The PlayStation Vita In 2011-2012

Essential purchases when buying a Vita.

a) A memory card
b) Uncharted Golden Abyss (this game is really stunning, a triple AAA title packed onto a little cartridge)
c) A screen protector (this thing is a finger print magnet)

:D

I need to get a case for the Vita too I think, I have no where to keep it atm except in it's retail box.

A lot of people have been mentioning awkward shooting controls in Uncharted, how are you finding it?

I think the mileage here will vary - I find the tilt-sensor aim-adjustment to work very well and I'm far quicker to get headshots then I was with sticks alone on console uncharted. But I can see how some people might not want that extra control.

I think once you get used to it, it's brilliant. You can aim using a combination of right stick and the motion controls, it works really well.

as far as screen protector goes. i thought it was a bit hard to pick up your finger? are there different types? as far as thickness/texture goes?

I went for "I don't want bubbles under mine", don't regret throwing it away yet.

I bought a third party protector that had a cloth, front and back protector. Dont even notice its existence. I had one for my PSP too and after selling it after 5 years, the console screen looked brand new. Always a good investment. The Sony one covers the whole front which I think is even better version than my current "screen only" version.

I don't know why people still use screen protector.
My DS, 2 Psp, ipod 4 and android phone never used them and their screens don't have a single scratch. In some cases fingerprints are visible, but when the device is switched off. You only need to clean it Regularly. You'll skip worse image quality, bubbles and touch screens less sensitive.

BTW, do we have memory card tech specs or benchmarks comparing them to the fastest cards?

Do you know how thick the Sony protector is?

I would like to get the official one as well since it covers more of the front of the device but I'm worried that the protector edge near the buttons will be a crud magnet.

What screen glass is Vita using? Is it gorilla glass or similar, glass or just plastic? Anyway, I never used a screen protector on my PSP, it does has some scratches but all are minor, beats having a piece of plastic on top of it.

I've heard it is plastic. Though I don't know how scratch resistant it is. I plan on getting a screen protector for the Vita until I hear more about different people's experiences. If the consensus is that a protector isn't needed, I'll take it off.

I don't use one on my smartphone or PSP and both are currently scratchless.

I have no idea of the thickness. Mine is thin. I suppose Sony's is very thin too.

About why a protector:
I take good care of my stuff normally and I think this small investment (600 yen) is a small price to pay in case of some possible scratch. And I got the cloth that should have come with the Vita anyways. I really have to say that I don't notice any difficulties in touching or blurry picture. I did install it with care, so no bubbles either. With a glance you don't even notice it's there.

I have the pouch for Vita but I don't always have time to put it in there, and so it rests in my bag with other stuff. My iPhone looks like it has seen life, because it's a daily use item that is handled rough. It has scratches all over and I don't want my Vita to look like that because I will use it a lot. Just my 2 cents.

Natsume usually releases these IIRC.

Supposedly Sony will be showcasing 2 titles at CES. If they're new who knows. If they're new it's probably Call of Dudebro: Mobile Murders and Ascending relevanCy: No One Cares.

Icon Games Entertainment talk about their experience working on 2 PSVita titles:

http://www.icongames.com/our-vita-development-experiences-part-one/

Compared to our past developments, Vita is different in many ways as I believe we have a more realistic prospect of earning a decent level of income from our titles than in the past. Unfortunately on-going Vita development has been difficult as we need to keep putting other titles out to keep some form of income coming in. It is also more than a little scary when we look at some of the products and well-funded teams out there who are working on Vita right now. Sometimes I wake up and think; sh*t – how the hell are we ever going to pull this off!?

Recently, however, development has come on in leaps and bounds. Now while it is true that we still have to submit our Stage Two concept approvals for both Vita titles to Sony, and as of now only one of the games is fully up and running on Vita (we do much of our development on PC), Steve has done such an incredible job with the Vita engine so far. It looks wonderful – finally after years of Wii & PSP development I have proper pixel shaders, normal maps, real-time shadows, bloom, reflections and other effects. At last I feel like a ‘proper’ 3D artist, at last able to utilise the latest shaders and effects to create the sort of environments and detail level that I have long dreamed of.

Just realized this is the same person Patrick Klepek tweeted yesterday who wrote the blog about Nintendo not allowing developers to release sales numbers.

Hope they find more financial success with the Vita then Minis

This seems so crazy to me.

On the one side, it's disappointing to hear about difficulty with the analog sticks in shooting. Hopefully this has more to do with the game than the hardware.

On the other hand it's absolutely crazy to think that the preferred method of aiming is the gryo/motion-tiliting. Not sure if this speaks more to the inadequacies of the analog sticks in this title, or if it speaks more to how good the gyro/motion is on the Vita.

That's a great link and worth the few minutes it takes to read. I also like how he points out that iOS development is a terrifying prospect and not really the answer that many make it out to be for the future of gaming. I don't know what Vita projects they are working on but I hope they turn out well and are successful for them.

In other news, that Gundam screenshot is sexy. Having put more than a few hours lately into Gundam Extreme VS on the PS3 and enjoying it immensely I am really happy to see that title is on the way.

I tried the motion aiming but after playing about half the game with it I decided to turn it off. Sniping felt good, but close quarters and mid range I was used to the console model. I wanted to play it with just the sticks and it's perfectly fine - you really have the choice.

Do you have the ability to use motion aiming just for when you're down the sight?

Probably that Zombie mode that they de-prioritised from the retail launch in addition to more ships and tracks.
Let's hope they follow the Wipeout Pure way. It had really awesome DLC tracks, specially the last ones. And for free!
The zombie mode concept was a great idea, but I wouldn't call it zombie xD

That would cool. Can't wait to start reading some reviews for the western launch stuff. So much better and broad than the Japanese launch set.

That framerate reference makes me wonder if they were able to hit 60? Probably still 30 :(

And I wonder what kind of DLC it will be. Hopefully it's another awesome expansion like Fury and not some overpriced individual tracks and teams.

Edit: Guess I was too slow, but if they had another mode planned maybe that means another big expansion. I doubt we'll see free DLC again though :(

I'm concerned about Wipeout 2048 FPS. The guy mentions it in the interview as a good stuff when talking about the game speed, but the whole interview sounds as PR bullshit.

In the trailer FPS is really bad, let's hope they improved it since this old build. I don't ask for rock solid 60fps, but at least I want stable 30+ FPS without huge drops.
