Gamer Girls Taking A Stand in thought provoking youtube video

if it helps these women at all, the harassment isn't exclusive to them. Playing online with strangers kinda always sucks

I agree with this, but women get a special/creepy sort of harassment we'll never see because we don't have access to their private message inbox and the like.

The only thing we see in the way of harassment is the general/world chat and/or the open mic feed.

Women are not getting harassed and insulted because they are women. they are getting harassed and insulted because too many people aren't really nice people in general and too many enjoy being a dick online.

Women aren't being singled out. Men get harassed and insulted all the time and lets not even get into all the racism.

Those aren't mutually exclusive reasons. Women are getting harassed because they're women AND because people are dicks. Homophobic and racial slurs, on the other hand, are directed at EVERYONE, and aren't necessarily focused on any one group. Women get harassed the moment their voice or gamertag appears.

That's a general internet problem though. I couldn't believe it when a few months ago someone said that female GAFers who post their pics in the "share your pics thread" often get PMs.

We do kinda get singled out, but no more than anyone who sounds like an ethnic minority, effeminate male, young, speech impediment.

If you stand out in any way people online will give you shit. If you act all offended they'll only get worse. I try not to let what people on the internet say about me hurt my feelings. After all pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or fucking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a gamer girl... and give some back.

Plus you see it on Playstation Home. That place is full of creeps lol.

I haven't watched the video, but I'm guessing its target audience are white knights more than girl gamers.

Real girl gamers, from my limited understanding, tend to be busy actually playing games. A lot of times when I've seen a girl on voice mic in an online game, she was there with her guy buddies.

Do you see anything feminine in the way I type or in my avatar or my name? The types that DOES this are the ones that are obnoxious about this problem because they're obvious and obviously wanted the attention.
This doesn't have much to do with female gamers, but I found out (the hard way) that people that type feminine are more likely to be guys.

No, YOU'RE missing the point. Men trash talk other men in regards to the game; the shit talking is always because of something that happens in game.

As soon as a girl talks on XBL, it is almost certain that sexist and frankly horrific language will be used simply because she is there, and she is a she. Not so for men.

I've been trash talked far beyond anything occurring in the game. I've seen sexism, sure, but I've also seen racism, homophobia, hatred toward different religions, just about anything that anyone can use as an insult. All I'm saying is that this isn't a problem exclusive to females. An asshole is an asshole, and they will use any ammo they can find to ensure that everyone knows they're pathetic scum. Why not start a campaign to stop all of it, instead of stopping it only in one specific category?

yeah you are right. I guess my point is that the real problem playing online is general douchebaggery and less about sexism. yeah people are sexist online, but I think sexism is a symptom of the root problem.

it still sucks either way, though.

For the record, I don't advocate the shit women get online for simply playing a game.

I do however, loathe "gurl gamers."

Racist and homophobic remarks are directed at EVERYONE, they aren't focused on one specific group. The harassment women get online is directed specifically at women. There's a difference.

honestly, though, I think the thing about this video that rubs me the wrong way is the use of terms like "gamer girlz" and "pwned." The message behind the video is a worthy cause.

Anyone in that thread, even guys, who're quoted multiple times over probably get PMs. I'm not trying to imply that gayGAF is disrespectful though. I think straightGAF is probably the more creepy of the PM senders. :I

I've gotten my fair share of kinda weird PMs from guys and I've never even posted my photo on here.

That doesn't make any sense. Insults about gay people are for the purpose of insulting gay people. Same for race and anything else. It doesn't matter how and when you use it, or who the target is. Just the fact that it's said is offensive to the group mentioned.

...debatable. If a guy is told to "suck it bitch" is that female category harassment directed at a male?

You are really going to pretend that never happens to a guy? You are sure? because I've had plenty of people look at my gamercard and notice my black avatar and start hurling racial slurs at me.
I use to be really competitive in counter strike and stopped due to having to deal with kids tossing the nword around constantly and then getting stupid when I tell them I am black and to stop.

This isn't a gender problem. This is a "people are giant dicks for no reason online" problem.

This jew thinks these girls need to harden up. You don't see [insert minority here] starting campaigns after the HALO 2 era and lord knows the girls can't be getting it that bad. Lord knows the idiots that actually spout racist/sexist crap aren't going to spend their time watching this.

I think that's the core issue with internet anonymity and online harassment. Where people cannot be caught, they will tend towards lawlessness.

GAF is typically a very respectful community -- I think so, at least -- towards those who openly identify themselves as females. However, PMs are a sort of untouchable wild frontier protected on the basis of confidentiality between two parties where female GAFfers are bound to be harassed.

..Is this video trolling? It seems like some feminist video trying to be all "I'm female and I play games hoshit!"

I never once cared if a girl played games, but it annoys me when females have to mention it like it's some shocking thing. Those people get on my nerves.

No, when I'm talking about female harassment online, I'm talking about people going on tirades THE MOMENT a girl enters a room or starts talking. Things like "I can't believe this bitch just joined our team. She shouldn't even be playing games. Get back in the kitchen. Make me a sandwich." Those are specific insults unique to the player being female. Calling someone a bitch or a *insert racial/homophobic slur* isn't always uniquely directed toward that person's identity. In my experience, female players get a special kind of harassment nicely packaged just for them.

So fucking what?

You are the problem, not her.

Whore uniform and all that.

I'm a girl gamer. I find this video retarded. If I showed it to the other girls I play games with they would also find it retarded. I used to go to lan parties with a group of girls I met online and none of them were like the uppity chicks in this video.

It depends a lot on the game you're playing. Certain games seem to attract douchebag communities (CoD, Halo). Most of the games I played when I was heavy into online gaming had awesome communities who treated my friends and I awesomely. You could go pubbing at any given time with little to no bullshit even with voice enabled. I got more shit for sounding young then I did for being a girl.

Show up to play the game and not get attention and people will treat you pretty okay. One person in ten might be a douche but he'd find a way to exhibit douche tendencies some other way if you weren't there.

Shit, 1/10? That's MUCH better odds than what a given guy gets from another guy. We are dicks to each other most of the time. lol

I love girls that play games. The more the merrier. I can appreciate a message from anyone appealing to the fucktards to grow up, whether it be about racism, sexism or all the rest of the immature bullshit that floats around gaming culture. I would however encourage people to be more active about contacting Microsoft or Sony moderation teams when they feel they are being harassed online.

Well, it'd be nice if guys didn't act like it was some rare thing, too. "Girls don't play games" is an incredibly commonly-expressed sentiment within enthusiast gaming communities (and by Gamestop clerks, it would seem).

It usually means "girls don't play the games I like" in my experience. Or, alternatively "well, she may play Assasin's Creed and Modern Warfare, but she isn't a real gamer"

And I've seen way too many times somebody come in to a ventrilo or start talking on xbox live with a sterotypically deep african american voice and dialect and the MOMENT they start talking they get racist rants tossed at him. I have a friend who stopped bothering to talk on xbox live years ago because people could just tell he was black somehow and gave him so much crap over it.

I get the same thing when people see my avatar on xbox live or if I say something that makes it known I am black since I guess I don't sound black enough. I've had tons of people go on racist tirades the moment they find out I am black.

This isn't a gender problem. This is a general asshole problem.

Not that it matters to you. Women problems are more important than my complaints to you probably because you know. fuck black people or something I guess because being called an nword doesn't matter when there is a woman being told to go back to the kitchen.

:/

One of the reasons why I don't like to use voice chat because often, whenever I speak with my heavily accented English I'm reminded how much they want me to go back to my side of the river.

That's the fault of women. They more often than not use a male character, as opposed to a girl character.

Guys, stop embarassing me:

I find demographic studies to be really interesting. More and more women are playing games these days. A lot of studies are out there to prove this. Fun Inc.: Why Games are the 21st Century's Most Serious Business is a great book that collects a lot of interesting results of demographic studies throughout the '00s.

One could assume particular types of games are played by more males then females, but I think it's damned foolish to assume girls never, if ever, play video games.

Maybe that's because the circles people usually have when it comes to games and gaming buddies are mostly dominated by males. I know a few females who play the same games I and a few others usually group up to play, and there's never any "oh wow, a female's with us" going on. Maybe my experience with women and vidyamagames is far different than what the video attempts to proclaim that I find it to be troll-worthy. Declaring yourself to be X and liking games is almost always the first flag that causes people to start trolling you.

It's their fault that they choose to be a male character since being a female character brings precisely the sort of unwelcome attention that this thread is about? I'm not following here.

Just so you understand, even there are guys are from small corners of the world do not follow the trend of what's going on in this world or close gaming communities or even the INTERNETS like GAF. Imagine some dude from middle america in the countryside playing a game. Of course never in his wildest imagination there's a girl that'd be interested in his own thing. Of course the country bumpkin would be taunted for not being aware and just reciprocate his own small mindedness just for free as well.

And it doesn't have to be a country bumpkin, it can be a dude from a very close minded families or religious community. This trend isn't going to change PERIOD.

Yeah it's kinda strange too because every girl I knew growing up played games. It wasn't until the internet that I heard that phrase.

Still I find the "I'm a gamer and a girl! What do you think about that?!" attitude far more detrimental to the cause and completely counter productive.
