Composer Hans Zimmer Talks About Crowd Sourcing Chants for the Score of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

HANS ZIMMER: Well, before I started on Sherlock, I had an idea for Dark Knight. I said to Chris [Nolan], “Would it be okay if I got the most outrageous orchestra together and tried this experimental thing?” It involved chanting and all sorts of stuff. And, if I decided that it was just complete rubbish, then we could just throw it away and nobody would ever mention that Hans went and spent all that money. So, I went off and spent weeks writing it. I recorded the piece, and Chris came by and said, “Well, you’ve done half the movie now.” I said, “Well, I don’t think that’s quite true.” But, I think I figured out my cornerstone to the thing.

I’m hellishly ambitious on that. The chant became a very complicated thing because I wanted hundreds of thousands of voices, and it’s not so easy to get hundreds of thousands of voices. So, we Twittered and we posted on the internet, for people who wanted to be part of it. It seemed like an interesting thing. We’ve created this world, over these last two movies, and somehow I think the audience and the fans have been part of this world. We do keep them in mind. And I thought it would be something nice, if our audiences could actually be part of the making of the movie and be participants in this. So, we’ve got this website up, www.ujam.com, where you can go on and be part of it. It was fantastic. The first Tweet that went out just melted our server because we had tens of thousands of people a second, trying to get onto the site.

You always want to create a sound that nobody has ever heard, but I think, this time, we might be doing that. As a musician, I think about what environment things are recorded in. Now, you have hundreds of thousands of voices, all recorded in their own individual environment. Up until now, that’s been impossible to do. There’s a lot of people doing a lot of editing, as well.

I hope there's a taste of it in the Prologue...which I can't see.

Any chance that they'll release info/pictures on Bane's mask design? I mean, the current model probably wasn't the very first one. I'm curious to see what kind of other designs they had.
They'd have to be really bad if they got rejected in favour of the current one.

I'd reckon it was a put things on and take things off method they went about with the mask design. There's an interview somewhere that describes the designer's process of coming up with the mask. And that she wanted it to have fang-like features, that of a gorilla. I don't think there were any concept designs for Scarecrow, Joker or Two-face in the dvd extras. I remember reading that when Heath and the crew were looking for the Joker's look, Heath already had in mind what he thought Joker should look like and they sort of just went with that.

The Art of The Dark Knight has some of the early concepts of Joker

i wasn't always here in the mountains
once i had a wife, my great love

the prisoners from Arkham Asylum remind me alot of Banes mask... i wonder if that was at all an inspiration

My guess was that it was a respirator of some kind. Almost like life support. Similar to the tropes used in Favreau's IronMan. I image his fiction is that he and the other goons are ex-military/pmc who have been disenfranchised by the Wayne military complex and have sided with Miranda Tate to force a corporate takeover - taking Batman and Wayne out of the business after a near decade of dubious bookkeeping and apparent corporate mismanagement (after all, the rumor is that DKR takes place several years after TDK and features some of the generalized discontent of the OccupyWallstreet movement). That would explain how "the other guys" having Wayne Industry technology and vehicles, as seen in unofficial production pictures. Essentially, a boardroom-splinter cell (later to be revealed a ra's al ghul-linked scheme) directs a private military company of miniBatmans fighting Wayne/Batman for control of an industry and the soul of Gotham. All conjecture, of course. I'll eat my hat if that is the plot.

I have a feeling this movie is gonna stink. The dark knight bordered on the edge of stinkiness too, with corny shit like that court scene 'If you wanna kill me I suggest you buy American' Woooooh!! *the crowd goes wild*

Does anyone have any pics of Christian Bale from his thinness (Machinist) - to Chubby (Before he was fit in BB) to being fit (During BB)?

That line was dumb. Dont they pat down everyone before they enter the court? Another scene I dislike is when Batman is zooming in his batpod right after it dislodges from his batmobile, and then it cuts to a scene of kids going playing 'pew pew' with handgun gestures and suddenly there's an explosion presumably from an object being fired on by the batpod, and batman zooms past them. It was a completely useless scene and should've been left in the editing room.

Well the whole point of the glock or carbon fibre guns is that they pass through metal detectors, I guess you are supposed to assume thats what they had at the court room.

Cmon all the bat vehicle scenes require a major leap of faith.

Pff, jeez. It was a light moment It was fine.

Anybody know if the trailer debuting with Sherlock Holmes 2 is going to be posted online dec. 16th? (non-bootleg, obviously)

I think it's supposed to be released around Christmas.

Which makes sense, since the TDK trailer went online a week after its theatrical release too.

Some obsessive trivia for all of you (don't highlight unless you're aware of the basic scenario the prologue supposedly depicts; otherwise, this contains no spoilers or details.):

1.The Dark Knight Rises Prologue allegedly depicts a plane hijacking.

2.It premieres before Mission Impossible 4.

3.Mission Impossible 2 also began with a plane hijacking.

4.Hans Zimmer scores both scenes.

Therefore..

Hans Zimmer's music for his second hijacking scene will premiere before a sequel to the movie which contained the music for his first hijacking scene.

DKR viral begins

Two WikiLeaks styled documents were sent to Wired and Empire today, however they’re not real life uncovered CIA memos, but instead fictional ones giving us clues about the upcoming Nolan film The Dark Knight Rises. We won’t spoil the fun of reading the memos for yourself, but a brief vague summary is that federal agents are seeking a missing person with potentially dangerous special knowledge and skills. Check out the two scans after below.

Likely the following Monday. That's how it went down with every trailer for TDK. Inception as well, IIRC.

Thanks for the intel guys!

Gonna see the prologue next week sunday, I'm secretly hoping the whole plane sequence info is false just so that I can be surprised with what Nolan has in store for us. But then again, even if it is true, it'll probably be awesome!

Oh yeah, and MI4 should be cool too. Really curious to see how Brad Bird is with live-action.

So what do we suspect this is leading upto?

They started the viral campaign very late for this one.

And this doctor has something to do with
Bane
I imagine?

No the doctor has something to do with
the weapon that Bane uses

trailer attached to Sherlock Holmes 2 is 2 minutes and 3 seconds. The film will also have the first trailer for Bryan Singer's Jack the Giant Killer and Tom Cruise's Rock of Ages!
