NHL December |OT| The Team You Cheer For is Not Good Compared To Our Team

I have a good feeling about tonight'sgame.

Same, it's the best part about Christmas can't wait to see Gallagher and Bealieau play provided Bealieau makes it.

Beaulieau is going to get cut. Gallagher will be first or second line though and Bournival with be 4th line. So 2 Habs prospects will be there.

Even though I wished this would happen to Crosby, I know how you feel.

Does Crosby get to play if his brain has regressed to that of a 12 year old?

The hell is wrong with both of you? Sure you have rivalries and root against other teams players but actually WANTING a guy injured / being happy his career might be over?

And don't give me this shit that everyone was cool with what happened to Savard either. Because a player from the Bruins was concussed you wished a career ending injury on someone else? What are you 4 years old?

Beaulieau is on the line, could go either way, and yea a consecutive win tonight would be really awesome, as sad as it sounds. Would like to see Leblanc / Cammy / Kaberle get some points.

Leblanc is playing with Cammy and Pleks. He has great vision so hopefully Cammy gets himself into some good shooting areas and Louis gets him the puck.

:( kinda surprising retirement home detroit is at the bottom, and the buffalo fans on here made it sound like they've had it a lot worse....this is from the beginning of the season to the beginning of december

I'm a bit embarrassed but I don't understand the whole man-games lost stat.

Also, I'm sure theres a thread but could anyone christmas up my avatar? 'tis the season, you know? Maybe just a santa hat? Nothing over the top for sir Matt Read.

Its your team's cumulative total of games lost to injury. If Pronger misses 40 games, Giroux 20, and Bryz 10, and no one else misses a single game, then the Flyers would have 70 man games lost to injury.

Montreal has led or been in the Top 3 in this category for each of the past 3 seasons :_(

Some people are just so warped they can only appreciate players on their team, they'd be delighted if everyone else died in a plane crash. It's a segment of fandom that's always childish, and sometimes crosses the line into being perverse.

yeah, i know what you mean.

Parise is out for THREE MONTHS as a result of knee surgery. The news keeps getting better for hockey fans.

So you are saying what happened to Savard was cool? Classless.

Of course I can argue that. Bruins lost their best player. I don't actively want Crosby hurt. Two years ago? Yeah I wanted him popped in the mouth.

That's probably why. We were fine the first month and a half. The whole injury bug hit Buffalo when Myers went down with a broken wrist. I believe that was right before Thanksgiving.

Edit - Just went through the roster. By my count, the Sabres have lost 34 man games in December so far (almost 50% of the total for the two months prior):

Tyler Myers - 5
Mike Weber - 5
Brad Boyes - 5
Patrick Kaleta - 4
Paul Gaustad - 3
Jordan Leopold - 3
Cody McCormick - 3
Nathan Gerbe - 3
Corey Tropp - 2
Ryan Miller - 1

The sheer number of players hurt over the span of 5 games is astounding to me.

Shifting into Leafs mode, they need a great start against the Canes tonight. Hopefully put them away early and gain some confidence.

The primary media coverage the NHL has been receiving has been concussion talk in the last couple years. Somehow it has made enough of you believe every hit, punch, shot, needs to be dissected to a fine point. Most of you are hypocrites as well. Bashing Shanahan for being "inconsistent" while a couple years ago bashed Campbell for being too "consistent". A player receiving a two game vacation isn't going to change the landscape of how the game is played.

The NHL can do something about this. Remove the hits and the fights. That way everyone can be happy. Problem is they are going to lose the most important thing, money. Sidney Crosby lying dead on the ice is minor in comparison to the NHL protecting their shield. NHL knows that older hockey fans, newer hockey fans from the same demographic that UFC is pulling in are tuning in primarily for this very specific brand of hockey.

At this point I would say most of you are hockey fans, not NHL fans. If you have a "Soccer Mom" mentality, great. There is college hockey for you to watch. If you feel that strongly against watching this brand of hockey, choose another. There are plenty of other sports and variants of ice hockey out there for you.

This is by no means me saying "If he dies, he dies". Most of you should have a good idea of what you are watching. NHL is the top brand in the world when it comes to hockey. Players come here first. They know the risks they have to take and the rewards that come with it. No different from a person joining the police force or John Doe taking a job at the overnight 7/11 which has been robbed at gunpoint twenty times in the last half year. Like them the players could and can just walk away from the sport. We should protect them better, but by no means is the NHL going to lose money.

I've been following Sid so closely because when he becomes a UFA real soon, Double-B would have made a huge push for him.

Lupul - Crosby - Kessel

*drool*

When's he an UFA?

His contract is up at the end of NEXT season, so 2012-2013. Double-B could have snapped him up to a 5-6 year deal which would have put him in a Leafs uniform during our 100th anniversary season. Knowing Sid and his sense of history and respect for the league, he'd want to be a Leaf during that most important of times. Imagine him bringing the Cup to Toronto? Holy crap his legend would be cemented.

They'll lose money in the short term. That's pretty clear. Crosby is legitimately worth millions, but you do have a valid point. I always wonder what the people in this thread were saying back in the 90's when they saw hits like the ones we see today. Somehow everyone seems to act like they're brand new, but they're really not. It really seems like a case of "If you hear it enough you'll believe it." Sports writers love to create a story, and typically don't know much about hockey until they're assigned to cover it. Throw those two things together and you have a pretty horrible combination.

Crosby is worth a ton to the league. He isn't worth more than the league itself. If every team had five Crosbys skating he would kill the league.

Agree with your last point though.

The fun thing is now we can have this discussion every day apparently now.

t0mp, how do you feel about the NHL as a brand right now?

not sure if you're asking me seriously, but even with my favorite player experiencing a concussion, you can't change the game IMO. you take away hitting and fights and you'll lose a ton of fans. I don't even know how I'd react.

And here we go:

Holmgren says Giroux out indefinitely with concussion.

Yep, saw this too. It is officially a concussion. Giroux reported not feeling well today. How the hell do you spin THIS to be a problem with the sport. He got hit by his own damn teammate.

This absolutely BLOWS for the Flyers though. No Pronger, no Giroux, Schenn has been out for almost the whole season making the whole Richards deal almost laughable. This really fucking blows. I guess on the bright side there are the LTIR credits.... expecting a deadline deal now. Flyers have been overachieving for a little while now I've thought. This is obviously going to bring the team down a little. I'm scared we're gonna hit levels of play similar to last March though. I don't know if I can deal with watching that shit again. The timing seems ok though. If we can get healthy by late in the season to make our playoff push then we're right in Laviolette's wheelhouse. He knows how to get the team motivated in those situations particularly well.

I am. Just kind of jesting at the absurdity that it has become almost a daily thing in the NHL.

NHL Water Cooler Talk

Guy1: So, hey. How is your team doing?
Guy2: Concussed.
Guy1: OMG, mine too!

I cannot fathom why Simmonds or whatever went to jump over Giroux...

Your best player is on the ice and you try and jump over him, throw on the brakes and don't be a fucking idiot. For crying out loud.

I pray to the hockey gods that giroux recovers well from a concussion and doesn't get into a situation like crosby. fuck.

do you know how fast that all happened? it's not like he was on his hands and knees and simmonds could anticipate it down the ice. he dove right in front of him as he was skating near full speed if I recall.

Kessel for Art Ross!
yep, now he has a shot. with giroux playing on the top line he was bound to win it.

I mean the dude played on the third line last year and still got 80+ pts. I can't even remember who his line mates were.

I got my hopes up yesterday when they said whiplash. I should have known. fucking holmgren

Whelp, so much for "they're just being overly cautious". Sorry Flyers fans

Kinda interesting (to me) that there seems to be no correlation between a team's CHIP and their place in the standings.

Wings could be facing a Crosby, Malkin, and Staal-less Pens team tonight. Hopefully they don't think they can coast to an easy victory tonight.
