them, they're laggy, the framerate sucks, controls are put in the backseat to make more room for cutscenes. Yeah, sure, OnLive is a window into the terrible future of mainstream gaming.

Can I plug in my 360 gamepad to my android tablet and use it, or will I have to use their special one?

I'd probably only try something like this if it was offered on top of the conventional distribution & running models, not go Cloud only... And even then probably just try a few point & click type games, RPGs, strategy games and adventures and such, in bed on iPad2 and then forget it exists...

It sounds like you have to use their special one. It's shouldn't concern you too much, though, as it is pretty good (outside of the additional cost).

This was inevitable the moment HTC announced they were investing $40mil into OnLive. Well, it was inevitable before that too, but my explanation sounds cooler.

Gamepad is required for some games, which isn't an issue for me. Works as you'd expect, and as an Onlive fan, I love it.

As with any streaming service, your mileage varies by connection speed -- we tested OnLive's latest while pulling down 10Mbps over AT&T U-Verse out of San Jose, California, neatly outpacing the service's recommended 5+Mbps connection. Our results? Mixed. While connected over WiFi, the our OnLive equipped iPad didn't stumble, but it didn't shine as brightly as its desktop and MicroConsole counterparts. Hardwired to the source, our MicroConsole delivers a crisp, 1080p image with only a hint of compression, and our OnLive equipped notebooks (both Mac and PC) didn't lag far behind their dedicated compadre over WiFi.

The iPad however occasionally jumped from crystal clear to early-YouTube fuzzy, but most often found a satisfactory middle ground that erred on the clear end.

I just tried the free trail of LEGO Batman on my Droid 3. Apart from it suffering from touchscreen controls, it ran pretty damn smooth. The problem for me personally is that there is no way in hell I would buy the controller to play the games on my phone. If I went that extra mile, I would be better off playing the game on my laptop. It would admittedly be cool to play Assassin's Creed or Deus Ex:HR on my phone, but there's just legitimate reason for me to do so.

I'll likely end up purchasing that controller in the near future though, so I'd might play a game on my phone just for the lulz.

EDIT: It would be hilarious if they could get OnLive on the 3DS. A man can dream...

Am I missing something, or is the same gaming media who has been telling us that dedicated handhelds are almost dead because people don't want console-style games on small screens now telling us that playing console (actually PC) games like Batman Arkham City on a letterboxed iPad screen that you have sitting in a stand or propped up by pillows is the future?

You're not missing anything.

Damn my Galaxy 10.1 doesn't have usb. Wonder how that wireless connects. Its a bit fuzzy right now on their page with the description. So far though. Highly impressed even as is. Hope its bluetooth for tablets too. Ah looks like it.

OnLive is impressive and all but I just can't seem to think its worth using majority of my monthly bandwidth for this service. 15 hours of gameplay is around 35GB of data. I was shocked when I checked the traffic logs on my router.

Netflix alone is already taxing my monthly allowance as it is. Throwing OnLive in the mix will surely upset my internet service provider. lol

Still going to give this app a shot though. Maybe play a bit of Saints Row 3 on my iPhone. :)
