I wish that more western artists would branch out and create very whimsical, vibrant images like a lot of the ones posted in this thread.
I feel that, generally, what we do over here (US) is made more generic due to a fixation on creating something that emulates what we perceive as "real" instead of embracing colorful fantasies.

I never knew LSD was so popular in Japan.
It's more a symptom I would say. Early D&D art is a lot more vibrant and cartoony than what came later.It's something I noticed as well.
WRPGs are especially guilty of this. I can't decide if the influence of D&D is just that pervasive or if D&D itself is a symptom of whatever is shackling western art.
