UC women generally strike me as the lady of the house with naginata in hand; strong, but not necessarily independent, certainly not progressive, and female primarily to tug extra-hard at the heartsrings when they inevitably die.
Then again you get the ones that are crazy. Because you know, there's this guy they like and it makes them do things.

This is what makes those rare characters like Kihel Heim more noteworthy, I suppose, because they have an ambition that comes from within, they aren't simply trying to create or protect their families.

Taking off her clothes 5 seconds in.
Running around in a swimsuit.
Other girl taking off Madoka's clothes
Shower scene

Did you even watch it? lulz.

Jeez, cut me some slack here. I didn't say there wasn't any fanservice at all.

or maybe you're too used to fanservice it doesn't register in the mind anymore.

This may be a possibility. I still don't think there was that much fanservice compared to some other things I've seen recently. I only watched Infinite Stratos a few weeks ago and it seemed like it had way more fanservice than RnL did, for instance.

There was less fanservice in the 1st episode of IS than Rinne no Lagrange.

You might as well make it comprehensive:

- Opening shot is on Madoka’s ass.
- Madoka strips down to swimsuit for more fanservice.
- Madoka still in swimsuit at school even though she could have changed.
- Sexual abuse sensei.
- Ass shot in classroom scene.
- Tennis fanservice .
- Skirt drop/clothes removal coupled with camera panning over body slowly.
- ‘Panties off’ and 'inspection'.
- Shower scene with shots on breasts and ass.
- Rei’s uniform every time its on screen.
- Special ass shot of Rei’s uniform.

I need that Homer backing away into the bush GIF and I need it now.

I guess I just don't really see fanservice anymore. This is a serious problem. I should go and marathon multiple seasons of Ikkitousen until I can see it again.

Well I didn't want to go overboard with the point that the episode was rife with fanservice.

I need that Homer backing away into the bush GIF and I need it now.

Even Sankarea's manga fell off its legs, I really don't give two shits who animates it now.

On the other hand, Tasogare Otome is getting an anime next spring.. Now that better get a deserving studio.

Rewatching Oreimo as I have nothing better to do at the moment and Kyousuke's seiyuu is just fucking awesome. I'm not really into the whole Seiyuu thing and don't know any names other than Fukuyuma but sometimes seiyuu's just make animes.

The mecha genre used to have primarily a male fanbase, during the glory days of Gundam and it's ilk. Over the years, the fanbase has shifted to being primarily female, which is one reason Code Geass was so fabulous. Actually, it was probably the primary reason.

Source on this? Anecdotally, even? I find it highly unlikely.

Name a shoujo manga other than Rayearth from the 90s and the Geass spinoff that is mecha-based. And both of the above have the same link - CLAMP.

If you mean "fabulous" in that it was filled with bishounen and brolust undertones, then that's just savvy marketing.

I would imagine the studios would like to appeal more to males, but it's pretty obvious that today's male anime fans aren't interested in the stuff they used to be. My comment that combining moe and mecha hasn't been done all that much outside of Xenoglossia was sort of referring to this.

If Nadesico and Evangelion had been made today, do you think modern anime fans would consider them to have a combination of moe and mecha? What about Gunbuster? There's no denying Diebuster's a moe/mecha combination.

Kallen was there for the male watchers of Code Geass. I always found it hilarious that everybody in that show piloted their mechas sitting in a normal chair, except Kallen, who mounted and straddled her controls in the most blatantly fanservicey way possible. Hilarious and awesome.

I would unfortunately say that EVERY female character in Code Geass was there for the male watchers of Code Geass.

Don't feel bad, Jexhius apparantly can't see any fanservice with Kanbaru in Bakemonogatari, I guess if you like something it doesn't seem out of context or fanservicey. I welcome Jexhius as a fellow tomboy afficiendo and eagerly await the day he recognizes it consciously so we can gush over our favorites over tea and schones.

Did a New Years Detective Conan movie marathon to catch me up to where I am in the TV series. Impressions abound.

The Private Eyes Requiem
Quickly paced, not diluted by some overbearing underwhelming mystery with a lot of surprises. While it did feel a bit like a long TV Original in terms of story, the animation and various details made it worthwhile. Kid's appearance was a bit... fanservicey? I didn't mind it, but in retrospect it didn't make all that much sense. Not much else to say other than it was a fun movie.

Yeah I agree. Was decent, but not great, but still tons of fun to watch. ^_^

Jolly Roger in the Deep Azure
Oh boy, what to say... Other than being Detective Conan, this movie offered me nothing. This really DID feel like a TV original episode made available as a theatrical release. There was no real mystery to speak of and what was a mystery was entirely too thinly veiled. The animation was barely up to what one would expect from a movie's budget and the sequences that were supposed to be action packed and thrilling were laughable because of how absurd or unnecessary they were. Maybe I was just let down by the lack of pirate costumes that the marketing material seemed to imply.

Yeah, this was one of the weakest Conan movies in every respect. >_<

Full Score of Fear
Not the most memorable or action packed of the bunch, but still managed to be quite enjoyable. The classical pieces played throughout (that the plot revolved around) and the above average screenplay made it enjoyable to watch. Felt much more "movie-like" than the previous flick. There were a few niggling problems though, for instance, it is discovered that Conan apparently has "perfect pitch". The problem with that is, throughout the show, anything music-related is Conan's one Achilles heel. So much so, that he has to consult someone with perfect pitch as a vital part of an arc. Well, if he has perfect pitch, then you're telling me that during an entire arc he sought out someone for nothing? Very odd. My hopes for this film were to see him toil through one thing that he doesn't have a mastery understanding of, but it turns out he does. So. Yeah.

Yeah, the whole Conan having perfect pitch bothered me too. He's always been tone-deaf, which was played up to great effect in a WAY earlier set of episodes when his seiyuu guest-starred as herself and sang with him. XD

The Raven Chaser
I'd always seen a lot of promotional things for this movie, so I anticipated that it was probably a big deal. And It is. This is the second movie (but the first proper, if you ask me) that revolves entirely on The Black Organization. There's a lot of set-up and a lot of pay off. Probably the best movie to date and subject to a lot of fist pumping and edge sitting. It probably has the darkest tone of any of the movies too, but manages to not feel down right macabre. Lovely. Great movie to end my marathon on.

Yes, this movie was much more fun to watch and very impressive throughout.

I don't know, if it's a good restoration job it might well look better. For example, what I've seen of the Highschool of the Dead BD's they look worse than the Patlabor BD's, and that show was made 'in HD'.

I guess I haven't seen the good restorations yet then (I've not seen Patlabor in HD yet), 'cause most of the others look very impressive, but still rough around the edges.

Rewatching Oreimo as I have nothing better to do at the moment and Kyousuke's seiyuu is just fucking awesome. I'm not really into the whole Seiyuu thing and don't know any names other than Fukuyuma but sometimes seiyuu's just make animes.

Yep, OreImo's top notch seiyuu do carry the show a great distance, and the lovely artwork and animation carry it the rest of the way for me. And you're right about seiyuu performance making the difference in some shows. Hell it's the only thing that really got me through Mayo Chiki at times as Eri Kitamura just fucking nailed her role in that, which kept me coming back.

I hope you don't think this is a bad thing.

Watch Agent Aika instead!

a fantastic idea

Okay, I just watched it on Wikipedia. It is relevant to my interests. I'll have to look into it.

edit: Hmm, so the original series is 7 OVAs, released in 1997. It was followed by a prequel OVA, and then a middle 3-OVA series. Going by the series chronology, I would have to watch the first prequel OVA (Aika R-16 Virgin Mission), then the 3-OVA series (Aika Zero), and then the 7-OVA original series itself. Is this the right way to do it, or should I watch the original series first?

Eri Kitamura is delicious in about any role. She is talented.

Name a shoujo manga other than Rayearth from the 90s and the Geass spinoff that is mecha-based. And both of the above have the same link - CLAMP.

(Anecdotal) Mecha anime titles whose cast were created with an eye, sometimes a large eye, towards the female audience: Gundam Wing, Gundam Seed, Code Geass, Gundam 00 (whose characters were actually designed by a BL artists, if I remember correctly).

(Factual): Not really a scientific survey, but these results speak for themselves:

Compiled by the otaku matchmaking service (!) Otakuma from a poll conducted between April and August of this year, here are the top anime series ranked by popularity by gender.

Males
1) K-On!
2) The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi
3) Lucky Star
4) Gundam (all series)
5) Saki

Females
1) Gundam (all series)
2) K-On!
3) Code Geass
4) Macross Frontier
5) Evangelion / Toradora! (tie)

No one gets a sequel until we get a 3rd season of Spice and Wolf.

I'll add a new season of Full Metal Panic! to the list.

I've actually owned the Broken Saints DVD for some time and they do an impressive job constructing atmosphere, considering the limitations of the medium they chose to work in. Definitely worth a watch, or at least I thought so several years ago.

Yeah, I hope it still stands up. I did check out the first chapter last night and enjoyed it. One thing I took note was the voice acting. After hearing some bad voice work in season 1 of Gundam 00 I can notice how the actors actually put effort in to their work on Broken Saints.

I agree, but I was thinking more about audience response. In general, after a couple of episodes of Blood C lots of people got tired of the show 'doggedly sticking to a dull formula' and so they stopped watching, assuming the show would carry on repeating that formula and never changing.

I don't know, if it's a good restoration job it might well look better. For example, what I've seen of the Highschool of the Dead BD's they look worse than the Patlabor BD's, and that show was made 'in HD'.

I'm reminded of Babylon 5, a show originally filmed in 16:9 in anticipation of the future HD format. Unfortunately all the CG work was low-resolution so it looks quite crappy on TV's today. I believe the original, high-res, computer models were somehow lost after the series ended its run. Nobody thought to save them, oops.

Gintama 89

what the fuck was that

Sorachi's twisted Bleach parody. (And Sunrise brilliantly showing off how to save in production costs.)

only the first OVA (1997) is a true masterpiece.

Three Gundams and a CLAMP show do not the entire mecha genre make - all animated by Sunrise, incidentally.

(Factual): Not really a scientific survey, but these results speak for themselves:

Interesting list, thanks - although I'm amazed that Hetalia is ranked for men and not for women. I wonder what this would like like at present? I'd have thought that Saki and Macross F would be long out of those rankings, for instance.

I don't disagree that Gundam, Geass and Macross have a lot of cross-gender appeal. But they are still the exception rather than the rule.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

Geez at this rate I may actually watch the last two episodes of Stellvia and the last episode of Haruhi S2.

Dealing with time travel is always a slippery slope when the rules are laid out, fortunately this movie didn't really leave me with many questions at the end.
Well I did say "many", 3 things struck me, 1) Makoto's time leap when she was first aware of it, she leaped back, and then proceeded to rebound back forward to the present against her will, maybe this was to explain that Chiaki can go back to his present time which would have indicated going back into the past was temporary, but it was only ever displayed once. 2) At the start I had the impression of the classic past meets future selves, which wasn't the case, they went with leaping back into my past body route or at least I think they did, which brings the obvious question where is the momentum coming from that she's rolling after a time leap if she's leaping back into her own body. 3) That ending part with Chiaki and Makoto was one hell of a weird scene, he does know she'll be at grandma age while he's still a teen right? RIGHT!?

Where's the fun in restraint?

It feels like being a meanie.

I don't disagree that Gundam, Geass and Macross have a lot of cross-gender appeal. But they are still the exception rather than the rule.

Well not only is the appeal cross-gender, but it seems to scoring more successfully with females than males, although I'd like to see more data on the subject, especially if it was collected properly.

Moreover "it's only Gundam, Geass and Macross, not the whole genre" is a bit like saying "it's only the largest, most successful and well known mecha franchises of the current age". Every other mecha titles is on the periphery of them so the trends they follow is the mainstream.

I suppose that, like the big mainstream shounen adventure/action titles, the largest mecha franchises have learnt how to successfully cater to every single demographic, therefore increasing the reach of their shows.

Hey guys, I need some recommendations.
I'm looking for something within last 5 years or so that is slow, and adventurous.
Fighting shouldn't be the focus (as in full episodes just focusing on a fight).
Maybe something like a group of people going around the world and meeting interesting people, or maybe a treasure hunter. I'm not really sure how to describe what I'm looking for but anything ideas are welcomed. I'm not looking for comedy though.

Secondly, looking for anime based on cooking. This one I'm more flexible with in terms of release date.

Thank you so much.

Watch Twelve Kingdoms.
Rinne no Lagrange - 1

Perfect!

This was pretty enjoyable. I will watch it!

Definitely will watch this.
Which anime should I finish first? Mushishi, Samurai Champloo, or Welcome to the NHK?

Mushi shi
Thanks for the recommendations guys.
Seirei no Moribito is pretty much what I'm looking for I think.
I remember watching the first episode when it was first released, and thought this is so slow!

So this is what I have from your recommendations:

Seirei no Moribito
Spice And Wolf
Allison and Lillia (Maybe, because it falls apart in the second half)

Yakitate Japan
Toriko

Thanks!

Allison and lillia is a lot of fun. Also hnnngh.
Mayo Chiki! 1 & 2

I'm impressed, decent premise and a likable main character. Wasn't expecting much so i'm happy.

hhhnnnggg

Hnnngh is right. That was dangerously cute.
I want an Oreimo second season, first season was too damn good.
Would watch
No one gets a sequel until we get a 3rd season of Spice and Wolf.
Would watch twice
My dear zombiemoebros:

Sankarea is Studio DEEN.

Lol. ;_;

I like studio deen.
I think what you're supposed to say is "Oh god, their hair is so shiny, what is this crap? Also, what the hell is going on? I don't even know anyone's names?!"

It looks like we're only going to carry on getting female mecha pilots if they can deliver as much fanservice as humanly possible. See: Kallen.

Kallen <3
Well, Rideback was aired back in '09 and was fairly progressive. Then again, that wasn't a traditional mecha show. Speaking of which, I want more Rideback. :(

Rideback is bizarre but good.
You might as well make it comprehensive:

- ‘Panties off’ and 'inspection'.
- Shower scene with shots on breasts and ass.
- Rei’s uniform every time its on screen.
- Special ass shot of Rei’s uniform.

I dont see a problem here.
Watch Agent Aika instead!

Watch this show. It will improve your life.

Watch Twelve Kingdoms.

That's certainly the answer if you're looking for a slow show with a heavy emphasis on building up a huge world. Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit would be another fine choice, even though it's less of a 'exploring a large world' show.

If Nadesico and Evangelion had been made today, do you think modern anime fans would consider them to have a combination of moe and mecha? What about Gunbuster? There's no denying Diebuster's a moe/mecha combination.

Moe isn't really a genre, so I don't think you can simply 'combine it' with a genre or style. You can take an emphasis on certain character types and designs and then meld that with a genre, which is an approach that a variety of shows have certainly taken.

I guess I just don't really see fanservice anymore. This is a serious problem. I should go and marathon multiple seasons of Ikkitousen until I can see it again.

It might just be a result of the kind of shows that you are currently watching. In some titles, fanservice is so common that you might find it in every single episode, perhaps multiple times. Eventually, after repeated exposure, you may no longer notice it because it is an ever present part of the show. In other works, such as Infinite Ryvius there is zero fanservice, so when it manifested quite overtly in one scene I remembered it, because it was so incongruous to the tone of the show.

Steins;Gate 12

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

So good it renders intelligent response impossible. Just like Garzey's Wing.

Dropped. Totally fucking dropped.

It's like no one has any faith in Studio DEEN any more. It's gotta be tough working there. At least SHAFT shows find success within the otaku marketplace so they'll keep getting their ramen sent in to the studio.

Having now finishes S;G, I shall lol with you. S;G was far more enjoyable for me than MPD was.

On a scale of Utter Disgust to Lifestyle, I'm currently at "Fills up my free time, but could do w/o loli panty/crotch shots," on the moé scale.

yeah the whole loli fanservice thing is where I draw the line. Loli moe good. Loli fanservice bad.
It's like no one has any faith in Studio DEEN any more. It's gotta be tough working there. At least SHAFT shows find success within the otaku marketplace so they'll keep getting their ramen sent in to the studio.

I have complete faith in deen to deliver a good show by my standards. I even own several.

Sailor Moon 13

Just a heads up for anybody interested in watching this show some day: skip the previews after the episode, before an episode and most importantly the episode title scenes themselves.

Fg2o4.jpg

Come on now girl. You’re only 14. I worry for her down the road. Motoko onii-san won’t like that you’re trying to cheat on him with a weirdo who wears a mask.

Damn Umino got told. That’s what gets for liking third-rate scifi manga, must have been Parasyte. This episode started off awesome, in true Jadeite fashion.
Literally projects his gigantic handsome face into the sky and publicly challenges the girls to a fight with all of Tokyo knowing the who, when and where.
I love the hokey humor in this show, where everybody thinks poor Usagi has lost her mind when she tries to be serious for once.

mKUIl.jpg

Worlds biggest jerk or worlds biggest jerk?

On the flip side is Jadeite who is awesome.
Evidently the zombie clay police force doesn’t carry any guns as its just an attempted baton beatdown on the girls.
So the girls decide to transform
right in front of the enemy and then are stunned he’s figured out who they are?
Hilarious. Even more hilarious the girls
CAN RUN FASTER THAN A PLANE. WTF LOL.

weKtZ.jpg

I get the feeling Jadeite might be a sexist. It’s just a hunch. You tell him Usagi! A true firehawk12 episode, the story of 3 young women united working together to overcome the odds placed against them by a man trying to hold him down.
Jadeite went out like a total wuss. He and his fabulous theme song shall be missed ;_;

Overall a great episode even though the battle scene was kind of underwhelming.

Sailor Moon 13

Just a heads up for anybody interested in watching this show some day: skip the previews after the episode, before an episode and most importantly the episode title scenes themselves.

Well, that's true for other shows besides Sailor Moon. Mazinkaiser has an episode titled 'Kouji Kabuto Dies in Magma!'. Yeah.

Still, nothing will ever top Dirty Pair episode titles. Here's a small selection:

"Do Lovely Angels Like Chest Hair?"
"Pursuit Has The Smell Of Cheesecake And Death"
"Hire Us! Better To Get Good-Looking Bodyguards"
"Gotta Do It! Love Is A Woman's Detonator"
