PlayStation Vita Japanese Launch Thread. "APOCALYPTIC!" says concerned Nuclear Muffin

"Truly locked away in Japan only forever!"

Thank you Muffin for this

This whole thing smells of "I'm an expert". It's something similar.
Picking up Muffin's explosion and changing words, like it has been done for years with the "I'm an expert" meme.

A new meme has born, the "APOCALYPTIC SCENARIO".

"That means that if a game is released in Japan only, it will be COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE TO EVEN IMPORT IT!!!"

Why wouldnt it be possible to import a Vita game from Japan even if the store was IP locked?

See Apocalyptic Scenario post about Vita being region locked.
Check Nuclear Muffin profile.
Check threads created.
See a lot of 3DS threads started by Nuclear Muffin.
None of them seems to point to any apocalyptic scenario.

...

Does anyone know what PSP titles will be available for DL on the PSN Store? I saw a video of a guy playing Peace Walker on the Japanese Vita, so Peace Walker will be available right?

I saw a Japanese list of games before, but if there is a EU/NA list then that would be nice.

People like to joke about this, but it really does suck when a game is more or less impossible to import. I'd like to play the Super Robot Wars games released for Japanese mobile phones, for example, but it's impossible unless I moved to Japan and opened a cell phone plan with the relevant carrier.

Wait a fucking second. The Vita PSN game store is IP LOCKED?! FFFFFUUUUUUCCCCKKKK!!!

Holy shit! That's a disaster! The worst possible case scenario! That means that if a game is released in Japan only, it will be COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE TO EVEN IMPORT IT!!! Truly locked away in Japan only forever!

Not to mention that us folk who live in Europe and have US PS1 games on their PS3/PSP won't be able to play them on the Vita.

How the hell does this not have it's own thread yet? That's an apocalyptic scenario!

Well, well, well. I think we have a new meme to replace "SE just shot themselves in the foot" one.

So I know we're all being amused by Nuclear Muffin's comment but on a serious note, I find it troubling that the developer can forcefully turn off your network while you're playing their game. (e.g. Uncharted:GA and AoD). Hopefully this is a launch thing and more developers don't follow suite.

Something cannot become a meme if you declare it to be a meme before its proper spread and use.

It just becomes an inside joke if you do.

Almost every PSP title on PSN can be played on Vita. That list you saw was for titles where owning a UMD copy would net you a discount on the PSN version.

Maybe Sony can sell this "Truly locked away in Japan only forever!" technology to eroge devs who want to make sure that information about their sordid products never reaches the Western media.

I'm guessing the thought process of the developers was something like: "well, since it's a single player game there is no point in keeping wifi on in the background and having it turn off will make the battery last longer"

From what I saw from the RSG stream the handheld went back online once you switched out of the game and moved around in the OS.

I don't really see the huge issue here. It's not like games that will use online functionality are going to disable online functionality while in game.

The problem is that you're completely off of PSN while you're playing those games. I'd like my friends to know that I'm online.

"My Vita's battery died. :("

"It's to avoid spoilers."

"How come Vita doesn't have a Monster Hunter game?"

"It's to avoid spoilers."

"Why Nuclear has to react in such irrational ways?"

"It's to avoid spoilers"

"Oooooooooh, ok"

Late to the party.
What's up with the title change?

It's to avoid spoilers.

Any confirmation on the battery life?

Yes, there is battery life.

I'm dying here.

How about someone sells me a Vita and pays all the related costs (shipping, customs)?

No?

Mkay. :(

So is the store really region locked? Because that would be a massive bummer/possible deal-breaker for me. Not because I import, but I set up my account when I lived in the States, and have since moved.

no - at the moment it's unknown. I got a "not available in your region" and thought "uh oh, IP locked?"

but no - the issue is there's no VITA specific store for anywhere other than Japan. It also sounds like either a) PSP games from US/Europe haven't been "Vita injected" yet to let you play them on the unit, or a FW update is required on the vita so that content manager allows you to move them across.

That's not quite true yet. I can't play my digital PSP copies of R-Type Tactics 2 and Dangan Ronpa on my Vita.

This latter issue is more concerning to me. I thought the recent 4.0 update was to support vita, but you still can't transfer them?

Preparing them for vita shouldn't be needed as some users will already have them on their ps3s (albeit as bubbles)

Pretty sure 3G online gaming isn't supported from what I've heard.

Nah, surely not? Otherwise what's the point of paying for the service - just to update your status? You already can't download anythin larger than 20MB over 3g, so you'd be limited to just browsing psn store and web browsing (which you could just use your smartphone for)

Btw, anyone having problems typing brackets in the vita browser? Anytime I try and type an open bracket it automatically closes it too

The latency in 3G is terrible. We're taking 500 milliseconds at best, which is completely unsuitable for most online games. There are many iOS and Android games with multiplayer which require a wifi connection for playing.

That makes sense, thanks for the update.

it's up to developer, but I think they know playing shooter, fighting game, or any action game is not feasible on 3g network. games like Hot Shot Golf where it's slower and turn based support online play just fine.

A list? As in, only some games qualify for the UMD discount thing? YOU CALL THIS BC!?!

APOCALYPSE NOW

Does Hot Shots just have asynchronous multiplayer or can you play a round actually with someone?

APOCALYPSE NOW

This was known already. Some publishers haven't opted to do it.

Now this makes me worried. If they region block the Playstation Store, that means I can't purchase download versions of any new releases :/

I wouldn't worry until late February. If it's still like this then yeah be worried!

3G gaming is indeed supported by some game modes. I remember RR and Musou do.

or get a vpn.

If I buy a Japanese vita.

Will I be able to use my US account to buy Us games?

At the same time use Japanese carts?

WILL I BE OKAY?

All the information that's currently available points to yes. If you want to buy DLC + other shit from the JP store that's a different story though.
