Gamer Girls Taking A Stand in thought provoking youtube video

It's bullshit and doesn't happen. Many men play female characters. Half my characters in WoW are female. Yeah, a few actual girl gamers will get away with shit during raids because some men think they deserve more of a chance, but otherwise, female toons don't get any advantage.

My main in EverQuest was female. I created the character after taking note of some preferential treatment I saw female characters recieving. I made a female character and I got tons of free gear, attention and invites that I never got playing as a man. Mind you all communication was done through a keyboard.

They're not, these women just decided to stand up and say 'stop it'. Nothing is stopping other groups of people being specifically targeted and harassed from doing the same

Been plenty of times where black gamers in a community have tried to complain about racism. Use to see it every now and then in counter strike. Was usually ignored occasionally had them turn into "black people play the race card too much and causes more racism" crap ironically enough. Women whine and they have tons of white knights to jump in everybody's face wagging their fingers and claim it is a very unique problem only faced by women.

I fully admit there is tons of sexism and I know women get tons of shit for it. But damn is it annoying when some dude pops in saying that no man can know what it is liked to have to deal with assholes online.
As if nobodies problems matter or something.

It was certainly an embarassing video, especially with the name of the person that posted it. Honestly, the name thing is the main issue I have with a lot of girls who play games. For some reason I cannot honestly think of, the vast majority of them put something related to being a girl in their username. They say they want to be known as a gamer, and to stop the "girls can't game" stuff, and then make their online ID sexynerdgirl. Seriously? Isn't the defeating your purpose? I mean, yeah, there are some dumb "macho" names out there too online, but if you took 50 girls and 50 guys that play games online and looked at their ps3/360 usernames, there would be an enormous contrast in usernames that explicitly say what gender they are.

What, attention? Because they don't like being made fun of online by jerks that make fun of everyone else online?

What is even better is that for every one person that makes fun of them online there are probably two people who treats them ultra nice and cool and tries to be their best friend because they are girls. Hardly hear of complaints about that tho.

On theory I agree with the message; but this vid... I don't know, I don't really think it helps, because it seems to try as hard to feed on fantasies as to claim it is trying to dispel them.
"Judge me on my skills, not anything else; oh, btw, I am hot and possibly bi-curious, but it doesn't matter! I don't want you judging me over that! I want to be treated as an equal gamer. Have I told you how sexy I am? Stop judging me on my looks!"
I think the "stand" is better made by simply playing; more Choco Blankas and it will all be resolved.

But how does that make women different from any other group that's harassed online? The discussion is on whether or not the claim is valid. It's perfectly fair to compare it to the harassment of other minorities as a way of determining if this is truly a unique problem that deserves attention more so than any other mistreatment does.

It's different because the specific nature and intensity of vitriol, in addition to being insulting, carries a heavy element of misogyny that other groups do not get nearly as much. The insults I hear aimed towards female gamers are designed to get them to feel like they don't belong in this world and shouldn't be playing in the first place. "This is for men and men only, and you should be doing something else, also, make me a sandwich, and get back in the kitchen." The combination is what makes the comments that much more oppressive, and, I think, noteworthy.

Everyone is "insulted' online, but only one group is so consistently and universally made to feel like their hobby shouldn't belong to them.

but not everyone is consistently made to feel like their hobby shouldn't belong to them.

I have. I know exactly what that feels like.

I have been made to feel like that with such gems like "Why are you even playing this game shouldn't you be out stealing or something?" or "I didn't know you can buy computers with food stamps" or "So where did you steal your pc from? best buy?"

Why does this not count for you? Why is this not noteworthy to you?

I don't like repeating myself. Tell me how that's different from, "You're a dirty Muslim terrorist, go back to the desert." Isn't that also incredibly insulting? Doesn't it have the same intent? It's disgusting and offensive, period. The fact that it happens to women doesn't make them more mistreated than anyone else.

Right girls get misogyny and blacks/jews/whatevers get RACISM

If you are made to feel like this than maybe going someplace with less anonymity, or just ignore those that say this. Being swayed about your hobby by an anonymous insult is ridiculous. And this also happens to everyone else that are "different" online.

And people who aren't white are made to feel less than human. It's not up to you to say which is more hurtful.

Can't everyone just be nice to each other?

On the other hand, I feel like I am part of the problem.
My girlfriend is making me a sandwich right now.

And btw; I hope the argument some of you guys are making aren't "people are assholes to me too and I deal with it, so they should shut up".
The sentiment a minority should be feeling torward the other is compassion not "suck it like I do"; me thinks.

Ugh these videos make me just roll my eyes.

Yes, we females get harassed and yes, it can be annoying. That's the internet for you though. Anonymity makes people such jerks. I find that it goes away the minute you tell them to come up with better insults (if that's the way the conversation is going). I've heard everything from "ur fat" to "slut" etc. It sucks that I and others have to deal with it, but videos like these don't help the cause.

Though I'm not sure what would solve it that wouldn't change the fundamentals of how the internet works (anonymous usage).

As a side note, I'm NintendoGal, not because I thought of "grrl" gaming when I thought the name, but because it was just random one day and I said why the hell not?

Excellent post.

As a female and as a member of an ethnic minority group, I can say I've only had misogynist insults directed at me (and never been targetted because of my ethnicity). Of course I'm just one person, but gamers never seem to care about my race. It's a very different, targetted sort of thing, if that makes sense.

As a point of difference, I'm almost always targetted for my ethnicity in a higher education setting (being made to feel like I don't belong), but never for being female. Gaming just seems to be much more heavily weighted by this whole gender thing.

I like what the video is trying to say cause anyone who has been in an online match while a woman speaks can attest to the abuse they must endure. It will just get trolled to hell and back though, but whatever good for them.

So because it hasn't happened to you then it just doesn't exist?

Once again, I've had these great quotes tossed at me before.
"Why are you even playing this game shouldn't you be out stealing or something?" or "I didn't know you can buy computers with food stamps" or "So where did you steal your pc from? best buy?"

Why do you feel like your sexism is worse than racism directed towards me? Why are your insults more important?

Gurl gamers don't care about black people.

See my edit above. There's something about gaming that seems to have an air of "women don't belong here" that sets it apart from being targetted for my race (don't worry, I get the same comments like you said above, but they aren't specific to gaming (edit: they're more targetted towards stereotypes of my race being poor and not able to afford nice things without stealing/cheating, not gaming in particular, so it hurts in a different way)).

And wasn't the whole recent Jaffe blow-up because some people were telling him how they don't even want blacks playing video games? Racists don't just dislike other races, they don't want them in their community, hobbies, etc. Saying it's different because girls feel like they aren't welcomed isn't much different than blacks not feeling welcome by a group of white people calling them n-words and talking about lynching/hanging. They're both awful.

You feel that way because that's what's happened to you specifically. Victims of racism within gaming would say the same thing you did. That's the point of the insult. If you really feel that way, then it's working.

I've got that specific to gaming. I've felt that whole "black people don't belong here" vibe as well. I use to play counter strike competitively in leagues and tournaments and stopped precisely because I felt like I didn't belong in that community due to all the sorts of insults I've got.

You want and the other guy keep trying to pretend that it is somehow different and we all keep asking you why. I've given specific examples as to how its the same and all I've really got back is told to just grow up and that its different just because.

So you got the feeling due to gender. I got it due to race. Why is this so different?

I didn't think "I'm a GIRL and I play HALO" types of women were real beyond some manufactured organization like the Frag Dolls.

Oh yes. Years back I was apart of a clan that had this mentality. Also used comic book females as their avatars and signatures to prove how girly they were. Never felt comfortable with it and eventually left.

Yes.
Exactly the point I keep trying to get across and I guess failing at it.

This probably just comes down to different social stuff in different countries then. There isn't really a thing here that Māori don't play videogames or somehow don't belong as gamers (but we do get the wider bashing like I said about stealing etc).

I guess from what you guys are saying that there is a heavy thing of black people not belonging specifically as gamers in America?

Not just black guys. Any minority is subject to it, and each one feels similarly victimized. All of it is horrible, all of it is wrong. But no specific one is worse than the other. Why? Because we're all human.

When I used to play Halo 2 regularly one of the group was a real life woman. I kid you not. Also when I used to play TF2 there were two actual women in our group, and I've encountered no less than half a dozen ladies playing Left 4 Dead 2. Such a rare creature does exist.

Not to make excuses for people but many online gamers will just cling to absolutely anything they can to use it against you. From your sex, your race, hell I get trash talked for using grapplers in fighting games. I'm not sure how many are actual racists and sexists most are just stupid kids/teens with no direction and going with the current of other morons online. I never take it personal but I can see why it would make others uncomfortable.

The thing is its' not even just assholes throwing out dickish comments. I was playing SWTOR Yesterday and I do believe I was attempting to make a point about the differing uses of bug vs insect (it's a long story) and one of the other people said something along the lines "scorpions are not insects, take it from someone who has herself a biology degree" I do not quote exactly but the point is that she merely used a female pronoun. This was the end of our friendly little language discussion. For the next couple of minutes were comments along the lines of "omg girl on the internet" or "omg smart girl on the internet" or "omg smart girl playing game i like" while I shook my head and lamented the fact that this was even a thing.

Not being able to use the appropriate pronouns describing yourself for fear of derailing discussion into a shitstorm of inane babble is, not to put too blunt a point on it, retarded.

Oh shit one of the girls I know is in this lol. I can vouch for her being pretty hardcore when it comes to games though, she's even recommended some games to me that I wouldn't have initially considered picking up.

I'm pretty indifferent to the video, I can understand why they made it, but I admit some of the stuff they said was a bit cringe worthy.

Well, it'd be nice if guys didn't act like it was some rare thing, too. "Girls don't play games" is an incredibly commonly-expressed sentiment within enthusiast gaming communities (and by Gamestop clerks, it would seem).

Isn't that true tho? Most girls don't play games, at least in my experience.
I tried to lure every one of my past (and current!) gfs without success (they've always respected my passion tho), I must be very unlucky then.
I don't want some WOW playing/super hardcore gamer gf (I wouldn't mind the latter, but without eccess of course) but it'd be nice to have 'em play some Mario Wii/Kart with me from time to time. But hey, 95% of my male friends don't play games (or they don't anymore) anyway :/ :shrugs:

Most male "hardcore" gamers are socially retarded man-children, so it's not surprising that they act like assholes on-line. Mature guys with well developed social skills are out talking to people in the real world, not on xbox live.

So these girls have no social skills either?

I can't believe I'm doing this, but I'm going to click play.

edit: uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh

The girls I've played games with in the past (and present) are not like this and I thank the world for it. Just play the goddamn game. Shits are gonna be shits either way. Don't get all uppity. What a waste of effort.
