Press Release:

Sonic 4 Episode 2 will be supporting the first Quad-core mobile phone processor for android

SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON - December 30, 2011
SEGA® of America, Inc. and SEGA® Europe Ltd. today announced a New Year's resolution that’s sure to please gamers worldwide: the iconic blue hedgehog will be making his 2D return in Sonic the Hedgehog™ 4 Episode II in 2012. Following the award-winning success of Episode I, which took the world by storm in 2010, Sonic will continue his journey through the epic Sonic 4 saga on Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®Network, and mobile platforms including the App Store, Android Market and Xbox LIVE on Windows Phone 7.

Fans have been eagerly anticipating the next episode in Sonic's new side-scrolling adventure, and SEGA has been listening closely to their feedback. Armed with all-new character animations and a completely reworked physics engine, Episode II will expand the Sonic 4 storyline with new areas to speed through and new challenges to face. For a sneak peek at what’s in store, including the arrival of a certain high-flying, twin-tailed pal who’s sure to be of assistance, check out the all-new teaser trailer here.

"After twenty years in action, it’s clear that Sonic hasn't slowed down one bit," said Haruki Satomi, Senior Vice President of Digital Business at SEGA of America. "The first entry in the Sonic 4 saga was a major success. We’ve listened to the fans and been hard at work making sure we recapture that same spirit of fun in Episode II. We hope the fans will enjoy it."

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode II will support Android mobile devices powered by the NVIDIA® Tegra® mobile processor. It will be available on the Android Market and featured on the Tegra Zone app. In addition, SEGA and NVIDIA are working closely together to develop an even more enhanced version for Tegra 3, the world’s first quad-core mobile processor.

I guess that means we have to wait until Episode III to play as Knuckles too?

Or maybe just skip that, SEGA, and make Sonic 3 & Knuckles 3D a reality.

Wasn't the point of Sonic 4 supposed to be that Sonic was the only playable character? How many more episodes before Big the Cat?

Yeah...I'm now not happy about this. I bought the game on Wii. So like, if the episodes connect, I have the buy the fucking game on another platform?

I was thinking (though SEGA never hinted this) the ultimate goal was to release a retail Sonic 4 with all the episodes included, but given how long it's taking Episode 2, maybe Wii won't even be around by then. I do think it's weird they're not doing either Wii, 3DS, or Vita.

At this point WiiWare is pretty much dead - it`ll probably see an eShop WiiU release. Though i have to wonder, why the dont release their titles on the 3DS and its eShop.

People don't really object to multiple playable characters, as long as they're not complete diversions (like Big or the werehog) or just plain retarded (any new character post-Sonic Adventure).

No WiiWare release probably has to do with size constraints. Sonic 4 Episode 1 already had to have the music replaced with midis to be able to fit. I can only hope that this means the game will be bigger than Episode 1.

Interestingly, the teaser doesn't mention Wii Ware at all.

It's kind of weird that Sega has stopped putting Sonic games on the Wii despite it being the strongest platform for the series this generation. That said, I'm sure it's different for digital products; selling digital goods has never been the Wii's strong suit. The effort needed to make a Wii version just probably isn't worth whatever sales they would have gotten. That doesn't explain the absence of a Wii version of Generations, but that's neither here nor there.

Rumor has it Colors started out as a Wii version of Generations. So there's that.

I hope this isn't a cynical copy of Mega Drive/Genesis Sonic games on the surface, but without any of the good level design that the older games are known for. I appreciate that they're fixing the physics, but that was only 50% of Sonic 4 Ep 1's problems.

Though if this is Dimps making it, it's going to be bad.

I dunno Blaze was okay.
I mean she was just a reskinned Sonic, but thats why she was okay.

EDIT- Noticed the teaser didnt mention Steam. Was this mentioned in the interview?

Not that I remember, dude was just listing off PSN, XBLA, iOS, WP7, and Android.

Didn't WiiWare take a spectacular faceplant right out of the gate?

Yeah, but if the game both sold better and got a better reception on Wii even in spite of the inferiority of WiiWare it seems risky to just drop it like that. Maybe they'll release it on WiiU at launch, or on the 3DS eShop, or whatever.

That beard... ugh.

They say "new physics", but we'll have to see when we get footage.

That relationship is pretty ironic considering the Colors stage in Generations is one of the worst levels.
It is perhaps the case that when both Colours and Generations were both in development together, the only thing they had to go by for the Generations level were some of the concepts and concept art of the original Colours Planet Wisp. That's why the stages feel so different in terms of wisp/hedgehog balancing and organic/synthetic environment balancing.

Listened to the whole thing, Ken did specifically call out the "jogging up a wall" and "uncurling" issues. So maybe those are fixed.
Maybe.

I mean itd make sense if it was. Small tweaks were made to the physics in Sonic Colors DS compared to Sonic 4 but those were kinda cheap fixes probably added in late. Generations 3DS is pretty damn close. So there is a noticeable upwards trend in the physics.
Hopefully they're reusing their work in Generations 3DS or use the Retro engine.

Sonic 4 looks a lot less cohesive without consistent physics between games. Would sure be nice if they upgraded the first episode to the new games' physics if they really fixed it. Not holding out any hope though.

I'm a bit worried as that could potentially be mechanics they have tweaked and not an all new physics system.

If I let go of the direction and he stops dead in the air, they sure as shit are using the same engine.

Dimps made Generations 3DS, and the classic physics in that game are very good - better than the console version, even.
I know. Actually going from the 3DS version (and Sonic CD for that matter) back to the HD version feels odd given that the spindash is more powerful than normal in the HD version. It makes the game so easy.

However... is Dimps still even working on this?

"The wait is over."

I don't think anyone has been waiting for this, Sega.
Took the words right out of my mouth...

Ah, this is how SEGA gets you to buy a retail release of Sonic 4, muhahah.

That's what I was thinking. The differences in the gameplay because of these changes will make each episode feel disconnected if they don't unify them with the same features.

Classic Sonic in Generations spoiled me. They need to change everything to get me interested. I have super low expectations when it comes to Dimps.

Sonic 4 was horrible...the game felt off, it was genesis levels remade, and the music sucked.

I don't understand a new graphics engine, isn't this suppose to be part of a whole game/"saga"

That's exactly what I was thinking, I could see them eventually packing all the episodes up with fixed physics and a unified artstyle eventually. Or maybe episode 1 will forever be a weird outlier.

I guess visually, it'll look less...bitmappy in it's quality, I guess?

"Can you remind our viewers at home when we'll get our hands on Episode 2."
"In 2012."

I'm curious about how it'll look this time around.

Because man, Episode 1 looked so weird. Like pre-rendered graphics from 1990 done in high res. Like graphic libraries from Klik n' Play.

I need an Iizuka-san interview/Q&A about Sonic 4 now. Only then will I be amused.

Anyway, speaking of the graphics, I hope it looks far superior to Episode 1's look. That look rubbed me the wrong way, and everything looked like perfect shiny plastic. I disliked it a lot. In an ideal world, this would be using the Retro Engine or something like it, with the artstyle and vibrant colours from past Sonic games. We haven't seen anything from Episode 2 yet, though, so I should really reserve judgement about the artstyle and physics.
