I don't know, pretty much everyone who enters this thread looking for recommendations gets a list of things to watch that hopefully they'll enjoy, regardless of what things they've admitted to liking because chances are, someone here likes those shows as well.
Well the most common recommendation seems to be School Days.

Edit: Wow, beaten.

Ano Hana had many issues with its writing, but having plot holes wasn't actually one of them; Every thread it started, it pretty much ended.

I wasn't saying there were plot holes; I meant that the individual subplots never felt like they amounted to anything significant in the larger context of the narrative.
In particular, Menma's constantly saying "Maybe this is my wish? Or maybe this?", but none of the offered alternatives are, not even the fireworks which has a big buildup to no real climax. Nothing significant to that main plotline happens until the very final episode.

We've been trying to tell everyone for a while that Madhouse is dead. It's just the way of things :(

Hey, hey, the new Hunter X Hunter may be a mediocre project, but Chihayafuru is still alive and kicking.

The subplots detracted from the development of the main cast, which is my biggest complaint about the series. They were unnecessary to a short story (11 episodes worth) that already had a cast with little to no development. The melodrama simply didn't help when there was little reason to care in the first place about their plights.

We Still Don't Know Why They Wasted Several Episodes on That Stupid
Fireworks Subplot

Turn A Gundam. Almost all the OVAs (08th, War in the Pocket, Unicorn) are good. For modern stuff, SEED was kind of okay, Destiny was not. 00 S1 was pretty decent, S2 was not. Not really a huge Gundam guy myself but I've enjoyed the shorter stuff more in general than the longer series.

Don't watch G Gundam.

You know, this post was doing so well until it reached the last line. G Gundam is a lot of fun and quite different to a lot of the earlier works, which doesn't make it bad. I can understand why some haven't seen the light, they don't appreciate super robot tropes, which is perfectly acceptable.

Oh, my mistake. I took your saying that the threads went never went anywhere to mean that they were left open.
And while I agree with you on the idea that the carrot chasing didn't make for the most interesting of tales after a point, you have me wondering on the idea of subplot itself, lol. Even in its easily sectioned chunks, the whole of the 'Menma's wish' aka friendship plot would actually be the A story, the focal line of plot, while something like Jintan's job hunting, or Handlebars & the bishie's romance would be a B or C story.
Though... In this case, I'm not at all sure if that's the correct structuring.

e: Nope. You're right, I was wrong in combining
Menma's wish & The friendship. The friendship plot would actually be story A, while the Menma's wish as a whole would be a B story, a subplot. Things are clearing up!
Fucking Anoana.

See, now this is what true SHOUNEN HAATO is about. There's no better and noble cause for fighting than food!

More sick moe, fighting, hot-blooded standoffs, and best of all, only two seconds of Shiraume!

Show was pretty rad, it's probably too much to expect a second season unfortunately.

So appears to be consensus forming about this show now that it's over. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears to be the case that the show started strong, dipped in the 2nd half and found it's feet again by the time of the finale.

New characters were introduced and their story took precedent over the fight structure the show initially set up. I liked the short change of pace and the new characters, but I am not all that surprised other people were resistant to them.

okay, i'm getting gundam 1-3, 0080, 08th MS team and stardust memory. that should keep me busy for a while, then i'll look into that alternate universe stuff later. getting into such an insanely prolific series blind is such a hassle. thanks lafiel.

Oh dear God, I only hope you can survive that journey :(
Fate/Zero 13

Nice troll cliffhanger. Three months is quite a while to wait.

Also every scene with Rider in it is amazing.

If they push all the other characters to the background (well, not all of them, more like most of them) and just call it the Rider & Waver Show I'd be pretty happy.
Since Fate zero is a prequel can you watch it without knowing anything about Fate Stay Night?
Despite some thoroughly bizarre claims from ANN, yes you can.
Bakemonogatari 1

Shaft knows how to satisfy my fetish for visual insanity.

There's lots of things I could say about this episode, but one thing I particularly liked is how the dialogue mixing places you aurally inside a character's head at times. Sometimes this is used to distinguish thoughts from speech, but other times it's used to compliment a visual perspective from a character's eyes, and that effect is really neat.
Welcome to the fold. Now you can read my extended essay on the subject! WARNING, panties inside: http://scenesofdespair.tumblr.com/post/1329205820/whats-in-a-panty-shot-apart-from-underwear

It recovered a bit, but I wouldn't say it ended particularly strong. The show lost momentum and focus and even when it went back to its original premise of fights over discounted food, it wasn't really that good. The first 6 episodes were decent, but after that the show never really bounced back. I wouldn't watch another season of it.

They amounted to worthless subplots in the end by only bringing in even more needless melodrama.

Lol, though to be fair, it was actually the melodrama that they set out to make,
each event actually closing with tensions worse, till they could resolve it all in that infodump of a climax
. They did fulfill what they set out to do in that regard. Whether or not it pulled at anybody's heartstrings is another matter.

I would argue even the melodrama from the resulting subplots was aimless were it not for how they forcibly integrated that terribly stupid romantic subplot.

K-ON! 1

Those who are upset that I'm watching and enjoying Bakemonogatari might be pleased to know that I'm also watching and enjoying this. (And vice versa, I guess.)
That's an odd pair to be watching at once, although I suppose both works have been labelled as creepy otkau-pandering trash (not incorrectly, in places).
I don't set very many rules for entertainment I will choose to consume (I am, after all, an anime fan), but one ironclad rule is I will not keep watching something that bores me. So no, it's not "my loss", I'll be watching something that doesn't bore me instead.

Well that's perfectly valid, even if I personally don't have a problem sitting through stuff that's a bit dull. Still, I think people are referring to the 'glorious' dressing scene at the beginning of episode two. It's certainly a memorable moment.

Agree with everything.

With a little more budget they could've really ended the last episode on a bang but they made good use of what little they had.

As much as I tried to enjoy the last few eps, I just couldn't get over how dumb and terrible Endless Eight was. I think i'm gonna take a break before watching Disappearance.
I kinda want a philosophical talking cat now.

K-ON is as much music animu as the second half of Evangelion is mecha animu.

That... raises my intrigue in Evangelion now.

Animegaf is a vicious bunch that hates the show, so you might be in for a few hate filled posts. Just a warning.

Hate is a strong word, I just didn't like how episodes 2 - 10 (minus Pokemon episode) was just fluff, and felt like a waste of time, this would be a rare case where I'd think a re-telling of the series in movie form would be a lot better.

I was actually planning on watching Ano Hana. Is the main issue with it that it has way too much pointless melodrama?

The problem is that the show keeps running into dead ends without developing the characters so when it's time for the heavy dramatic climax in the end, it's touch and go as to wether you give a shit about the tears being shed or not.

Ga-Rei-Zero 7-12

Oh thank God the blue butterfly guy didn't die. He can continue to create chaos. And dammit Kagura, must you turn on the waterworks every five minutes? Not to mention stand still for so very long when the shit is currently hitting the fan? Relieved to know not everyone on the disposable team was killed off

Overall, pretty good show, but the emotional breakdowns really get tiresome/annoying early on

I dunno how you'll react to disappearance but I loved it, and I got so mad at endless 8 I didn't finish the season and almost swore off anime forever >_>

Overreaction? Maybe. But that was like the most crushing, week after week assault of anime terribleness ever.

I got fatigued of season 2 at the very last episode, and to this day I still haven't watched the last episode of Haruhi season 2.

That E8 crap was certainly crippling.

After I accidentally stumbled upon that fanfiction of Poppo
having to rape all the Super Peace Busters to fulfill Menma's wish
, I just couldn't be
sad at the end of the show
anymore because that's all I would think about.

My decision to watch everything in one night is now justified.

Does it appear to you that Sunrise actually care about the show?
None at all. With those sales numbers, I doubt very much. Definitely not enough to force a change of staff or a significant departure from what they've already planned.
