To be fair to Orton his time as champion completely revolved around his feud with Christian which was incredibly terrible outside of their great matches.
Terrible writing and booking all together.

Orton gets a title shot because Teddy Long grants a popularity contest from the audience.

Christian does the same thing Orton does and asks Teddy, but Teddy makes him earn a shot by winning a match. Just dumb all around, and so was the feud. Helped nobody and made Christian look like a chump.

Both shows really have either much unused talent or just book them mindlessly.

I don't know, of the non-Attitude Era people he's the most consistently over. Cena is always split to a minimum degree, and while Punk and Ryder are both very over, they're over in certain parts much more than they are in others. Orton gets a huge pop pretty much everywhere they've been all year.

So the biggest Punk/Ryder pops are bigger than Orton's, certainly, but they aren't over as evenly as he is. There's been shows where the crowd weren't that interested in Ryder, for instance, next to others like MSG that were wild for him.

They're the three I'd put at the top (and that's over Triple H, despite his best efforts for the last six months)

There are shows that haven't been less interested in Orton as well, but I'll grant you he has a more stable reaction than some of the other top faces. I personally don't believe he's a draw in certain markets even if they give him a decent pop.

It's really a shame that the WWE doesn't use this to better effect. Certain things they try like the Piper/Cena promo would have done perfect with the right audience, but wherever that crowd was from just didn't have the same venom for Cena as say, a NY or Canadian crowd would.
It's nice that Punk gets to sort of be Chicago's guy, but they really need to temper the shows more around different crowds as different stars are bigger in certain markets.

I always knew about the screwjob but never in depth like this Bret vs Shawn blu-ray is showing me, I had no idea HHH was where the idea started from. It also made me a fan of Bret, a person who's matches I never got to see. This is such a great tape, hours of old matches for me to enjoy.

Also I really think Earl Hebner was actually born as a referee, damn he has been doing this for a long time.

Okay, so WWE NXT is once again on in the background and Justin Gabriel has some incredibly small trunks all of a sudden, alternative lifestyle!/Cena
And when did Heath Slater get this cheesy one man band theme?

Also, go watch the 1998 documentary "Hitman Hart: Wrestling With Shadows" (it's on Netflix streaming if you have it) and read Dave Meltzer's recap of the whole thing to get even more education on what happened.

The amount of incredible backstage footage they got after Survivor Series '97 for the documentary seriously made me believe the whole thing was a work. Also, Meltzer was in constant communication with Bret during the week before Survivor Series, so he knows the scoop as well.

Seriously the most controversial thing that has happened and will ever happen in wrestling. HBK didn't admit until 5 years later that he was even in on it.

Thanks for the suggestion, I do want to know even more about it. I really felt for Bret during his recap of the whole thing, being paranoid but then talking the Earl thinking he was covered, but getting "screwed" anyway.

I ordered the blu ray the other day, looking forward to watching it. Haven't seen nearly enough Bret stuff as I should have really.

The documentary has footage of Bret talking to Earl before the match. Earl tells Bret that he swears on the lives of his two children, he won't do anything to screw him over. It's incredible to watch Hebner totally lie his ass off right to Bret's face.

Am I crazy or is this Overeem guy just gonna destroy Brock? Feels that way and I know nothing about MMA

I'm picking Brock to win personally but Overeem seems to be the favourite. If Overeem can keep it standing (big if) he will knock Lesnar out. Also Lesnar coming back after such a long lay off from illness could be a factor. But I think Lesnar's wrestling wins it for him.

lol @ people blaming hhh for shawn michael's behavior. the guy's been a jackass his entire life

True, but recently re-reading Jericho's book, really made me realize HHH was (is?) a grade A piece of shit. Just a self absorbed back stabbing bully. It wouldn't surprise me if he somehow had a big hand in the entire thing

I have around 4000+ Microsoft points that I've been sitting on for ages. I think I'll spend some of it by renting the Bret vs. HBK documentary since everyone's said nothing but good things about it.

I can't stand him. You don't even need to know inside info like Jericho's to realize how much of a self-absorbed scumbag this guy is. It boggles my mind the pops he gets from the crowd. It's like they're paying them to cheer, it doesn't make sense. Fuckin' marks™.

All you have to do is look at Chyna now to see what a shithead HHH is. He totally ruined her life for the chance to bang his way into the McMahon empire. You never heard any stories of Chyna doing anything crazy or stupid until HHH dumped her for Steph and she got forced out of the company.

That's more scummy than anything he did to other wrestlers.

Especially since I remember a few years back when he was at Cena levels of hate with people screaming about how he buries talent, puts on generic boring matches, and takes up too much time on the show.

To be fair Chyna is not much of a person either

Um, but the screwjob DID originate with HHH. He convinced Vince, and they both convinced Shawn to go through with it. And Vince told Hebner about it basically in the gorilla position before the match and threatened him with his job.

In fact, even if shawn didn't put bret in the sharpshooter, the screwjob would have happened some other way, either with a fast count or hebner counting 3 when bret kicks out at 2.5 on a near-fall spot.

Shawn may have been in on it but really Vince and hebner were the one essential to pulling it off, and HHH was the mastermind behind the whole damn thing.

HHH and Vince >>>>>>>>>> Shawn and Hebner in terms of blame, and even Bret acted less than professionally by refusing to job (understandable considering the circumstances and tensions, but still atypical of Bret. If it wasn't both against Shawn Michaels and in Canada and with all that had happened over the previous year or two between them, Bret would have been a company guy and done the job as he went out.)

Every one of the 5 people involved had a good reason for acting the way they did though (I'm not saying I agreed with it, just that they had motivations that could be understood from each person's perspective).... except for HHH. Which is why I put the screwjob more on him since he orchestrated the damn thing but had nothing to gain

Such a messed up situation...

If you truly believe HHH in 1997 was in the position to be a "mastermind" of anything, you don't really know what you're talking about. At most, HHH probably just threw out an idea and they went with a version of his idea.

Shawn Michaels said in his book that Hebner knew about it all day and that his claims of only being told 10 minutes before the match were full of shit.

He broke up with her. That's not scummy at all. The only people who have their lives ruined over a breakup are Russian contract wives, fraudulent millionaire's staving off debt, and Adele-level stalkers. She had her own issues.

Watch the old matches on the DVD/Blu ray they are a treat, a d will give you an idea of why he was so highly regarded in the ring. Brett was a wrestling machine.
