The Last of Us (Naughty Dog): Hold One Second

I think there's a reason they are focusing on Ellie. She'll be the lead.
I hope she is. She makes for a nice change from the usual video game protagonists.

I could also see this maybe supporting co-op which could be cool, although I hope that they make it optional if they do decide to go that way.

If it weren't for Naughty Dog, I'd be fucking hating this game.

My complaints:

Why such a serious teaser for "sporeheads"? Why riots, quarantine zones, biohazard checks at graves, if people were turning into friggin monsters?!.
Why the newspaper talks about deadly fungi, if it seems like it isn't that deadly.

Their fungi growth has caps, which is a distinct type of those on ants and insects (cordyceps). They even have different types of dispersion.
If they infect people, I sure hope it's not by biting, or else the dude touching it barehands should be enough already.
Why are they running around like fucking leapers?!

But on the other hand:

-It takes up to 50 years for such growth of vegetation. So both have been surviving since they were babies, that's kinda cool.
-The Road (fighting another humans for survival) and I am Legend vibe is cool. Hopefully the game will be more of a survival horror than a let's run or shoot mushheads. And pirates.
-It's Naughty Dog.

in engine trailer...

The trailer still looks better than that.

My handcannon is ready for fungus headshots.

But god DAYMN this came totally from the left field. Naughty Dog already announcing a new game? Who knew.

You know, I could really be into this if they do it right. The idea of a zombie game where focus is placed more on survival than combat is appealing to me. If they make it challenging to fight one zombie, as shown in the trailer, and you aren't able to just take on 50 of them at a time I think it would be really neat. I'm sure the story will be good at least.

The list goes on and on. Zombies are a de facto "craze" at the moment. Every developer and their mother either makes the game about zombies or at least includes a mode which has zombies in it at some point.

rofl, most of those games are spread out by like a year or two each, and you can pretty make the exact same argument about every other genre.

What's the source on this one.

For in-engine, that's insane.

No, it's pre-rendered. When will you guys realize that pre-rendered and rendered "in-engine" is the same damn thing? You can boost texture resolution to any size, have DX11-level shaders, boost shadow resolution, any kind of anti-aliasing, etc.

Most games don't do this not because they can't, but because they don't want to remove character customization and other features that wouldn't work with pre-rendered cinematics.

Certainly didn't expect ND to make a new IP. That said, zombies and post-apocalyptic setting doesn't interest me at all. Will pass on this.

In a game set on earth with human leads you only really have the choice between humans, zombies or zombie-like creatures, robots or aliens though. No matter what a developer goes with its played-out.

Name them? I'm not trying to be a dick, just genuinely curious about how people are feeling so fatigued with zombies. I know Dead Island came out this year, but that's all I can think of recently.

I really hope so. It'd be great to have a female lead in a big game like this.
I was going to say Dead Island, Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Killing Floor, Zombie Nation, Red Nation, zombie mode for
Red Dead Redemption
, Dead Space (different sort of zombies), Dead Space 2, Call of Duty zombie mode, zombie mode for Borderlands, Dead Rising, Dead Rising 2, Dead Rising 3, Dead Nation, Dead Island, Blood Drive, Burn Zombie Burn, Atom Zombie Smasher...

Some of those were from several years ago, and some of those are not too popular. I just feel like there have been many zombie games, some of which feature co-op, so I can understand why people might not want another game in the same vein. I though Left 4 Dead was pretty good but didn't care for Left 4 Dead 2 much.

HOWEVER, all that said, Naughty Dog apparently does good games so they may make this different enough to be neat.

I've brought none of those. Why? Because they're all uninteresting.

"Zombies" are not a genre; it's a theme. And you absolutely cannot make the same argument for any other theme, unless you stretch the term to mean "shooting" or something.

Similarly, I only listed a scant segment of the zombie games. A full list of zombie games can easily be found online and there are often dozens per year.

That's amazing but doesn't change the point at all?

Yes, but if you played uncharted 3, the actual game looks pretty much identical to the cutscenes.

You're forgetting monsters that are essentially zombies. Alan Wake and even Gears of War 3 had "slow moving brainless humans" which require the same tactics to defeat that a traditional zombie would.

I agree. It's just old. I was never really into zombies in the first place so this craze just turns me off a lot of games.

I'm confident in ND's ability to make this more than a zombie game. First of all, it's not a zombie game in that it's a fungus. I'm expecting a functional reason to this which should differentiate the gameplay from traditional zombie games. Secondly, the first encounter in the trailer has a guy with a hood up who doesn't seem to have a fungus for a head. What does this mean? Hopefully that there are other survivors and the fight is now as much about getting by as it is fungus-zombie killing. Finally, it looks beautiful and an emotional bond will hopefully play a big part in the game.

Uncharted 3's cutscenes were rendered "in engine" as well. Don't expect it to look that good while playing.

If it weren't for Naughty Dog, I'd be fucking hating this game.

My complaints:

How the hell can you hate a game based off of seeing a 2 minute trailer when it won't be released for a year or so.

Come on people.

Why such a serious teaser for "sporeheads"? Why riots, quarantine zones, biohazard checks at graves, if people were turning into friggin monsters?!.

And to answer your other questions.
it's a video game dude

Not that I disagree with you, I said it right away. Except on the textures, it'll all end up being in-game assets like in U1/U2/U3.

I'm sick of zombies, but I keep buyin games about em cthey here are some really good products. One thing you gotta give this fad at least is its mechanics and possibilities are actually being used well.

I remember when Yahtzee at Zero Punctuation was talking about Red Dead Redemption's addition of Zombies and pondered "What is it with developers and zombies these days? Do they get a tax break when they make a zombie game?"

I agree. It's just old. I was never really into zombies in the first place so this craze just turns me off a lot of games.

Now you're really stretching, cause if that's your definition of zombies, then the creatures in this trailer don't match that stereotype at all and your whole argument has fallen apart.

These fools can't even design a different character? They're stuck in Uncharted mode now or something. I thought it was a dark and serious Uncharted 4 for a second when I saw the dude.

But really zombies are sooo boring these days. And these guys won't make them any more interesting.

Wait and see on this one.

The things that have severely lacked in zombie-style games are lack of worthwhile characters, lack of polish, and usually very one-note. I don't see how anyone can deny that if any developer can rectify every single one of those issues and more, it's Naughty Dog.

Not sure why some people are so afraid to be hyped, or so quick to dismiss. Enjoy it :P

Yeah, those are no zombies, they are infected.

Yes, but if you played uncharted 3, the actual game looks pretty much identical to the cutscenes.

Yeah from a non-cinematic perspective where the camera doesn't zoom in on the character's faces.

In the end what I'm saying is that it's smoke and mirrors, and eventually ND will have to let go off doing pre-rendered cinematics because it sacrifices gameplay possibilities. Don't expect real-time clothing/body damage over time, etc., in The Last of Us if the game has pre-rendered cinematics. It only works in games that are linear at absolutely all levels.

On a PS3?

Not that I disagree with you, I said it right away. Except on the textures, it'll all end up being in-game assets like in U1/U2/U3.

They are rendered on a PC, not on PS3. Games are made on PCs, not on consoles:p The engine/editor is running on PCs, and they rendered the cinematics on PCs.

just different lighting situation + 1 year of work for the comparison :)

but u3 has the best engine for a console game so it's not that surprising IMHO

I think people put too much emphasize on game engines for visuals. Games don't just look good because of game engines. There's no easy button to make games pretty. That model of the girl is so incredibly detailed. Just the hair and skin looks better than any game i've seen.
