Completely unrelated to anything going on here: Is there a way to skip cut-scenes in MOrtal Kombat's Story mode? I'm continuing and I've got to sit through this long ass cut-scene I've seen before. I've tried everything and it's not skipping :(

Cheese more, stop dying.

my wife will be with me!

in the plane's overhead compartment and resting at the hotel

Family evo trip, awesome. Get some stream time since I'll be stream monstering that entire thing.

I feel it's also an interest demographic problem, as much as I love video games, the stuff the industry tends to shill us doesn't help garner respect for my gender.
To add, it certainly doesn't help that gamers feel the need to subcategorize themselves (girl gamers, gaymers, etc) as a protest against the way the industry is. It's incredibly counterproductive.

wedding rings?
There are a few members here who are married, so yes!
I just want to say that professor beef and I need waifus for our no-PM leper island.

also beef you need to be at Evo next so we can IRL creep lol.
I will try my hardest to make it to EVO this year.

Waifu-less, however.

Nope, sorry. :(

When I say continuing I mean picking up from where I was when I last played before the new year. I'm bad at the game but not horrible :p

I wonder if catcalling has ever worked in the history of mankind.

Son: "Mommy, how did you and Daddy meet?"
Mommy: "Well, son, I was just walking down the street when you're Dad saw me and yelled the most disgusting things at me..."

Have you heard 'Ampersand' by Amanda Palmer? There is a line in the song very similar to this.

I think the most awkward thing I've said to someone of the opposite gender was, when they came down in an evening gown, I whistled and said "Damn, you could make a good dog go off his leash."

Except I flubbed the whistle so it sounded like I went "Pfft, you could make a good dog go off his---shit!"

The "shit" was when I realized I messed it up from the getgo.

oooh that is awkward.

once i invited a guy to come over and hang out after school to check out my dreamcast and play some PSO. i was crushing on him pretty hard, and he made me super nervous. he asked where the controller was and i told him to go ahead and reach for it, i keep it in my behind. it took me hours to realize why he had been laughing; my esl failed me, i was trying to tell him the controller was behind me.

Fresh idea. Some kind soul mind avatarizing this for me? feel free to edit and whatnot.

I wish but no, there is a lot of misconceptions, assumptions and general dumbfuckery I have to plow through when it comes to talking about my gender's issues. It doesn't help that there is a lot of patronizing, willfully ignorant, refusal to look at shit from our perspective nonsense that goes on. It's been getting better I'll admit but that rape thread just brought up a lot of ugliness, and getting cross harassed in TC was no fun either. I've gotten threats in TC (months back) and on the non-gaf forums that follow GAF I've seen unflattering mocking cartoons and other various demeaning bullshit towards me. If I was smarter or meek I would have stopped posting a long time ago but then those fucks would win in silencing yet another vocal female. So fuck that.

Sorry to go off-topic, but I always been a fan of the way you write. It has a great flow of word usage and emotion. Very powerful I say. The way you write, when it comes to expressing your thoughts, is very similar to Angela davis. She's an amazing speaker and writer.

Those fuckwads are at it again? :\ It's bad enough they attacked Trans-GAF a while back, well it was more like almost two years ago. I haven't stepped in the rape thread yet.
Wait, what? Other forums actually follow GAF? At the risk at sounding callous (you are all - okay most of you - really awesome) why? And that really blows that they've done that. What the hell.

Yeah, at least with GAF there are things can't get too out of control, but when you dealing with ex or non gaf shit gets pretty disgusting. Didn't you have the room password protected? I thought it was last time I was in there...which was during the summer.

You should come too so our pillow waifus can meet.

I wish, maybe one year...maybe one year. Classes + not wanting to pay for a plane ticket + the fact that I haven't played UMVC3 or SF4:AE at all means me watching at home :(

What kind of fucked up dream scenario is this? Knowing that an attractive woman will never pull this on me saddens me greatly.

Isn't PAX the same deal, though? Ridiculously packed, I mean. I don't think I can retain my sanity being in a crowd of Bostonians for that long.

NYCC doesn't sound too bad, though. The main complaints I heard from friends were that it was very crowded and that it stunk in there. lol

I'm sure there will be a group, if there isn't one already. These kinds of events are pretty much the only thing NYC GAF meets up for anyways.

I guess it is based on what I heard/read from game-journo websites such as Destructoid and the like; I've never been to PAX so I can't say. Several people that I volunteered with at NYCC, are planning on volunteering at PAX. I plan on reapplying again once Reedpop (the company in charge of organizing every event from PAX to San Diego Comic Con) starts taking applications again some time in June.

When I was working there, I didn't notice the smell honestly for the most part. Probably because there was a strong smell of popcorn that was wafting through the air the entire time. Well save for when I had to do line management for the previously mentioned Capcom booth. It smelled funky and from time to time, it would smell like fart; I would dead ass cover my nose unabashedly when it stank. Your friends are right, but don't let that detract you from going. If anything, go for the photo opportunities with cosplayers and the swag.

Here's a quick anecdote. So the first day of my shift/NYCC for the public, before the floor opened, we had to distribute swag bags. Imagine the horror as dozens upon dozens of hands swarmed around the bin as we distributed the swag bags. People grabbed anything that was free; the gum, the bag. It was like the zombie apolocalypse. We wound up in the bin surrounded by people. It was insane.

One of the best things about Comic Con is that you never know who you're gonna bump into. I ended up spotting and meeting Junot Díaz, the guy who wrote The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao and got my copy autographed while I was managing the line at the Capcom booth.

NYC GAF doesn't just meet up for gaming events. The last proper meet up before NYCC was last summer at a lounge in 48th street. It was arranged by lawblob, and several frequent posters such as jon_bones went. There's was even a thread with pictures. If anyone's down to meet up before the 27th or so of this month, let me know and I'll make a thread or revive an old one.

You know how I feel about the general male geek community, so I have to agree with you there.

Yes, there are at least two forums full of (may or may not be an exaggeration) angry/bitter ex-GAFers. I sometimes think it would be in everyone's best interest if the forum was locked to lurkers.

Not just the "industry." The "hardcore" community in particular, which is what our forum focuses on. If there was significant discussion of social gaming on this forum, I'm pretty sure the problem would mostly fix itself. Even things that only border on "social" gaming, like World of Warcraft, receive an intensely hostile reaction from a large portion of our community.

If you look over the games that have won GotY on GAF in the last 7 years:

Mass Effect 2
Metal Gear Solid 4
Mario Galaxy 1
Uncharted 2
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Resident Evil 4
Metal Gear Solid 3

You'll see that the field is dominated exclusively by single player games, mostly by story driven ones, and majoratively by games featuring dudebro protagonists a la Mass Effect, Uncharted, and Metal Gear Solid.

We'd be fine if GAF liked different games, or was at least slightly less hostile to the existence of social gaming.

Thanks. Sometimes I think I come off too choppy and passionate but I'm glad someone enjoys it heh.

Until yesterday I hadn't been harassed for months.

GAF's general exclusiveness tends to make people pretty salty about their accounts taking forever to get approved. Add that to the amount of Juniors who get banned for stupid shit and then blame "incompetent mods" and baby, you've got a stew going.

Yeah I cant remember the name, nor do I care to, but it's mostly banned members taking crude potshots at those they have ebeef with.

Having peoples faces as avatars rules actually. Humanizes everyone. Less chances to become a dick.
Yeah. Not going back. REAL GAF FOR LIFE.

What kind of fucked up dream scenario is this? Knowing that an attractive woman will never pull this on me saddens me greatly.

i should dig up an old pic to show how hard i suffered from ugly duckling syndrome. dude was definitely not into me, and him thinking i was blatantly coming onto him left a visibly bad taste in his mouth. HIGH SCHOOL WAS AWESOME

The prettiest girls never get hit on because every guy automatically assumes that he has no chance in hell.

(this only applies in real life, therefore I don't know ;P )

Not so sure about that, but gaf isn't match.com, and I'm more than happy to wax poetic on topics a little meatier than looks. Not that you guys aren't fun to look at, but we seem to have a good thing going here in the RP thread. :)

True. I was also glad to see you in there =).

It was hard to sit still when I see them posting that stuff and see you in there tackling it by yourself. I've had the same conversation at work so many times, and it's frustrating as hell to hear that I should let crazy guys tell me how to dress, act and what to do for my own safety.

I wonder if catcalling has ever worked in the history of mankind.

I feel that a large portion if the problem is that men are so vastly in the majority; I don't feel that's a male-specific problem, either. The tyranny of the majority is a real phenomenon and needs specific regulations to keep in check. If women comprised half of GAF (not likely any time soon, I admit), some of the things many members say in a male dominated forum would go unsaid in an equally shared one.

Does gaf actually have any numbers on what the split is? I'd be curious to know just how big the female population is on here. It's already much larger than I expected.

FemShep is a dudebro? ;)

This thread is moving so fast... I would like to know. Out of the sexes on gaf, who uses 50 posts per page vs 100 posts per page more?
i'm a 50 guy, 3g internet can't handle all those pics at once!

I've seen some rather similar types of "hardcore" conversations even on forums dedicated to FB social games. Though it was a more equal split of men/women being hostile and arrogant to others. But there is a much reduced creep factor compared to the more hardcore communities.

My angry looking pic works wonders for avoiding any PMs!

I do love my single player story-driven games more than anything. Grew up on old school adventure games and love them so. Not to say I don't like playing multiplayer with friends, but I'm an adventurer at heart.

This is amazing, hilarious and sad.

Dat jealousy. I bet they're frothing at the mouth due to the fact that I'm sitting here, posting about how I get to be here and they can't.

Mmmmm, feelsgoodman

This thread moves way too fast. Ten more pages while I was out food shopping, and two more while I was trying to catch up!

I've never felt too intimidated to post anything, although I admit sometimes I avoid posting in threads where--I'll be kind and call it "misunderstandings about women"--get out of hand. But now that I think about it I feel like I've failed GirlGAF for not standing behind you in a real way during those times. I need to step up more.

Well, it hasn't been simply talking about things. When the Trans-GAF thread started, and a few members felt brave enough to post pics of themselves, one of the forums being mentioned had a field day basically (saying all kinds of things about the pics, demeaning the people in said pics, photoshops, etc.).

I'm sure they've done it with other communities on GAF (or people out there in general), that's just the one example I personally saw.

Thanks. Sometimes I think I come off too choppy and passionate.

I'll admit I was annoyed by you at times. Not because of what you were trying to do but because of the number of threads I seen it brought up in. Maybe i should be upset at the men making you feel this way but to be honest growing up and admiring two older sisters and being an over protective little brother(and now uncle) I only get set off to things in real life. My many years of forums far worse than gaf where racism and sexism was literally in every thread in ways that would make most people suicidal have desensitized me to the effect of words on a screen no matter what they may be.

Seeing you in this thread however has changed my view on both you and opiate in this regard. I tend to only notice things about people that annoy me sadly. That has changed in this thread as i have seen a more playful side of you. next time I see the debate come up I'll probably just remember that to you it's real and painful.

FemShep is a dudebro? ;)

They seem to be trying to change this with the third game, but I'd love to see any significant promotional material for ME 1/2 that features a Female Shepard. I'd also argue that dudebro is defined by more than just the gender of the main character; Mass Effect is about a bad ass space marine who shoots big guns and saves the universe. We may have different ideas of what "dudebro" means, but it doesn't get much more male-oriented than that.

And "male oriented" does not mean "and no girls play it at all and any girl who does is stupid." Just to be clear. American Football has an approximately 80/20 split in its gender demographics as of the late 2000s, and I think one can reasonably call that male dominated.
