Pikachu's Winter Vacation: Christmas Night:

MuE3El.png

The Pokeymen are left to their own devices while their trainers go out in order to get stuff for Christmas eve. Squirtle and Bulbasaur start WRECKING SHIT UP, and it's up to Pikachu to keep everything safe, particularly due to Togepi's propensity to get into trouble.

This is fairly standard as far as Christmas specials go. They even get to ruin Christmas, only to come up with a fairly logical but cute solution to the problem. Thus the Pokeymen learn that the holiday is not about the food or the material possession, but rather spending time with those they love.

Pikachu's Winter Vacation: Kanga Games:

The Pokeymen discover a Brave New World after waiting for a chilly blizzard to die out.

Yeah, that's the plot.

This episode is more similar to the Pikachu shorts from the movies. There's not heart-warming message beyond a faint tinge at guardian-child bonds; it's all wacky hijinx... on ice. Can't say I cared too much about it even with the Meowth cameo (he should have had a more central role to at least give some sense of conflict to the script). There's a moment when shit gets real and it looks like the Pokeymen will be fucked up forever, but all is well at the end. Regardless, it is a fun ten minutes if you were into the playful episodes from the animu where Ash and company where absent.

Well, I'm not the kind of person who takes media consumption beyond media consumption anyway. Knowing that is more important than whether or not I still qualify for this term or that.

*Sniff* It's over. I came into this one with no expectations, but will go into the inevitable third season with incredibly high ones, probably to its detriment... but I'll sob about that then. This season of the show was just so damn good. Everything , and I mean EVERYTHING was better: the art/animation, writing, and in that; comedic timing, and pacing--Everything, and I can't exactly say if all of that can really be attributed to a change in director, but I'm going to go ahead and do that since I'm worn out, and its easier to than to not: Praise Atsushi Ootsuki, that bawse.

Bakemonogatari 1

Shaft knows how to satisfy my fetish for visual insanity.

There's lots of things I could say about this episode, but one thing I particularly liked is how the dialogue mixing places you aurally inside a character's head at times. Sometimes this is used to distinguish thoughts from speech, but other times it's used to compliment a visual perspective from a character's eyes, and that effect is really neat.

Hosanna, you are now officially part of the bakebros.

SHAFT bro! Bakemonogatari was good stuff.

The first episode of Bakemonogatari is good, just like the first episodes of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei or Maria+Holic S1.
Shame about the follow-ups.

your loss

I don't set very many rules for entertainment I will choose to consume (I am, after all, an anime fan), but one ironclad rule is I will not keep watching something that bores me. So no, it's not "my loss", I'll be watching something that doesn't bore me instead.

That should be posted in the "animated gifs as art" thread.

Senjougahara makes Bakemono.

Plus it's interesting. But mostly Senjougahara.

Nonono, with something like this, it is very much your loss!
Nah, failure to care, not for everyone etc. etc.

She does seem the most interesting out of the characters presented so far. Oshino has some potential, but I can't get a read on him yet.

Honestly, while I like the air of supernatural oddities, I feel disconnected from the characters and narrative so can't bring myself to be invested in them as such, but Shaft makes things interesting by being Shaft.

It's Kanbaru that makes Bakemono.

And while literally everybody else in the show takes a step back in Nise, It's Kanbaru who gets upgraded to total boss. Can't wait.

K-ON! 1

Those who are upset that I'm watching and enjoying Bakemonogatari might be pleased to know that I'm also watching and enjoying this. (And vice versa, I guess.)

This is another show where I don't care deeply about the narrative or characters - Yui in particular is rather annoying - but KyoAni makes things interesting by being KyoAni. The character animation and transitions are exceptionally polished and make for a pleasant, if shallow, watch. I'm disappointed they cheapened out on the keyboard animation though.

I'm upset by both. Go back to watching Yu Yu Hakusho .
Watch whatever you want.

Can't do that until I get back to my Blu-rays and nice monitor next month. But I'm thinking about starting the original Hunter X Hunter soon instead, if I can manage to juggle all these shows at once.

They cheap out on animating the girls playing their instruments throughout the whole series. It's one relatively small blemish on what is otherwise The Moescension of animes, though.

At least the other instruments do get some animation time. When the music club plays towards the end of the episode, Yui's head is carefully positioned to obscure the keyboard:

In the closeups after this shot, the keyboard is obscured while Tsumugi's hands do the typical "move up and down in one place even though that has no resemblance to what's actually being played" thing. As a pianist, this bothers me more than it would most people.

To be fair,
they barely even play their instruments, anyway. And a lot of times they do it, the camera focuses on the stone turtle instead.

KyoAni has such skilled animators that I wish they would invest some effort into properly portraying musical performance. Of course, I knew before starting that the show doesn't really care about that, sadly.

oh my god what is wrong with your face
Think of the fun fun times that relationship would entail!

And so a formula is established. Not that I dislike episodic series where there's an episode-by-episode goal. The cast is very colourful and thus it should provide great comedy and insight into Ahiru and Mitho's characters.

Btw, Rue is majestic. <3

its so batshit crazy

Ben-to

Ending had some nice speeches, but did they really have to skip the fight :(? So annoying, especially when
Satou apparently won.
I'd be up for another season if possible.

This was a weird show and very inconsistent quality wise. Sometimes it was fuckawesome like episode 10 and sometimes it was just dumb/boring. It alternated between a poor man's Ikkitousen and a legitimate battle comedy with a ridiculous excuse premise. Character's weren't very original, but at least they were fun and the plot was unimportant for the most part. In the end, it really is just junk food. Onani Master Kurosawa proves you can have a ridiculous premise and come out with a legitimately amazing story, but this isn't one of them.

Well, you know, it's Christmas? So you have to watch something festive!

I haven't actually watched this movie more than once, which is odd for a Satoshi Kon film. I suppose when I watched it a few years ago I was disappointed that it wasn't like all his other movies. Now, I appreciate that it doesn't explore the same idea as most of his other works. It's refreshing.

Anyway, I really enjoyed the movie this time around, it's a very polished, very entertaining movie. What's surprising is that there's a certain grittiness to the piece, because our three heroes are homeless, but at that same time it's still full of extremely unlikely 'Christmas Miracles'.

At the time I don't think I really appreciated the amazing, expressive and exaggerated character animation. It's pretty amazing to see these characters bellow at each other.
