Gamer Girls Taking A Stand in thought provoking youtube video

because ive been burned on release days. im not taking chances anymore, so i preorder when i want something.

i dont even mind gamestop. i know the men and women there are doing their jobs, so i go with the motions.

ah okay

People are idiots, people who stereotype, so on and so on. Teenagers are the worst annoying little ones on X-box live or whatever.

but this phony baloney girl gamer bullshit has got to stop, it's people like fucking Olivia Munn and every other damn attention getter out there.

It depends on the game and service. I play Halo on Xbox Live, basically FPSes and fighters are breeding grounds for hearing awful shit.
Okay, so the online gaming is full of people who hide behind their gamertag and are using every chance they get to insult others? I already knew that. Happens to me every single day (everyone has had sex with my mother, everyone was going to find and kill me at some point, lots of people wanted to „snap“ my neck [these funny guys]) Now please tell me why that is worse if you're a female? That's the only part I don't understand. Why do you (or the people in this video) think that it's worse than what guys have to put up with? :)

if you (dierected towards no one in particular) stopped using voice chat because of trash talk, you're doing it wrong.

there are just as many adults and people who arent complete fuckwits on Live as there are morons.

the mute and block comms features on XBL work well and are there for just that reason. it might take bit more effort, but it works well.

Still have to mute someone after the fact. Not worth the effort if I just want to shoot at people without hearing anything.

Because I play with men and guess who gets singled out.

If you don't want to get harassed don't announce the fact that you're a GURL GAMER to everyone

It may be pathetic that it needs to be this way, but they know full well what will happen with the amount of horrible people on the internet

Just don't include anything that gives away that you're a girl in your damn name and avoid talking if you must play games with cesspool communities like COD.

I don't fully quite get why some girls feel the need to display their gender. You arent special, guys don't do it and it has no effect on the game. All it does is add negativity to the whole grrl gamerZ thing

I have a few female friends who speak in games, don't try to draw attention to themselves and don't suffer abuse. I guess it's down to the community

Because they are proud to be females? If you find it annoying ignore them.

My position on this is that this mainly happens simply because it's online. As said from previous posters people act like dicks online but you'll never catch them saying that crap in real life.

I can confidently say that most of my female friends play games. Whenever I go back to Hong Kong, the one thing all of my friends can all agree to doing is go to an arcade. Sure there might be a little discrepancy when we head inside (guys head for Gundam VS while the girls head for music games) but otherwise there is no "OMG A GIRL!" or "GTFO!"

The girls don't get insulted when they completely crush the opposite gender in a game of Reflec Beat
(besides me, I've never lost to them before </stealth brag>)
nor do they gloat in their triumph.

Actually this does remind me of one funny gender story I have. This one girl was playing Maximum Tune 3, she was bloody amazing at it. Kept on winning races against various other amazing (male) players. Sad thing is, she would also yell out sexist insults after each race. I decided to play for the hell of it to get experience. As most of you are reading this, you can probably guess that I somehow lucked out as the winner. With a 0m advantage (you Max Tune players know what I'm talking about). As I just sat there in shock, the girl comes up to me and just starts swearing up a storm. She is going completely nuts. Sexist insults, insults about my family, etc. While I was just sitting there staring at her not even fully paying attention to the situation at hand.

Then suddenly for some unknown reason I blurted out "TESTOSTERONE FOR THE WIN BITCH!" She, not very familiar with the English language just stood there confused. However she got the idea that she was just insulted because behind me were apparently a group of British people laughing their asses off at her. She stormed off and I became friends with the British guys.

i wish arcades were still popular in the west...

On the other hand don't make video's complaining about people who trash talk you about being a girl. Most people do ignore it.

That video is meaningless. In the great scheme of things it has no worth. It will be forgotten in 24 hours.

Because they are proud to be females? If you find it annoying ignore them.

I'm proud to be male, do I show off that fact wherever I play games? no

For the record I have no problem with girls who play games, obviously. What I do have a problem is is the ones that draw this kind of attention to themselves and let's face it they know full well what the reaction is going to be.

I'm sure most female gamers knows how to avoid harassment if they really wanted to. It's just that they shouldn't be harassed because they happened to have girl/gal/etc in their tag or they felt like using the voice chat feature. It sucks to have to "hide" or whatever.

That video is kinda lame though. lol.

I'm watching the video without sound, and even without sound it's extremely annoying. If these women want respect, maybe they'd start by stop making such condescending videos and one that tries so hard to fit in. This is like the videogame version of "don't copy that floppy."

I mean can anything scream wannabe harder than using lingo that nobody even realistically uses? You're here to pwwnn'? Get out of here with that nonsense. If you want to be respected as a gamer who happens to be a woman, then stop emphasizing that you are a woman gamer and just play games.

You know the internet is a shithouse usually so who the hell would put anything they're proud of somewhere thinking that no one could possibly use that information to insult or annoy them? Include manga lover in your gamertag and people will insult you because of that. People will use all information they can get to insult you based on that information. If you don't tell them you're a girl they'll just assume you're a guy and you'll be called a fag or something like that.

It shouldn't be that way, sure. Thought that's a whole different story and I fail to see how all of this only applies to girls. You can see it here on NeoGAF as well. Have a Gears of War avatar and you'll be called out for that whenever there's a comparison between Uncharted and Gears. People use all the information they can gather... it's always been like that. If you're not willing to deal with that you shouldn't use that avatar. If you're not willing to deal with being insulted on Xbox Live you shouldn't use a mic, only play with friends or mute everyone else. Males and females should do that.

Again: It shouldn't be that way, but that's how it is. Same for males and females.

So, don't ask, don't tell? Stay classy online gamers.

lol? Of course people aren't classy online. You want to be avoid being called a faggot or whatever online, don't talk to people online because they WILL call you that.

I can't even imagine why you'd bring out that old stay classy chestnut. Did you have any reason to expect them to be classy? Just so you know? People online? Not classy. I'm talking about people as a group not individuals of course. I'm classy as shit and have the ascot to prove it.

If you don't want to get harassed don't announce the fact that you're a GURL GAMER to everyone

Except people will pull up your profile or just harass women I play with on their voice alone. Are women just supposed to mute themselves online?

Seriously, I can talk just fine (mostly) online without someone going HA HA YOU HAVE A DICK GO SIGN UP FOR THE MILITARY YOU PUSSY. I play with the female members of the forums or clans that I'm in and it's almost nonstop HA HA GET IN THE KITCHEN BOOBS

I expected one of them to blurt out, "I am a paid actor."

There was some pretty obvious line reading with two of them. Good message, though not the best execution.

You disclose it every time you talk through a mic.

Not the same thing as calling yourself 'SexyNerdGuy'.

I find it strange how these girls claim to want equal treatment in online games, but at the same time put the fact that they're a girl in flashing neon lights. They know what the online environment's like, and they know that they're going to get treated differently for having a name like that, yet they do it anyway. This all suggests that they are looking for special attention for being a girl but they don't like the negative attention which comes with it.

You can't have your cake and eat it too, ladies.

Edit: Don't get me wrong, I know that women get harassed just for having a female voice in some places. I don't question that. I just question the motives of girls who actively call themselves things like 'SexyNerdGirl'.

People call males fag constantly simply because they assume you're male (if you're not talking) or because they know you're male because you're talking. Where's the difference?

I get that shit and I don't put my fucking gender up in flashing lights. The fucking apologist horseshit in this thread, ugh. Saw before your edit =/.

Some of the worst harassment I'd get would be post game lobby because I'm pretty good at Halo and "omg a girl beat me at the vidya" bullshit was inevitable. The worst thing I ever got was a message on xbox live telling me to go get raped. Ruined my evening.

No offense, but get some thicker skin. I have been told I would be beaten to death over the head with a severed horse cock, been cussed out in nearly every language known to man, been called every nasty thing you could say to a Mexican, have had leagues of people changing their username to insult mine, been told to fly to Texas all fees paid to have my neck stomped under a steel boot, called a son of a whore, called a hacker/aimbot/waller daily as much as I brush my teeth, my sexual preference has been brought into question more times than the number of days in a year, been told "suck my clit" from salty girl gamers, and that's just from some of the things I was able to translate or were said in plain ol' english. And that's just the Call of Duty crowd. I wouldn't dare let such sludge players ruin my night. I'll make them rage quit and eat their words.

My condolences for the shit you get, but if you are good at a game, be prepared for a daily dose of premium poo flying your way all the time from the thumbless mitts of the players you defeated.

Wow. Since when did "GURL Gamer" become the new "Welfare Queen?" What a remarkably moronic way to paint an entire community with the same shitty anecdotal brush.

Yep, if you sound black or foreign, just try and sound white. It sucks that it has to be this way, but it's your fault for advertising your natural speaking voice. You know what? Just don't speak. Oh, and it's ok for dudes to have gamertags like "Sunbro", "Wowdude" , "Sniperman", but god damn you if you're a girl and you name yourself "twilightchick." You're asking to be insulted. It's your fault. This is the way it is online. If you don't like it, leave. There isn't a systemic, entrenched culture of of behavior here that should be addressed and confronted, it's just how online play is and always will be. You deserve to be shunned and ridiculed for even attempting to draw attention to an issue that profoundly affects your ability to enjoy something you care deeply about, something you should be allowed to enjoy freely. Keep that desire to yourself, and experience your games the way WE feel you should be able to, not the way you have every right to be able to. Maintain the status quo.

Seriously, this thread has gone beyond pathetic. If anyone needed to be reminded of the misogyny ingrained in the gaming community, look no further. It's beautifully unaware of how far it's gone up its own asshole.

If you talk through a mic in a random online game you're probably going to get abused regardless of gender.

I got insulted quite a bit a few years back when I still used a mic when playing with random people because of my accent in games, maybe I should make a video about it

I get that shit and I don't put my fucking gender up in flashing lights. The fucking apologist horseshit in this thread, ugh.
Like I've said; I get called a fag all the time. People tell me how they've had sex with my mum and I didn't do anything either. I did nothing to provoke these actions just like you do not provoke them either. How are unprovoked insults any different just because the person who gets insulted is female?

You'd have a point if males didn't have to deal with any of that crap. Though that's not what the reality looks like.

Yeah don't get me wrong, I sympathise with girls who get shit just for talking online. I know a few who don't use a microphone anymore since they can't be bothered with the stuff that comes with it.

Frequency.

Incredibly cringe inducing - reading lines and trying to inject a bit of faux sass in to it.

Your age, gender, sexuality, class or religion don't matter, if there's open chat then you're going to get abused, whether you take that personally or not is entirely up to you. It'd be great if that WASN'T the case, but:

Me acknowledging the internet community for the way it is doesn't mean I support it. However, some people are always going to be assholes when they are protected by anonymity. Anything that they can latch onto they'll attack, the easier the better. Sadly being a girl is one of the easiest things to identify, and one of the easiest to attack.

Are you calling me a misogynist because of what I posted? I find that rather unfair.

I don't know man... I want to believe in a better world, but any videogame dedicated MP channel, forum (not GAF!) or group chat is a cesspool of human waste if you judge it by the general commentary that is going on.

A few hours ago I played DoWII Retribution and the first comment on the general chat was "if yoy play SCII you are a faggot".

I then proceeded to close the chat.

The simple fact is that a lot of online players are ill behaved, snotnosed assholes.
The dumb kids who call girls stupid shit will hardly refrain from calling guys faggots/ racial slurs / whatever

And of course this embarassing gurl gamer amateur video will do absolutely nothing to change that.

I haven't read all of it but it seems to me like the problem is exactly what I said it is. More information about you makes it easier to insult you. The text even states that males who sound like black guys get insulted based on that information.

You've probably read it and know where I can find the part where it says that the insults are more intense for females than they are for males? At work currently so I won't have time to read all of it now (will later, though... sounds interesting). I also find it hard to accept comparisons that use personal experience as sources... Should have asked me!

Are you calling me a misogynist because of what I posted? I find that rather unfair.
It would be unfair, but you're presenting a damn compelling argument that it is the case due to how oblivious you seem to be of the problem of systemic persecution of women online.

Men aren't tasked with broadcasting their gender online because their presence is so universal that the average player is presumed to be male until proven otherwise. Your "don't ask, don't tell" policy reinforces this notion by blatantly encouraging women on the internet to allow their contemporaries to assume that they're male. How is that at all conducive to progress? And if you don't acknowledge that progress needs to be made, then congratulations, you're a misogynist. The prevalence of videos like these in comparison to the prevalence (or lack thereof, as the case may be) of "I'm a male gamer" videos should make that pretty clear to you.

There is a thick and distinct line between the sort of random abuse incurred by all players online -- including behaviorally-oriented abuse that may or may not be connected to actual gameplay -- and the non-random, directed abuse that is rooted in racism and sexism. Racism is prevalent online but it's an entirely different beast due to the fact that the proportional representation of racial minorities online is not all that different from what it is offline, whereas the number of females playing, say, online shooters, is quite visibly smaller than the amount of males despite the fact that both make up around half of the earth's population. And you know what, if I'm wrong and the difference isn't that large, it is due to people like you -- people encouraging women to conceal their gender, either implicitly through a constructed and ultimately near-endless barrage of gender-construed abuse, or explicitly by actually telling them to conceal their gender online -- that such an inability to identify these females remains to even such a thoroughly seasoned online player such as myself.

This directed and non-random abuse is preventable. It is this form of abuse that these videos are focused on, because this form of abuse specifically affects them and it absolutely doesn't need to happen. Very rarely is a man on the internet attacked because he is a man. If that happens, us men will be able to stand up and acknowledge how ridiculous that is. Right now, it's the women doing that, and it's so insanely ingrained that even the people who aren't perpetuating this kind of behavior are often too blind to see it that way.

By the way, the comics oriented towards the "THAT'S RIGHT, I'M A GIRL GAMER" character are about just that: A character. That character exists to justify harassment of attention whores, not women. Don't get the message confused.
