Gamer Girls Taking A Stand in thought provoking youtube video

Most male "hardcore" gamers are socially retarded man-children, so it's not surprising that they act like assholes on-line. Mature guys with well developed social skills are out talking to people in the real world, not on xbox live.

It's their fault that they choose to be a male character since being a female character brings precisely the sort of unwelcome attention that this thread is about? I'm not following here.
I think he was addressing the misconception that females don't play games, because they often play as male characters.

I don't necessarily agree, but I think that's what he meant.

But I bet it's just FARMVILLE and the like that GIRLS play.
sarcmark14-16.jpg

Most girls just lie about playing games, because being a gurl gamer is so sexy. Ain't nothing hotter than a woman instructing you to address her only as a genderless being.

Yeah it's kinda strange too because every girl I knew growing up played games. It wasn't until the internet that I heard that phrase.

Still I find the "I'm a gamer and a girl! What do you think about that?!" attitude far more detrimental to the cause and completely counter productive.

It reminds me of the kind of energy that distorted the meaning of the feminist movement in the public eye.

Aside from the issue of assholes being sexist, I find the "I'm a GIRL gamer. Yeah, that's right! A GIRL!" incredibly obnoxious. I've always had a problem with people wanting to be part of a community only to seclude and section themselves off. Like some of those absolute awful girl clans that proclaim girl equality while basically having internet boy servants as part of the groups status quo.

I'm not even opposed to being extra polite to a minority group uncomfortable in a situation, but to those who use their gender as a crutch or leverage to act better than others or get free things (which is something I've witnessed constantly over the years) then fuck them. The sweeping "all girl gamers deserve to be treated more respectfully" just isn't true because not all of them are worthy of it. Some are just awful. Good people should be treated fairly, regardless of gender. I forgot where I was going and am apparently running for office, but I think I said something about my feelings on this.

While I acknowledge such could be the reason (and I originally addressed the conception that girls don't play games :p ), that directly contradicts the trend of G.I.R.L. gamers. It has been noted especially in RPGs girl characters receiving tons of free stuff just for looking like a girl.

Obnoxiously-done video but its main point stands. Then again, the main offenders are probably some 12-year-olds who yell at their own mothers. What's a video gonna do to them?

We do kinda get singled out, but no more than anyone who sounds like an ethnic minority, effeminate male, young, speech impediment.

If you stand out in any way people online will give you shit. If you act all offended they'll only get worse. I try not to let what people on the internet say about me hurt my feelings. After all pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or fucking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a gamer girl... and give some back.
Well that's a gloomy and borderline defeatist outlook. Is this really reflecting your online experience? Daaamn.

I know plenty of mature guys with well developed social skills who talk to people and play on Xbox Live. Nice generalization though.

That's a general internet problem though. I couldn't believe it when a few months ago someone said that female GAFers who post their pics in the "share your pics thread" often get PMs.
I thought it was in a joking manner. I see lines of that nature whenever a chick posts. I thought it was to highlight how pathetic and desperate some individuals are that they need to make contact with a woman--as in, GAFfers--simply because they're a woman, and not actually because they get PMs.

And I was addressing the reason why those women do that. I personally don't care, I always play as female characters and just shrug off whatever people throw at me, but I do know others who are happier when their gender is invisible because once it's known, things really aren't the same no matter how much people want to say it should be.

I want to say it was either Devolution or Aeana who mentioned it in a separate thread a while back.

It is problematic on both sides sometimes. One of my friends, whom i love dearly, i cannot get her to shut the HELL up about the fact that she plays games and loves to flaunt that.

Then my GF, who just wants to play and be left the hell alone. She literally stopped an entire match in Assassins Creed Rev. multiplayer the second she opened her mouth. Funny enough i was playing with her and just laughing at everyone hitting on her.

And I've seen way too many times somebody come in to a ventrilo or start talking on xbox live with a sterotypically deep african american voice and dialect and the MOMENT they start talking they get racist rants tossed at him. I have a friend who stopped bothering to talk on xbox live years ago because people could just tell he was black somehow and gave him so much crap over it.

I get the same thing when people see my avatar on xbox live or if I say something that makes it known I am black since I guess I don't sound black enough. I've had tons of people go on racist tirades the moment they find out I am black.

This isn't a gender problem. This is a general asshole problem.

Not that it matters to you. Women problems are more important than my complaints to you probably because you know. fuck black people or something I guess because being called an nword doesn't matter when there is a woman being told to go back to the kitchen.

:/

Oh grow the fuck up, this thread isn't about you. We're talking about female harassment online ITT, and that's primarily what my post was focused on. I've heard people of all backgrounds called every word in the book, but the comments I listed I've ALWAYS heard directed exclusively towards women.

I don't get that either, maybe because I like both guys and girls. I never got the mentality of "oh, it's a female, so I must get pictures of her!" that men seem to do. The only time I'd ever ask anyone on the internet for a picture is if they wanted to troll me with something and made such an offer. But I'm kind of a clown anyway, so I'm not looking for knockers in pictures. :P

I could only assume the males that dare do that here are ones who barely post, as they should be called out for their comical obsessions.

In my experience, saying that girls don't play games is similar to saying there are no girls on the internet. It's more sort of a joke phrase that everyone knows isn't true because it's circulated by little kids who aren't mature enough to understand gender equality. Most people don't actually mean it when they say it.

That's a very specific type of personality though that you find everywhere, but especially among enthusiast subcultures. Anime, video games, comics, you'll always find men and women who vocally cling to their area of interest as a significant part of their identity so that they can be part of the community.

It's bullshit and doesn't happen. Many men play female characters. Half my characters in WoW are female. Yeah, a few actual girl gamers will get away with shit during raids because some men think they deserve more of a chance, but otherwise, female toons don't get any advantage.

Maybe
if he capslocks the IMPORTANT words you might understand his point better?

I know and and friends with actual females who play games. I'm embarrassed for them. It's funny how some female gamers unintentionally perpetuate a stereotype they claim they want to wash away. The day "gurrrrlll" gamers stop making a point that they're females who play games, people will stop harassing them. Of course, that won't stop everyone from being a complete jerk either. Why does there have to be some kind of distinction, anyway?? Oh, you're a woman who plays games? Okay, and? Cool. Have fun. You have tits and vagina. That doesn't make you any better or worse than me and shouldn't make any kind of difference, especially when it comes to hobby like gaming.

I mean, I've never heard of white gamers, black gamers, or gay gamers. Jesus Christ. Seriously, just the hell up and play your damn games. That goes for everyone. Who gives a flying fuck who or what you are?

But how does that make women different from any other group that's harassed online? The discussion is on whether or not the claim is valid. It's perfectly fair to compare it to the harassment of other minorities as a way of determining if this is truly a unique problem that deserves attention more so than any other mistreatment does.

There are a multitude of reasons, each with significance.

a) despicable harassment
b) being hit on by different people but not to harassment levels
c) just wanting to be left alone like many male gamers
d) role playing a male
e) account sharing with boyfriend

And I listed plenty of comments used towards blacks. But yes I get it doesn't matter when there are women on the internet being insulted.

I totally need to grow up and just get use to being called nigger because that shit doesn't matter. What really matters is women being told get back into the kitchen. That has to be addressed and stopped right away right now. I understand perfectly now.

Things like that are more common once people hear you on Ventrilo. (._. )

Because women are more important. Duh, like totally grow up dude......

It does happen. Just because you didn't see it happen doesn't mean it doesn't happen by and large. For example, it was THE TREND in Maplestory and all the derivative games like it.

While I wouldn't say it's the majority I absolutely know girls who get free stuff and gifts online constantly because they make a point to say they're a girl gamer and some lonely fools bite. Anecdotal and all that but I've witnessed laptops, cameras, mounts, hundreds of dollars, etc. I'm not even saying they're terrible people but I do feel bad for everyone involved. Being a girl in a game is one thing, telling everyone how much of a girl you are hits another chord all together.

Maybe using "hun" a lot or something. I've seen a couple of guys doing that thinking it makes them look like a girl. Otherwise, I dunno either.

To me using 'hun' a lot makes you sound like a gay man, but that could be because my gay best friend in high-school used it all the time...

I do find myself creating female characters more often in games with character creators these days. I mostly chalk that up to "30 something white male holding a gun" fatigue, though, as playing as a female character can provide a break from that. Rolling a hideous looking female Argonian in Skyrim and naming her "Lizard Queen" made the game more enjoyable for me.

That's different than saying female characters get free loot. Female gamers? Sure. But female characters? Not when the majority of those characters are played by males.

Yeah man didn't you know? P/C Cops get weak on the knees when it comes to girl issues.

Ahahahaha! Hahaha. Heh. Heh heh heh hahahahaha

It isn't a secret that those who are attention whores are incredibly annoying. That's pretty much the main stereotype of female gamers. But what do they do...They feed into it, and whatever good they do is undermined by giving themselves unwanted attention from a bunch of assholes.

Basically, ignore the haters and stop making a big deal about being a girl who plays games. Just play your game. No need to put labels on shit.

There are others and more meaningful ways to seek identity. You don't see my making fuss because I'm a "black" gamer. Again, who cares?

Yup. I'm sick and tired of male protagonists, which is why I tend to lean towards creating female characters in games when I get a choice.

I have no idea how you would know this upfront. Most peeps know this through polls/surveys released years after a game launched. If a community assumes most characters are played by men, then the gift-giving phenomenon would not occur. If community assumes girl characters are played by girls, then the gift giving would occur.

They're not, these women just decided to stand up and say 'stop it'. Nothing is stopping other groups of people being specifically targeted and harassed from doing the same
